B. COURSE SYNOPSIS:
This course aims at explaining, discussing and constructing an understanding of qualitative research
methodology in educational research. The content of the course will discuss 5 main approaches in qualitative
research: Ethnography approach, Case Study, Narrative approach, Grounded Theory and Phenomenology.
From this course, students will be able to understand the functions of education towards development and
policymaking. This course will also discuss various philosophical perspectives and research paradigms in
social research. The student will learn about research design, data collection and data analysis technique, and
how to write the qualitative research report. This course will be conducted in lecture, tutorial and mini
seminar and fieldwork study. Throughout this course, student will be able to conduct a small scale
qualitative study by applying any approach in qualitative research methodology.

C. LEARNING OUTCOME :
Student will be able to:

1. Understand the philosophical assumptions of qualitative research approach

2. Explain the concept and types of qualitative research approach
3. Analyze and compare different research paradigms in educational research.
4. Synthesis in the ideas, concept and methodology in qualitative research to produce a qualitative research
design.
5. Make an analysis and interpretation of qualitative evidences from the field work study.
