These are the selected spreads from my Tokyo travelogue, a graphic designer's way
to record a trip.

Tokyo was my first post-college travel destination and I was severely fascinated by
the city. Upon returning from that awesome 2,188 km² playground, I decided not
to let the memories slip away so easily by preserving them in 12 chapters, each
talks about different sides of Tokyo. From the Tokyoites’ mysterious yet charming
to tokyo politeness, displays of world-class architecture across the city, to its out-of-this-world
and back kawaii culture.

I have some serious amount of fun illustrating songs, it combines my passion for
turning words into images and well, good music. 20Something is a Jamie Cullum
original. The song talks about what goes on in the mind of most people in their
twenties: how they enter the real world and how it turns to be different than
expected. I first heard this song in my early twenties and thought, “Hey. I really
can relate to this one...” and started decoding the lyrics line by line, thinking how
to present the song visually. After a few stages of style experiment, I chose to tell
twenty the story with by introducing a mascot & playing with symbols and metaphors (in
something a very contemplative colour scheme).

The National Library Board is the administrator of MusicSG, a non-profit digital
archive project with the aim to digitise, archive and provide access to all forms of
published musical works from, in and about Singapore to preserve the country’s
artistic heritage and legacy. The key to making this engaging to the general public
was to make it easy for people to understand the history and evolution of the
music scene in Singapore. Our team was brought on board to develop infographics
that would suit this very purpose. Our duty is to delve deep into the subject-matter,
NLB’s to create stories and narratives that fascinate and inspire, and then portray them in
musicSG appealing, easy-to-read infographics.

Music of
Singapore
Singapore has a diverse music culture that ranges from rock and pop to folk
and classical. The different people (Chinese, Malays, Indians, and other
peoples of different ethnicity as well as Eurasians) with their traditional forms of
music, the various modern musical styles, and the fusion of different forms
account for the musical diversity in the country.

Human beings can experience complex emotions and the existing tools of
expression are not capable to exhibit them. I made this my FYP. For a year I
played with different methods and media in attempt to express multiple, mixed,
even contradicting emotions. One of them was this typography experiment,
combining words and symbols as signifiers to express emotional contradiction. I
used the objects that are universally deemed unpleasant / unloving to form the
words “love” and vice versa, in a way showing what we express / say is not always
love/hate what we really feel.

I was assigned to rebrand my church's young adults community as it did not have a
proper logo or branding guidelines. So early last year, I led a newly-formed
marketing team to give the community's new face. We brainstormed and came up
with a new logo and a proper branding guidelines. We then ran a 4-weeks long
campaign to introduce the new ‘us’ (besides visual identity, we also redefined the
community's role and mission, the new branding was built based on them). The
new branding is proven to strengthen the members' sense of belonging and unity,
YABS we also saw an increase in weekly attendance after rebranding.

Following the community’s major rebranding, all collaterals and publications are
now properly designed and presented. Every week my duty is to create digital &
printed flyers to promote the upcoming week’s theme / programme. The flyers
always feature shades of blue or grey (obvious or not) to align with the new
branding. The blue / grey flyers has become our hallmark and the audience are
already familiar with it, but for special occasions (e.g. Indonesian independence
celebration), we’ll surprise them with something different.

It was a casual lunchtalk turned an exciting mission. A teammate and I were
discussing on how can we brush up our drawing skills, and here’s how: everyday
for a month, we have to produce a sketch (with different themes / keywords
everyday). We found an interesting list online (that includes “draw yourself as
99-year old” and “draw yourself as a superhero”) and started one of the most
delightful month of the year.

The brief was to create a logo for Legend Palace, an upcoming hospitality and
entertainment complex in Macau. Using intricate fine lines inspired by the hotel’s
grand façade, a logo that is elegant, classy, and majestic was crafted. The gold &
brown colour combo was thoughtfully chosen to reflect class, dedicated service and
experience, while the classy serif typeface is selected to showcase grandiosity and
elegance.“Landmark of Splendor” is the tagline I propose to complement the
visual identiy.

During my 3-year stint in 8titude Design Lab, I was responsible for designing the
company’s marketing eDMs. The rule is consistent: under a yearly theme, form
number 8 with suitable ornaments from each festive occassion to entertain
audience. For example, in 2013, the theme was ‘HANG ON, *holiday* is
coming’. So the eDMs throughout the year featured iconic animals in distress,
waiting for the rescue (upcoming holiday), at some point making use of Miley
Cyrus’ Wrecking Ball controversial fame. The 5th year anniversary eDM was an
8 for 8titude exception. We opted for photography approach to promote the birth of Octagra-
phy (8titude’s sister company focusing on photography services).

The Agency for Integrated Care (AIC) is Singapore’s answer to the challenges of
aging and we were appointed to conceptualized & design their 2013 annual report.
We proposed an illustration style that immediately immerses the reader in AIC’s
mission. The colours, graphics and photographs were warm and welcoming, and
we used iconic imagery and symbolism that would have greater impact.
Illustrations and stylish hand-drawn icons throughout the yearbook presented
AIC’s facilitation efforts visually, to help stakeholders understand the suite of
AIC 2013 services from nursing care and home-intervention programmes to caregiving
annual report training and senior care support.

I was brought onboard by WWF-Singapore mainly to help them conceptualise
and launch their first ever kids magazine, and to ensure smooth production of
the subsequent issues. Being the only designer in the organization— with many
other projects to take care of, I need to make sure that each edition is
well-designed & delivered on time, and has interesting & educational contents
that appeal to the target audience. Even though it is a great challenge,
I always enjoy working on Panda Junior as it combines my passion for children’s
panda illustration and environmental education.

After a year of working for WWF-Singapore, my job scope has expanded from
taking care of educational materials & Panda Junior, to taking care of everything
else. From conceptualisation, design & art direction of merchandise/fundraising
materials, annual reports, branding kit & collaterals for new events/initiatives, to
“interior design” for the Singapore office. Here are some of projects I worked on
with the organisation, each one is thoughtfully crafted for a great cause.

I am so grateful to be given a chance to design my own wedding collaterals:
from the invitations, Holy Matrimony booklets, pre-wedding pictures &
photobooth props, table numbers, menu, to the wedding favors. I wanted the
occasion to be very personal and memorable, and many guests commented that
the wedding really captured my personality.

Introducing boeram apik, my very own stationery brand, something that I work
on when I’m not busy trying to save the earth.

I call my products Printed Pleasures: a series of affordable paper products that put
a smile on your face. I want everyone to feel the excitement of receiving a card
on every moment worth being happy for (just like the olden days) And also the
joy of simply having something pretty to have or to hold. Most of the products
printed are crafted by hand and with love, making each item personal and
one-of-a-kind.

Ripples is a volunteer movement initiated by HSBC and WWF-Singapore to
raise awareness about the importance of water & how to conserve it.

While studying the form/motion of water ripples, I came up with the idea of
stirring up change. It effectively captures the spirit of Ripples: people from different
backgrounds coming together to shake things up (in water conservation),
impacting many people and inspiring them to do the same, thus creating a
stirring up bigger ripple effect that leads to breakthrough. The concept is then adopted to
be the tagline of the movement.
