Design loading and Calculation

Design Criteria:

Codes of practices:

a) Design
i) BS 8110 Structural Use of Concrete
ii) BS 5950 Structural Use of Steelwork in Building

b) load
i) cp3: Chapter V: part 2: 1972 - wind load
ii) Uniform Building By- Laws 1984 - imposed Load

Design Loading

Load factor and combinations of the following loads are complying to the table
2 for BS 5950 part 5: 1998 section 2.

a) Maximum Permissible Wind Load

Wind load on each roof will be computed from a basic 3 second gust
wind speed of 34 m/s.

b) Maximum Permissible Vertical Superimposed Dead Load

Dead Load kN/m2

i- Truss selfweight 0.080

ii- Metal Decks 0.050

iii- Batten 0.008

iv- Ceiling & services 0.250

c) Maimum Permissible Vertical Superimposed Live Load

(Live Load) (kN/m2)

i- Without Access for cleaning and maintenance only 0.250 kN

Note: 1) Roof truss should not be used for supporting water tank load

2) Roof truss is designed 0.25 kN/m2 for service load. Any relevant
loading which is exceeded the above design load is not in
consideration.

3) The roof truss not use for supporting any high magnitude of
vibration such as air condition ducting and air condition fan.

Ref. Calculation output

Design Calculation.

Dead load from roof = ( 0.05 + 0.008 + 0.25 + 0.08 )kN/m2

x 6.4 m

= 2.483 kN/m x 1.6

= 3.973 kN/m

live load = 0.25 x 6.4 x 1.4

= 2.24

Ultimate roofing load = 6.21 x 19.5

= 121.1 kN

Vertical load, N each column = 60.55 kN

Purlin Design

a) Loading
Perlin at 1.35m centres: span 6.4 m simply supported rafter slope of 20°

Assume purlin to be 152 x 76 channel section : Grade 43 A steel.

cladding : 1.35 x 6.4 x 0.15 = 1.296 kN

selfweight: 6.4 x 0.13 = 0.832 kN

Total dead load = 2.128 kN

Imposed Load, w1 = 1.35 cos 20° x 6.4 x 0.25

= 2.03 kN

Wind load, ww = 1.35 x 6.4 x ( -0.4 )

= -3.456 kN

Ultimate design load = ( 1.4 x 2.128 ) + ( 1.6 x 2.03 )

= 6.23 kN

b) Bending moment & shear force:

Max. ultimate moment Mx = 6.23 kN x 6.4 / 8

= 4.98 kNm

Max. ultimate shear force Fx = 6.23 / 2

= 3.115

c) Shear Capacity

Design strength for purlin = 275 N/mm2

Shear area Avx = 152.4 x 6.4 = 975 mm2

Shear capacity, ρvx = 0.6 py Avx

= 0.6 x 275 x 975 x 10-3

= 161 kN

Shear Aera, Avy = 0.9Ao

= 0.9 x 2 x 76.2 x 9 = 1234 mm2

Sheet No.

Shear Capacity Pvy = 0.6 x 275 x 1234 x 10-3

= 204 kN

Shear capacity > shear force adequate

Mcx = Pysx

= 275 x 130 x 10-3 = 35.8 kNm < 1.2 Pyzx

1.2 Pyzx = 1.2 x 275 x 112 x 10-3

= 37 kNm

Moment capacity Mcy = PySy

= 0.275 x 41.3 = 11.4 kNm

The ratio Sy/Zy is greater than 1.2 and hence constant 1.2 is the ratio
factored load/unfactored load

= 6.4 / [0.99 + 2.88] = 1.55

So, Mcy shall not exceed 1.55 PyZy

= 1.55 x 275 x 21 = 9 kNm

Local capacity check

Mx/Mcx + My/Mcy ≥ 1 (for channel section)

4.98 + 4.5 = 0.64

Local capacity of section is aduequate

e) Wind Section

Loads Wdx = 2.88 cos 20° = 2.71 kN

Ultimate load Wx = ( 1.00 x 2.71 ) + ( 1.4 x -3.456 )

= -2.13 kN

Wy = 1 x 0.99 = 0.99 kN

So, Mx = -2.13 x 6.4 / 8

= -1.7 kNm
