The piece I liked the best was my Romeo and Juliet Mise en Scene Analysis paper.

I
think that it was really fun to do because I got to describe the intricate details in the scene. It
was interesting to see everything that goes into making the viewer feel the mood of the scene.
With a movie that has such a bold aesthetic, it was fun to see how Baz Luhrman kept the mood
going in so many aspects of the scenes. This paper was less technical and let me focus on
visual aspects of a scene that people may not notice at first glance.
The most difficult piece to write in my opinion was the Name Essay. It wasn’t a formal
paper or something with a lot of difficult formatting, but I still found it hard to write. In my opinion,
this was the hardest piece to write because it’s hard to write about myself. I had to think hard
about how I really felt about my name. Since I hear it every day, it loses meaning and just
becomes normal to me. It was still fun to think about, though.
The first piece I wrote in my writing style was my Name Essay. I think that since writing
this my writing has gotten better in a few ways. To start, the way I wrote was really choppy and
it sounded like I was just spitting thoughts out onto the paper. Writing like that sounds worse to
me than flowing ideas that link well together. When the ideas are choppy and aren’t connected
well, the writing seems like it’s going too fast and there isn’t a very cohesive theme throughout. I
also improved my grammar over the course of this year. I had some issues with punctuation and
comma usage that I’ve gotten better with this year.
I think that out of all of the pieces that I chose to include, my Mise en Scene analysis
paper best illustrates my strengths as a writer. In this essay I got to show my descriptive skills. I
really liked being able to describe different aspects of the scene that had an influence on the
movie’s style.
This year, the revision tool that worked best for me was peer revision. I think that this
tool worked well because when you are trying to correct your own work, you can only see some
of the flaws that are really there. It helps to have someone unbiased judge your work and look
for error that you missed.
I enjoyed reading the short story The Most Dangerous Game. I liked it because it had an
interesting, psychological-type plot and it was set in an environment where the law didn’t apply
and the rules of normal society weren’t upheld. I was interesting to see how the main character
could outwit the hunter even though the odds were stacked against them. I also really liked my
own free-choice novel called The Book of Lost Things by John Connolly. That novel was
interesting because it started in a past time period in England, but as the story continues, the
setting warps and becomes more and more detached from reality until the main character
returns to their world. This book was violent and intense at times and it was interesting to read
because of the unique juxtaposition of those elements with childrens’ stories and different fairy
tales. The end message was deeper and more profound than I expected from the beginning of
the story and it was overall a very fun and entertaining read.
The most important lesson that I learned this year was that nothing worth having can be
obtained easily. This year, I’ve had to work hard to get good grades and meet new people. It
was hard at times, but in the end, I’m really glad that I put in the effort because now I’m in a
really good place and I’m happy with my grades. It was hard to leave most of my friends from
last year, but I adjusted and ended up being really happy in the LSA.
I would describe my 9th grade LSA experience as new and fun. I learned a lot of new
things this year and had new experiences. I think that broadening my horizons was a good
experience and I’ve learned so much this year that I know will help me through high school and
life.
