SLO is multidiscipline research-oriented organization. It’s underlying objectives to undertake

policy, institutional and cultural analysis and action research advocacy as well as consultancy to
facilitate politically owned institutional revival through networked research outputs and social
communication through advocacy, workshops, seminars, conferences and media to create and
increase awareness of the need or result oriented accountability for good governance.

SLO has calibration with LG departments, Local administration, election commission of Pakistan
and all political parties of district Sargodha. Our organization has energetic staff and expertise of
their field including computer operators, data collector, Accountant, Administrator, Mobilizer,
management experts. In regular staff we have 10 participants of above relevant field. Beside this
we have so many volunteers who engage themselves in every activity whatever we required. We

donation that contribute to the health and vitality of the community.

VISION

To work towards creating a better community, it provides basic health, education and
empowerment to every citizen, a world in which every child attains the right to survival, protection
development and participation.

2. Rationale for Choosing this Organization

Sociology is all about social issues, social problems and social behaviour of humans and the main
mato of NGO’s is to solve the social problems, welfare of humans, fulfill their needs that they are
unable to meet. Despite this it is a requirement of my degree to do internship in any social instition
for 6 week that’s why I choose this institution. Besides the degree thing I also wanted to work in
a place where I can help the needy and serve the community on the other hand, I also wanted to
learn that how these social institutions work and what impact they have on the society in which
we are living. How theses social institutions and NGO’s are working to facilitate those people who
are unable to meet the basic necessities of life. Therefore, I choosed the Safe Life Organization,
that is a best place to learn and see the practical implications of Sociology in the field of public
welfare. The SLO is basically a childeren oriented NGO where those childern are treated that are
affected with Thalassaemia. So, this organization is model NGO that is working for sick children
through blood transfusion. This organization is working on charity basis and people have great
passion to serve the humanity. So, I choose to see how this works out and how the concept of
social welfare is being practiced in our society.

On more reason to choose this organization is that; as the city Sargodha is not so big and with a
very limited resources, there are only few organizations/NGOs that are working for the betterment
of society and I wanted to be a part of this rehabilitation community. That’s why I choosed SLO.

2.1 Relevance with Subject

Sociology is a science of society. As a social science, it attempts to steady social life as a whole,
to the understanding of social life as a whole sociology required the help of other social
sciences which studies a particular aspect of society.
• Medical sociology

Medical sociology is the sociological analysis of medical organizations and institutions; the
production of knowledge and selection of methods, the actions and interactions of healthcare
professionals, and the social or cultural (rather than clinical or bodily) effects of medical
practice. The field commonly interacts with the sociology of knowledge, science and
technology studies, and social epistemology. Medical sociologists are also interested in the
qualitative experiences of patients, often working at the boundaries of public health, social
work, demography and gerontology to explore phenomena at the intersection of the social and
clinical sciences. Health disparities commonly relate to typical categories such as class and
race. Objective sociological research findings quickly become a normative and political issue.

• Sociology and Research Method

Sociology is a science, and research in the field is dependent upon solid study design and
statistical inference (quantitative) or systematic review (qualitative). Sociology without
research wouldn't be sociology or any type of systematic study of sociology; it would likely be
history or philosophy (which are great subjects but don't give the type of answers a study in
sociology can).

• Sociology and Psychology

Sociology studies the social systems while psychology studies mental systems. The nature of
relationship between sociology and psychology still remains controversial and the study of
social psychology in relation to both is still unsettled.

• Sociology and Organizational Behavior

Organizational Behavior is "the study of human behavior in organizational settings, the

interface between human behavior and the organization, and the organization itself".

Organizational behavior is an applied behavioral science that is built upon contributions from
a number of behavioral disciplines. The main areas are psychology, sociology, social
psychology, anthropology, and political science.

Organizational behavior (OB) is a discipline that includes principles from psychology,

sociology, and anthropology. Its focus is on understanding how people behave in
organizational work environments. ... Organizational behavior (OB) is the study of how people
behave in organizational work environment.

• Political Science and Sociology

Political sociology is concerned with the sociological analysis of political phenomena ranging
from the State, to civil society, to the family, investigating topics such as citizenship, social
movements, and the sources of social power. The lineage of this discipline is typically traced
from such thinkers as Montesquieu, Smith and Ferguson through the "founding fathers" of
sociology – Marx, Durkheim and Max Weber – to such contemporary theorists as Gellner,
Giddens, Habermas and Mann.

Political Sociology is a subfield of Sociology, which study the structure and distribution of
power in a Society. Basically, it is the systematic and scientific study of power and the
relationship between states, societies and political conflict.

Sociology is the science of society, whereas political science is the science of state. Political
science is more specialized than sociology. Scope of sociology is very wide, whereas political
science has a narrow scope. Political science studies politically organized societies.

financially.

3.5 Visit to Dialysis Center

We visited the Dialysis center under the
supervision of our Supervisor where we studied
the patients, visited different wards. The main aim
was to learn the social help process and patient
rehabilitation.

3.6 Visit to Re-habitation Anti-Narcotic Center

I along with my fellow internee visited the Anti-Narcotic center of DHQ Hospital Sargodha.
That is an Anti-Narcotic department, working for the betterment of drug addicts to get them
rid of from this bad habit. This department provide free medicine & free counseling to addicts.
Job Description: Specific tasks assigned to me.

In my six-week internship period at Safe Life Organization I worked in different aspects, I visited
along with my fellow internees to many institutions, I spent time in wards with thalassemia
patients. In that 6-week period some specific tasks were assigned to me & those are as under:

3.7 To take Case history of patients

Taking case history is the first and most important step in diagnosing and in treatment of patient
in health sector. All the further treatment
and diagnosis depends on the initial case
history. I also learnt the science of history
taking. My most of the time spent in
history taking as it was the first step of
understanding the patient. I interrogated
each child in SLO and made complete
notes of it, I studied their files thoroughly
to understand the beginning of their
disease. In SLO in the beginning it was my primary task to make notes of the patients beside
this I also went through the old files of patients and literature about thalassemia from which I
found that 82% of the patients were due to cousin marriages, 7% of the Thalassemia patients
belong to blood relation and 6% of the patients belong to same cast. Safe Life Organization on
the other hand is doing their best to prevent the spread of thalassemia and to facilitate these
patients.

3.8 Care of patients.

Most of the patients at SLO were children and it was our duty to spent time with them to
entertain them and to feel them as they are
as healthy as other are. Students interview
the Head of this center about the dialysis
department to know the running process of
the organization. We collect the data of
patient and try to know why the commit
this disease.

3.9 Daily tasks:

Besides the above tasks there were many specific tasks that I did on daily basis those are as
under:

• File making
SLO is a very prominent NGO in Sargodha where a lot of patients visit on daily basis so
to manage them properly it is need of time to maintain their record properly. That’s why in
SLO there is a sperate record room where file of each and every patient is available. I also
worked in that branch and it was my daily task to maintain the files of patients visiting the
health facility.

• Vital of patients:
Blood transfusion is a very easy but risky procedure so it requires the attention of
paramedic staff to check the vitals of patients. I also took part in this activity and I checked
the vitals of the patients.

• Comparison of history
Thalassemia patients require the blood’s transfusion after specific time so it is very
important to compare their current stats with the previous transfusion. I practically record
their history and compared that with the previous data.

• Blood test and barnula passing

Our supervisor also taught us that how to test the blood to find its groups. So, after a week
I learned that process and perform the test individually and then it became my daily task to
perform a specific no of blood test besides this I also learnt that how to pass the barnula.

3.10 Weekly task (Friday camp)

In SLO, on every Friday a blood transfusion camp is organized to transfused the blood. So,
Friday remained a very hectic day in SLO for the entire period of my internship. I along with
my internee collogues check the vitals, make history of patients, pass the barnula, transfuse
their blood and also test the blood on every Friday.

4. Key learning
The basic purpose of internship is to prepare a student for his/her practical life. To make him/her
prepare to face the brutal realities of society and to able him/her to overcome the hurdles in his/her
professional life.

4.1 Skills learnt during the internship period

I during my internship period learnt many things from my colleagues, from my supervisor and
from the environment in which I worked. Some of the key learning are as under:

4.1.1 Skills I learnt.

In my internship period I learnt many important things/skills which I never imagined in my
life to be learnt. I learnt that how to bleed a patient and how to check the blood group of
patients. I learnt the process of barnula passing. I learnt the skill of management.
4.1.2 Team work
Team work is something that always help in life and this thing I learnt in SLO. At SLO I
worked with two other interns as well as the staff of Safe life Organization. Interns were
encouraged to work together to facilitate the patients and to run the work smoothly.
Teamwork is such an important aspect of running successful organization and my
internships have taught me how to do this on a NGO level.

4.1.3 Work under pressure

In a professional life we have to face pressure on many occasions, that pressure can lead
you to the failure if not overcome. In my internship period I leant that how to manage the
pressure and give maximum output. In SLO, on every Friday management organize a blood
donation camp where a large no of donor and patients come. We, the internee has to mange
them all along with the staff, that camp taught me that how to overcome work pressure and
now it has become a strength of me.

4.1.4 Confidence
The skills I learnt from my internship gave me confidence to believe myself and believing
in yourself is vital to your success and my internship helped me in gain the experience that
helps me feel competent and confident in what I can do.

4.1.5 Professional communications

Working in a professional setting for the first time can be difficult to get used to. But it is
the best way to learn how to navigate the working world through real-life, hands-on
experience. One of the most valuable skill that I gained from my internship is the ability to
speak with people in a professional setting. Discussions with bosses or coworkers was
different from discussions with lecturers or fellow students. After my internship, I have a
better idea of the appropriate way to behave as a professional. This will help me a lot when
i start interviewing for jobs because i will be more confident and will sound more mature
and experienced in a professional setting.

4.1.6 Taking constructive criticism well

Naturally, no one likes to be criticized and performance evaluations can be quite scary. You
will probably make a few mistakes and receive constructive criticism about your work from
both your colleagues and your boss. Always remind yourself that it’s not personal. It is for
your own good and growth and it will improve the quality of your work.

4.1.7 Punctuality in all aspects

Education teaches us a lot but there are some aspects that we can only learn from the
professional life like, punctuality. Punctuality is one of those skills that I learnt during my
internship period. I learnt the importance of time there, where I had to come on time and
left the job on time.
4.2 Relationship of my learning with the course I studied
My basic course is sociology and sociology is all about society. It includes the culture, religion,
social problems and it revolves around the people.
NGO (Non-Governmental Organizations) are created for the wellbeing of community &
for the people: to improve the society, social values and to focus on those affairs that are behind
the eye of governments are left un-attended due to insufficiency of funds.
Sociology and NGO are interrelated as the NGOs are a product of sociology, that’s why I
choose SLO among different organizations in Sargodha. I learnt a lot while my internship
period that is directly related to my degree. While my internship I along with my fellow
internees took part in patient counseling, to make them aware about their disease and to
eliminate the hopelessness factor in patient’s mind.
One other thing that I learnt is: professional communication, that is very effective and
necessary not only in the field of sociology but it also help in day to day life of anyone. This
learning, put confidence in me that I believe will help me in my future life. Sociology is also
about dealing with the society and that cannot be effective without the communication skill.
So, there is a strong bond in my learning & the course I studied. Beside the communication
skill, punctuality is also necessary for the progress in every field of life.

5. Conclusion
Coursework is very necessary to boost up the mind and to build the basics of every
curriculum. But every curriculum needs some practical environment where it can be applied to
find the true spirit of that knowledge. That why internship is very necessary and I also did my
internship in SLO. Where I learnt many things/skills that are related to my coursework and those
skills helped a lot to flourish and boost my personality.
