DESIGN PRESENTATION

A dual family residence in Kathmandu which
seamlessly blends
Nepali tradition with a modern, international
sensibility.
Nepali Traditional Architecture Nepali Modern Architecture

Traditional Nepali architecture includes


• Wooden elements and red fired bricks with metal ornamentation.
• Pagoda style pitched roofs with deep eaves are archetypal features.
• Horizontal lines are expressed through carved wooden cornices and lintels.

LEGACY
• The architectural design transforms traditional Nepali
architecture by synthesizing it with modern features.
• Brick panels, wooden framed windows, overhanging eaves, and
wooden brackets form a modern expression of the traditional.

ARCHITECTURE
• Traditional Newari
residences have dark
timber beams and walls
in white plaster or red
brick
• Deep set bay windows
with wooden
surrounds.

• Modern houses take


the quintessential
features of the Newari
interior and simplify
them.
• They bring lightness
through materials
tall ceilings, and
larger windows.

• Modern interiors with classically inflected
details.
• Delicate outlined paneling, crown molding
details in the ceiling, and transitional
furniture pieces refer Art-Deco interiors.
• Modern paintings and straight-lined
elements add contemporary flair.

• Special finishes like lacquered surfaces,
veneers, tufted details in the upholstered
furniture and headboards, molding details
on shelving, and soft furnishings like carpets
and curtains add texture and depth.

• The layout is organized along principal and secondary axes.

FIRST FLOOR PLAN
• Enfilade is a way of centering openings along an axis
• It creates continuity of connection between the rooms.
• It allows a progressive unfolding of space and brings
classical rigour to modern spaces.

SPATIAL CONCEPT
• Stone selected for the flooring sets up a base colour for the interiors
palette
• inlay directs the eye and provides relief from the monotone stone
• inlay design works as a modern gesture amidst classically laid out

FLOORING DESIGN
• Wooden flooring in a herringbone is a classical pattern that works very
well in transitional spaces
• Burberry beige is a warm beige that is an elegant backdrop to the wall
finishes and soft furnishings.
• White Thassos is a high quality Greek non-figured white marble used as
inlay on beige.

INLAY & FLOORING REFERENCES


• Marble stairs with brass railings and a black handrail is a classic combination that easily
becomes a modern statement.
• Staircase as an well detailed architectural feature is one of the highlights of the residence.

STAIRCASE REFERENCES
• As a open area in front of the stair landing, the lobby is stylish and fluid. .
• It allows for casual seating with a wide Kagan-inspired curved sofa and a round table that plays
against the rectilinear geometries of the lobby.
• Protruding columns are absorbed in portal. Niches behind the sofa for decorative objets.
• The lobby functions as an expansive anteroom for party spillover and for casual visitors.

FINISHES
• The living room layout is formal and ordered for balance and symmetry along classical principles.
• It provides seating for 16 people and enough space to move around easily.
• A system of glass and pocket doors provide both privacy and circulation. .
• The orientation of the sofas takes advantage of the views and for easy access to the balcony.

Newari interior details
• A contemporary twist by mixing both Newari and Western
references such as Frank Lloyd Wright’s melding of
Mesoamerican influences in his California houses.

interiors while creating an updated International look.

• Like the Living room, the Dining room layout is formal and ordered for balance and symmetry along
classical principles.
• It provides seating for 10 people and enough space to move around easily.
• A set of pocket doors allow the space to be closed while the table is laid. .
• One end of the room has a bar and bar back cabinet which is a beautiful backdrop to the dining table.

• It is a cosy self-contained room with abundant light that takes advantage of the windows in the
placement of the seating and desk.
