Introduction
Industrial Communication

Communications networks are one component

of central significance in the automation system.
SIMATIC NET offers a complete range of bus systems
for industrial application of field or process communi-
cation as well as data communication.
Industrial Mobile Communication
Industrial Mobile Communication is the name for
the industrial mobile communications products
(e.g. MOBIC) of SIMATIC NET which utilize wireless
communication. These are based on worldwide
networks, e.g. WLAN (according to IEEE 802.11b)
or GSM, or UMTS in the future. The increasing variety
of information technology means that IMC is being
increasingly applied in automation technology.
Industrial Ethernet (IEEE 802.3 and 802.3u) –
the international standard for area networking is cur-
rently the number one in the LAN landscape worldwide,
with a share of more than 80%.
Industrial Ethernet can be used to design powerful
communications networks over a wide area.
PROFInet is based on the Industrial Ethernet.
PROFIBUS (IEC 61 158/EN 50 170) –
the international standard for the field is the market
leader for fieldbuses worldwide, and offers powerful
process or field communication.
As a low-cost alternative to a cable harness, the
AS-Interface connects sensors and actuators using
a two-wire cable.
The basis for building automation is the worldwide
standard EIB (EN 50 090, ANSI EIA 776).

Data communication

Data communication is used

to exchange data between
programmable controllers or
between a programmable
controller and intelligent
partners (PC, computer etc.).

Process or field
communication
Process or field communica-
tion serves to link actuators/
sensors to a PLC.
The link can be made using
integral interfaces on the CPU
or via interface modules (IMs,
CPs).
SIMATIC and SIMOTION offer
the PROFIBUS DP and the AS-

communication, as well as the
EIB as the link between pro-
duction automation and build-

With the powerful automation
systems currently existing, it
is frequently more practical to

All about Industrial Ethernet

Industrial Ethernet offers a powerful cell network

according to standard IEEE 802.3 (Ethernet).
Ethernet technology, which has been successful for
many years, can be used in conjunction with switching,
full duplex and autosensing allowing the customer to
select the performance required for the network. Data
transmission rates can also be chosen to suit require-
ments, as consistent compatibility facilitates the step-
by-step integration of new technology.
In addition, Ethernet is the technology on which the
Internet is based and offers a whole range of flexible
options for worldwide networking.

All about PROFIBUS

The expanded AS-Interface specification V2.1 supports
connection of up to 62 slaves. Thanks to the integrated
analog value processing, access to analog values in
the masters is as simple as access to digital values.
The SIMATIC S7-400® is connected to the AS-Interface

Links are available with degree of protection IP20 and

All about EIB

More rigorous demands on flexibility and ease-of-use

of electrical installation in conjunction with a desire to
mini-mize energy consumption have led to the
development of building installation systems. The bus
technology used in these systems is based on a common
European concept, the European Installation Bus (EIB).

to be operated in the same EIB installation.
EIB can also be connected to

System advantages system (e.g. ISDN).

In conventional electrical installations, each function

requires a separate wire and each control system
requires a separate network.
EIB, on the other hand, allows all operational functions
and procedures to be controlled, monitored and
reported over a common cable. This means that the
energy supply can be directly routed to the electrical
consumers without any detours.
As well as cutting the cost of wiring, further advantages
can be derived: the electrical installation in a building
is considerably easier and can be subsequently
expanded or modified without any problems. In the
event of application changes or alterations to the room
partitioning, the EIB system is quick and easy to modify
through simple reassignment of the parameters of the
bus stations without the need to install any new cables.
