OPEN CALL FOR INSTALLATION ART
Fort Process is an expansive multidisciplinary music and arts festival that takes place in the evocative

Process is back for a third edition on September 22nd 2018, with an expanded season in smaller venues

nstallation works to interpret the theme of science, invention and discovery at this year’s

crossdisciplinary work will be considered and you are free to interpret the brief as you wish. We are
looking for works that will critically reflect upon the qualities of the fort (acoustical, topographical,

Sussex, BN9 9DS, United Kingdom
BUILD RESTRICTIONS
As the structure of the fort is a listed heritage building there are strict rules about what we are allowed to do
during the festival. It is possible to hang works from ceilings and walls but there are certain limitations.
Please make it clear in your application if your work involves the hanging or suspension of materials, or
potentially invasive construction.
Whilst it is not a requirement, but we would strongly prefer that you are able to install the work yourself. If
you are planning to apply and cannot attend the festival, make sure this is adequately addressed in your
application and that your technical requirements have been considered with a plan in place.
SITE LOCATIONS
There are some video walkthroughs of the spaces in the fort on this page:
http://fortprocess.co.uk/venuewalkthroughsforartists/ We would advise proposing something that could
potentially work in a number of spaces.
As part of the extended Fort Process season we are using numerous venues in the South East, and suitable
applications will be considered for these events outside the main festival. Dates and venues are to be
confirmed, but application criteria remain the same.
SITE CONDITIONS
Bear in mind that this event takes place in September in England, so any outdoor proposals must be able to
cope with the extremities of the British summertime weather! Many of the spaces in fort have significant
damp and humidity issues, so please consider this if your works are likely to be easily damaged.
SAFETY
You may be required to include a risk assessment and method statement if selected.
POWER
The interior spaces outlined below have power. Outdoor spaces by default do not have electricity but we can
discuss your needs via email. Again the damp and humidity in many spaces could be a problem for
installations that involve electrical equipment, so please flag up any potential issues in your application.

ABOUT NEWHAVEN FORT
Built in 1860, Newhaven Fort is an alluring site, rich in human and natural history. After being
decommissioned as a military facility the fort has undergone neglect and subsequent restoration, with many
of the features of its inner architecture remaining intact, including the rumoured ghost in the caponier. Built
into the geology of the South Downs, it gives it a unique perspective of Newhaven town, and the hills and
sea of the area. The outside areas centre around the parade ground, tracing steps up to the ramparts where
the perimeter is met with far reaching views of the English Channel to one side, Newhaven and the South
Downs to the other. The interior, however, becomes mysterious and disorientating, replete with a
remarkable acoustic character.
