To predict mixing time a steady state solution of the flow field is calculated. After that we switch
to transient solver and monitor the mass fraction of two tracer species poured at top (tracera)
and bottom (tracerb) of the tank. The monitor points vary in axial position in the tank.
Basic Setup of steadystate simulation of flow field.
Tank Volume = 164 l
Impeller Diameter = 0.3 m
Material: Water (rho = 998.2 kg/m3; eta = 0.001003 kg/ms)
Impeller Speed: 100 rpm
Re number: approx. 150k larger than 10k means turbulent flow
● Read steadystate solution in a 3ddp FLUENT session and DO NOT initialize the
solution.
● Switch to transient solver
● Activate Species Transport at Models > Species > Species Transport
● Define a Mixture containing 2 tracer species having the same properties like water.
Check the material properties of the mixture. Density should be set to volumeweighted mixing
law. Viscosity should be set to massweighted mixing law. Diffusivity should be set to values
2
related to water e.g. 2e9 m/s.
● Define point surfaces to monitor mass fraction of tracers at Surface > Point
point1 = {0;0.1;0.2}
point2 = {0;0.3;0.2}
● Define monitors for tracer mass fraction at points at Solution > Monitors > Surface. You
can use copy (RMB at a defined monitor) to setup the monitors faster.
All points for one tracer are shown in the same window (tracera = Window3; tracerb =
Window4).
● Switch off flow equations at Solution > Controls > Equations
● Define initial conditions for tracers.
Tracera is filled over the complete top level. Tracerb is filled at a probe near the bottom (Probe
Position (0,0.05,0.15); Probe Diameter 0.1)). To initialize the massfraction of the tracers we
have to mark some cells using Adapt > Region.
Tracera
Tracerb:
The marked elements get initial condition for related tracers using patch (Solution > Solution
Initialization > Patch).
● Start transient simulation. Run 100 time steps using 0.1 stime step size. Finally we get
these plots to estimate the mixing times for different filling positions.
