communication [1-3]. Recently, the MIMO antenna has been dimensions of the proposed two-element MIMO antenna with
becoming a hot topic for portable terminal applications [1-10].
Since the size of these portable terminals are small, and then
the space of the terminals are limited. If several antennas are
integrated into the portable terminals to form a MIMO antenna
array, the closed installed antennas will increase the mutual
coupling between the antenna elements. The mutual coupling
may deteriorate the quality of the communication and might
reduce the channel capacity [1-11].
Many mutual coupling reduction methods have been
presented to improve the isolation between the antenna
elements, such as neutralization line technology [4],
electromagnetic bandgap [5-8], mush-room like decoupling
structures [9] and meta-material decoupling [9-11]. By using
these decoupling structures, the isolation can be improved in
comparison with the MIMO antenna without these decoupling
structures. However, some of the decoupling structures are Fig. 1 Geometry of the proposed two-element MIMO antenna array
large in size and others are complex in design. In recent years,
the meta-material structures have attracted much more
attention and have been widely studied for various applications.
As a potential application, the meta-material structures have
been applied for antenna array decoupling.
In this paper, a two-element MIMO antenna with high
isolation is proposed. The high isolation is implemented by
using five dual layer meta-material cells which are embedded
into the FR-4 substrate and are installed in the middle of the
two antenna elements. The proposed MIMO antenna array is
investigated by the HFSS and the experimental results show
