Chapter 1

1 Introduction
Tribon M3 Diagram utilises Microsoft Visio (Visio) as an interface to the user. The application is developed as an Add-on
to Visio (TbGenDiag.vsl), together with an interface to Tribon kernel (TbDiagInterface.dll).
The application uses the state of the art Graphical User Interface (GUI) of Visio to provide a user-friendly interface to the
Tribon Product Information Model. Visio supplies the users with the possibility to access the Tribon Product Information
Model in a very fast and convenient way.
The Visio Add-on technology is an extension to Visio, supplied in a Visio Library file (vsl). An Add-on can be regarded as
the interface between Visio and the Tribon kernel. Technically the Visio library is like a dll, but specialised to suit Visio.
An Add-on can perform actions on the current Visio document (Diagram, Stencil or Template) and the Tribon Product
Model via the kernel interface. Add-ons are normally accessible to the user as menu commands which performs an
action, like Tribon / File / Open, which will open a Visio document from the Tribon data bank assigned in the project.
Add-ons can also be accessed via Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) in user designed scripts. Not all Add-ons are
suitable for this, though, as they require user interaction which might not be desired in a script.
The Pipe Designer course is an integral part of the Tribon system. This training course has been created for those
people involved in the specification and early design of pipelines in vessels. It teaches how to use Tribon Pipe most
efficiently during this phase of the design. The course also shows how the information created may be re-used and
further refined in later design phases thus leading to higher efficiency and a reduction in the number of design man-
hours.

1.1 Aim
Over three days the participants will learn to use the Pipe Specification, Visio Diagrams, and Surface Treatment
programs and be familiar with the various links between them.

1.6 Visio reference books
It is advisable that each user has a basic knowledge of visio we recommend two books the first book Visio 2000 / 2003
for Dummies is a good book to understand the features in visio and give a good working knowledge. The second Book
Microsoft Visio 2002 Developer’s Survival Pack, is a Book that is focused on the developers i.e. people that want to link
visual basic to visio and tribon applications.

2 Pipe Components
As components are central to all Tribon M3 outfitting applications we will first of
all look at some typical pipe components.

The components that you create during this session may be re-used in the
examples that follow both in this course and the Pipe Modelling course.

2.1 Component Classes

The main class piping components is divided into the following component classes:

01 Couplings
02 Flanges
03 Valves
04 Connection pieces
07 Pipes
08 Miscellaneous piping components
99 General piping components

To a large extent the user does not have to know the component type code as this is determined by the position within
the component tree.
 To learn more about the input rules and conventions regarding Pipe Components, see Tribon M3 Outfitting,
Components, in the Tribon M3 User Guide, for full details of the input rules and conventions regarding Pipe
Components

2.2 Flange Component (create)

For flanges:
4 = the flange may not be placed between two other flanges.
5 = the flange may be placed between two other flanges.

2.2.3 Pipe Connections

 The sketch separating box is used to separate

each line into individual spools, in this case each
time a flange is inserted into the pipe line a new
spool would be created. There is the possibility
to remove the sketch separating in the pipe
modelling if necessary.

12
2.2.4 Symbol representation

Font number Symbol font number

Symbol number Symbol number within the font

Scale factor Symbol scale factor

Usage code Symbol usage code:

1 = pipe diagram
4 = pipe modelling
5 = isogen symbol
21 = electric circuit diagram
22 = cable diagram

Detail level Detail level of the symbol

 Note that when Save is chosen, the symbol information is then created. It is automatically read from the inputs that
you made earlier for DY, Outer Diameter etc. This symbol information is used to produce the 3D geometry that will
represent the component in modelling

13
2.3 3-way valve component (copy)

14
15

 Note that each of the three connections may have different connection details

 The component can be linked to

a Stencil name and Shape name
i.e. if the component name is
entered for a symbol on the
diagram then the shape will
automatically change to the one
entered against the component.

 Note, that in this case, the
component is linked to a volume
‘PV3WPN16-80’. The system can
use this volume as the 3D
representation or the symbol that is
produced when saving the
component. This is dependant on
the ‘model draw code’.

 Refer to the Tribon M3 Outfit

Drafting training guide for full
details

For an Equipment the:

Volume type is always = 2

Usage code is =11
Scale factor should be = 1
Detail level is user defined =0 - 9

Volume usage code:

2 = Pipe Modelling
4 = Pipe default volume
6 = Insulation default volume
11 = General equipment placing
22 = cable diagram
30 = Structure miscellaneous component volume 1
31 = Structure miscellaneous component volume 2
90 = Structure general cross section

Chapter 3

3 Pipe Specifications
A specification means a set of rules for selecting components provided the pipe diameter is known. A specification could
be valid for a whole product, a pipe system or a pipe line.

The rules of the specification restrict the use of components to a selected part of the total component data base.
Normally, it is possible to override the specification rules by stating the component code explicitly but this can also be
prohibited, if wanted.

Normally, the rules of the specification should be such that, for instance, only one flange of a certain type is possible to
use when the pipe diameter is given. Used in this way, the specification not only controls the selected subset of
components, but it will also simplify the user's input.

3.1 To start the pipe specifications program

The Diagram objects (Diagrams, Stencils and Templates) are stored as true Tribon objects. The actual Microsoft Visio
file is a binary attachment inside the object. Tribon Data Management (TDM) attributes are available on the objects and
Data Extraction can be used to examine which defined objects reside on a Diagram (Cables, Equipments and Pipelines).
No data belonging to a defined object is stored in the Diagram itself. The data is stored directly with the object in the
appropriate data bank

4.2 Data Banks used

Logical data Bank Objects/files Remark

SB_VDIAGDB Visio drawings (*.vsd), project Holds all Diagrams within a project Specific

4.3 Tribon Diagram Objects

The Diagram objects (Diagrams, Stencils and Templates) appears to be files to the user, but in fact they are Tribon
Objects stored in data banks. Normal file operations like New, Open and Save are supplied within the Tribon Diagram
Addon (i.e. the Tribon menu in Visio).

4.4 Starting Tribon Diagrams

 Select Diagrams from the Tribon M3 > Outfitting menu.

 When Tribon Diagrams starts a new

drawing or opens an existing
drawing, the backup is saved to the
Visio10 > Tribon Work > Project
 It is very important that this file has
 read write privileges
 Once the application has started select File > New from the Tribon menu.

 A File New dialogue box appears, Key in the File Name and tick the Template
box, open the Template tree and select the drawing form required.

 The following Screen is displayed

data bank operations,
when the add-on is run.

 Select Object handling under the General Options Category, and choose between User or Real time mode.

 Set this option to Real Time if the

system shall define objects upon
drop, using the current Autonaming
settings for naming.

 Select Default Shapes from the General Options Category,

 The default shapes

need to be changed to
the default shapes that
exist in the stencil folder
for specific applications

32

 The Default Shapes command sets the default shapes and Stencils for Annotation, Major Pipeline and Minor
Pipeline.

Annotation
Annotation is used during annotate action. The user can set an Annotation shape as well as a Stencil on which the
shape resides. Any shape will be annotated with the given Annotation shape. The shape will be taken from the
given Stencil. If the shape or the Stencil is not found, the default shape from the default Stencil will be taken. Label
shape is the default Annotation shape and TbGeneric.vss is the default Stencil.

Major/Minor Pipeline
Minor Pipeline is used during the Pipe Split command. The user can set a Minor Pipeline shape as well as a Stencil
on which the shape resides. When a pipe is split it cuts the pipe into two parts, one which is a Minor Pipeline. The
Minor Pipeline shape will be taken as the given shape and the shape will be taken from the given Stencil. If the
shape or the Stencil is not found the default shape from the default Stencil will be taken. Minor Pipeline shape is the
default Minor Pipeline shape and TbGeneric.vss is the default Stencil.

 Select Pipe Colour, Default text size and Default name pres from the Pipe Options Category.

 Select Annotation Styles from the Pipe Options Category

The Annotation Style command sets the Annotation in the form of Pipeline attribute values. It can be applicable to both
Major as well as Minor Pipeline.
Use
If the Use option is checked the Annotation Style will be on. Every time a Pipeline is dropped on a page it will be
annotated with the selected attribute value. If the user does not select any attribute the Annotation will not be set.

If the Use option is unchecked the Annotation style will be disabled.

Attribute
The Attribute option is a list of all attributes or properties belonging to a Pipeline. The list also includes all TDM (tribon
Data Management) attributes. When an attribute is selected the value of the selected attribute will be set as an
Annotation to the Pipeline. By default, no attributes are set. Therefore, if the user does not select an attribute the
Annotation will not be set.'

OffSets
33
There are two OffSet values that specify the distance of an Annotation shape from a Pipeline; Longitude and
Perpendicular distance. These two distances are set, to position an Annotation shape for the first time when a Pipeline is
dropped on the page. These distances are from TxtPinX and TxtPinY of the Pipeline. The default values of both the
distances are 0.
Colour
The user can set the colour of the Annotation text by selecting the colour from a given list.
The default colour is black.

4.6 Using default SB_DIAG_DEF file
The SB_DIAG_DEF file can be set up so that the tribon visio diagram options are predefined within the default file. i.e.
this will make it easier to set shipyard standards for text height etc.

The sb_diag.def file above shown the ANNOSTENSTR=TTP_PIPING this is the string to point out which stencil the
default annotation shape resides on, the EQMODULE=103 this is the default Module to be used on equipments,
EQUIPCOL=MAGENTA this is the default colour to be used on defined equipments, EQUIPTEXTHEI=12 this is the text
size (in points) for equipments, PIPECOL=MAGENTA this is the colour to be used on pipelines, PIPTEXTHEI=12 this is
text size (in points) for pipelines, VALANNO1COL=RED this the colour setting for valve annotation 1,
VALNAMEPREFIX=V this is the prefix to be used for valve names, COMTEXTHEI =12 this is the text size (in points) for
valves, INSANNO1COL=GREEN this is the colour setting for instrument annotation 1, INSTNAMEPREFIX=I prefix to be
used for instrument names, and INSTRTEXTHEI=12 this is the text size (in points) for instruments.

For more detailed information about all the defaults to be used in the sb_diag.def file see the Tribon User’s Guide >
Tribon M3 Outfitting > Diagrams > Default File, SB_DIAG_DEF.

4.7 Creation of Visio symbols (Valve)

Valve shapes are represent a part in a pipeline. A valve shape has at least one inward connection point. Connection
points on pipeline parts have to follow certain rules when they are used with the system. These rules are the as for
Standard pipe component connections in pipe modelling.

4.7.1 Two-way Valves / Parts

Connection points on two-way valves / parts have to be named as described in the picture below.

4.7.2 Three-way Valve / Parts

Connection points on Three-way valves / parts have to be named as described in the picture below

In the case of three-way parts, Connections.Pipe_2 results in a new branch. Connection.Pipe_1 and Connection.Pipe_3
belongs to the same branch.

4.7.3 Four-way Valve/Parts

Four-way parts follow the same strategy as Three-way valves/parts. A fourth connection point, Connections.Pipe_4, will
result in a new branch.

39
4.8 Pan and Zoom window
The pan & zoom window is used to make it easier to move around the drawing and find the correct location

 Select Pan & Zoom Windows from the View menu

 The Pan & Zoom window now appears in the top right hand corner of the active window

valve, equipment, etc. to. Both horizontal and vertical reference lines can be put on the same way.

4.63 Tagged pipe components (TPC’s)

Tagged Pipe Components (TPC’s) are intended to make it possible to define and use valves early in the model. They
can be defined in the equipment Application and then used in Diagrams and modelling. A TPC is a hybrid between a
Pipe part and an equipment. A TPC is system oriented, i.e. you search and work with it in the scope of a pipe system.
For instance, if you do "Remaining TPC" when modelling a pipe in system "YY", you will get all the TPC's in "YY" that
has not yet been modelled.
When the TPC is first defined, it exists in the equipment databank. It can NOT be placed as an Equipment, instead it is
placed whenever it is modelled. When a TPC is used in modelling, it is referred by a part in the model and the modelling
application handles the TPC more or less like a part.

 Select the TPC valve that you whish to be inserted into the pipeline

 Drag the TPC symbol and place it in the pipeline required

Enter all the custom properties for the TPC valve and then press the right mouse button while the vertexes are
highlighted on the valve and select define, the valve will then change colour and will also exist as a TPC pipe component

You can generate a property report from the data entered into shape custom properties. For example, you can generate
an inventory report from the data stored with Pipes and equipment shapes in a General arrangement layout.
All of the information needed to generate a report is saved in a report definition. A report definition determines which
shapes and properties are included in the report and how the report is formatted. You can save a report definition in a
file or directly in a drawing. To use the same report definition to generate reports from multiple drawings, save your
definitions in a file. To generate a report only in one drawing and easily distribute that drawing, save your definition in the
drawing.
When you generate a report, the Report dialog box shows all report definitions that have been saved in Samples\Visio
Extras and in your Visio drawing folder. To find out where your drawing folder is.

 Select the Tools menu, and then press Options

 Click the File Paths tab, and the Drawings box shows the folder location.

6.3.1 How to create a Visio report

You can set up report definitions to summarize data by including subtotals and grand totals in the generated report. You
can also sort your report by columns and rows.

 On the Tools menu, click Report

 In the Report Definitions list, press
New.

 Choose the shapes you want to report on and then press Limit

97
The Type Code is used by the system to identify a shape as an object and take actions accordingly.

 From the property menu select Type code

 Key in the value of 2 and then press Add

 Select Next.

 Choose the properties you want displayed as columns in you report,
and press Next

 Key in a name for the Report Title, then press the Sort key
Move the values up or down in the column order
and then select OK

 Press Next, Select Save in a file and then press Finish

The file is saved and can be opened for editing, one of the fields that we have selected was called SC Nominal diameter,
the display name can be changed i.e. Size (Nom.Dia) etc.

98
6.3.2 How to run a Visio report

 On the Tools menu, click Report

 In the Report Definitions list, click the name of the report definition you want to use.

 There are some Reports already setup, they exist inside the

7 Surface Treatment
7.1 Description
The Drawing above represents a ship in profile. The shaded
areas 10, 20 e.t.c. represent areas where the surface treatment
for pipes (and other outfit items) may have different values. This
is normally due to different painting applied in each of these
areas. For example, the treatment given to pipes on the upper
deck (area 70) can be vastly different to that given to pipes
within the ballast tank (area 60).

It's normal also that the pipe system also demands that certain
preparations are necessary. This is usually based on the
medium that the system carries.

Therefore the internal surface treatment is usually determined by the pipe system and the external treatment by the area
of the ship the system occupies.

The surface treatment appears as a 3-digit code on the pipe sketch thus:-

Where the external treatment (outside of the pipe) is represented by GAL (galvanise) and the internal treatment (inside
of pipe) is EPX (epoxy). These 3-digit codes are customisable and are usually standardised within the shipyard. The
number 201 is known as the item number and is used internally by the surface treatment program.

7.2 How to use the surface treatment system

This section is intended to give the users a suggestion of how to use the Tribon Surface Treatment system, all the way
down to pipe spool level.
The following examples will describe how to systemize the different kinds of information in the surface treatment system,
to achieve a simple method to initiate and update the surface treatment system’s database before and in parallel to as
the piping construction takes place.

7.2.1 Codes
It is possible to specify a customer specific standard for inside and outside treatment codes as well as codes for different
areas in the project (ship)
An area is defined as a certain space in which all pipes belonging to a certain system will have the same treatment
according to painting specifications, classification rules etc.

7.2.2 Treatment codes

Here are some examples of arbitrary treatment codes

FZ Pipe to be galvanised, inside and outside

IAx Insulation to be done outside pipes after chemical cleaning. ‘x’ could be replaced by a figure or a letter
to identify different type of insulation.
ME Outside painting after chemical cleaning
OB No treatment necessary
EY No treatment is allowed (e.g. for prefabricated pipes purchased ready with expoy coating)
OL Oiled

7.2.3 Area codes

Here are some examples of area codes

AREA 1 Open deck

AREA 15 Engine room, below the service floor
AREA 16 Engine room, above the service floor
101
7.2.4 Systemized use of record numbers (Item)
To eliminate the need of specifying treatments for each single pipe line or pipe system, it is possible to store a reference
to a fictive list of all existing treatment types.
A record in the surface treatment system is structured as below.

ITEM No.,AREA Code, SYSTEM Name, PIPE No, PRETREATMENT Text, OUTSIDE Treatment Text
INSIDE Treatment Text, OUTSIDE Treatment Code, INSIDE Treatment Code,

7.2.5 Item Number

The Item number can be used systematically to separate between three different groups of records
An example of a record group shown below

ITEM 1 – 1999 To be used for creation of a fictive list (reference records) of all
existing treatment types.

2000 – 8999 To be used for production records which optionally could have a
reference to an already specified reference record.

9000 – 9999 To be used for treatment types which are the same all over the
project (ship), independent of the areas which the pipe line is crossing through

7.2.6 Reference records

Item numbers according to examples shown ITEM_01 could now be used in the list of reference records for every
relevant inside / outside treatment combination shown by a few examples.

Note that also the system name and pipe numbers are fictive, but still there is a similarity between pipe number and the
figure that follows the “ area number” in the ITEM number. The reason is only to simplify the handling for the person
responsible for the surface treatment.

When the suggested reference records above are stored, then the input of the real production records can start

7.2.7 Production records

The item number 2000 – 8999 reserved for this group of records can be preferably be divided into subgroups. The size
of the subgroups depends on how many different areas pipe lines will be situated in.
An example of subgroups

System AA: Item No. 2000 - 2050

System AB: Item No. 2051 - 2100
System AC: Item No. 2101 – 2150

An example of Production records

A pipe line number 10 in the system AA, placed below the service floor in the engine room, will have the following input
in the surface treatment system.

Which will give the following output in the list.

7.2.8 Modelling inputs

Input to the modelling systems consist only of the area number as shown below

In batch model: the qualifier “/SURF=<area no>”

In interactive model: Surface treatment: “<area no>”

102
7.2.9 Different treatments down to spool level
Presume that a part of a pipe line, e.g. a separate spool, will be treated in a different way from the rest of the pipe line.
Presume also that this part or spool is situated in the same area as the whole pipe line.
Then it is possible to create an arbitrary area number to achieve a specific spool getting the correct treatment printed on
the pipe sketch.
e.g.
If a pipe line without any treatment should have some galvanised spools, an area number, say 120, can be stored with a
reference to an appropriate existing reference record, e.g. 9020
The pipe splitting program will then find the combination of area number 120 and the actual system name, thereby
finding the reference to item no. 9020 and finally pick up the wanted treatment to print on the pipe sketch.
The area number 120 above, defines a fictive area. Such arbitrary numbers can be created when there is need for
different treatments.
Once again, also this could be systemised as shown below

Area 100 gives OB – OB

110 EY – EY
120 FZ – FZ
141 MD – FZ
156 ME – MP etc.

Example of AREA numbers for different spaces in a project (ship)

AREA SPACE
1 Open deck
2 Steel structure on deck – Outside
3 Steel structure on deck – Inside – visible pipes
4 Steel structure on deck – Inside – Hidden pipes
5 Cargo space
6 Lockers, fan rooms, workshops
7 Dry spaces, cofferdams etc.
8 Pipe tunnels and staircases
9 Ventilation ducts
10 Cargo tanks
11 Ballast tanks
12 Oil tanks
13 Dry tanks
14 Fresh water tanks
15 Engine rooms – below service floor
16 Engine rooms – above service floor

7.2.10 Suggestion for a table of surface treatment combinations

Note that the inside and outside codes are user defined and preferably connected with some descriptive workshop
standard to be used by the production personnel.
Reference records (Item No) for a certain combination can consist of table values above added with a prefix. The prefix
can be the AREA number.
e.g. 1657, where 16 is the area number for engine room above service floor, and 57 is the number of the combination
ME - OB
All item number in the 9000 series may be used for both treatments and insulation, valid in the whole project,
independent of the areas.
The number of combinations is not normally more than 99, therefore up to 99 items could be used for each area in the
reference record list.
The suggested item group for reference record (item 1 to 1999) in the document SURF_01 is used for the base for this
table.

7.8 Copy Record via Item Number

 Note that in this example we are copying the surface treatment to a new system name. You could of course copy
the item keeping the original system name and alter the area. In either case the record can always be updated
after saving.

 Note that when pipe modelling the Area number is added to the pipe line from the production information under
pipe info update or spool info update the Area number is the number that is added into the Surf treatment field.
This information is then displayed on the pipe sketch with the inside and outside codes displayed.
