NOIDA
FIRST SESSIONAL TEST
EVEN SEMESTER (2018-19)
B.Tech. VI Sem.
Branch: EN Section: A, B & C
Subject Name: Special Electrical Machines Paper Code: REE064
Time: 1:15 hrs. Max. Marks:30

Note: Attempt all questions.

SECTION-A
Note: All Questions carry equal marks. 4*2=08 Marks
1. (a) Compare the deep bar and double cage rotor.
(b) Draw the torque-slip characteristics of double cage induction motor.
2. (a) What are the different ways of controlling slip?
(b) What are the merits and demerits of induction generator?

SECTION-B
Note: All Questions carry equal marks. 4*3=12 Marks
3. (a) Explain the construction and working of deep bar rotor with neat sketch.
(b) Discuss the concept of constant torque control of induction motor with the
help of suitable example.
4. (a) Explain the operating principle and working of doubly fed induction generator.
Also discuss its applications.
(b) A 3 phase, 50 Hz, 12 pole 200 kW slip ring induction motor drives a pump
whose torque is proportional to the square of speed. At full load the motor slip is
0.045. the rotor resistance measured between any two slip ring is 0.61 mΩ. What
resistance should be added in the rotor circuit to reduce the speed of pump to 450
rpm?

SECTION-C
Note: All Questions carry equal marks. 2*5=10 Marks
5. (a) The standstill impedances of inner cage and outer cage of a double cage rotor
are (0.02 + 𝑗0.9)Ω and (0.1 + 𝑗0.05)Ω respectively. The stator impedance may be
neglected. Calculate the torque produced by the two cages at:
(i) at starting
(ii) running at a slip of 4%
(b) Discuss the static kramer drive for constant power operation and its working
with the help of neat circuit diagram.
