INTRODUCTION:
The Indian telecommunications industry is the world's fastest growing
telecommunications industry, with 706.37 Million telephone (landlines and mobile)
subscribers and 670.60 Million mobile phone connections as of Aug2010.It is also the
second largest telecommunication network in the world in terms of number of wireless
connections after China. The Indian Mobile subscriber base has increased in size by a
factor of more than one-hundred since 2001 when the number of subscribers in the
country was approximately 5 million to 670.60 Million in Aug 2010.
As the fastest growing telecommunications industry in the world, it is projected that India
will have 1.159 billion mobile subscribers by 2013. Furthermore, projections by several
leading global consultancies indicate that the total number of subscribers in India will
exceed the total subscriber count in the China by 2013. The industry is expected to reach
a size of 344,921 crore (US$78.3 billion) by 2012 at a growth rate of over 26 per cent,
and generate employment opportunities for about 10 million people during the same
period. According to analysts, the sector would create direct employment for 2.8 million
people and for 7 million indirectly. In 2008-09 the overall telecom equipments revenue in
India stood at 136,833 crore (US$31.06 billion) during the fiscal, as against 115,382
crore (US$26.19 billion) a year before.
A large population, low telephony penetration levels, and a rise in consumers' income and
spending owing to strong economic growth have helped make India the fastest-growing
telecom market in the world. The first operator is the state-owned incumbent BSNL.
BSNL was created by corporatization of the erstwhile DTS (Department of
Telecommunication Services), a government unit responsible for provision of telephony
services. Subsequently, after the telecommunication policies were revised to allow
private operators, companies such as Vodafone,Bharti Airtel, Tata Indicom, Idea
Cellular, Aircel and Loop Mobile have entered the space. see major operators in India. In
2008-09, rural India outpaced urban India in mobile growth rate. Bharti Airtel now is the
largest telecom company in India.
In the early 5-6 years of cellular industry average monthly subscribers additions were
around 0.05 to 0.1 million only, but now it has increasing rapidly. Now total 233.62
millions of peoples are using cellular services in India's various states and union
territories. The average growth rate of subscriber base is 61.41 per cent in 2004, 35.48
per cent in 2005, and 40.17 per cent in 2007; it may be increase to 50 to 70 per cent in the
next coming years. Till year 2007 Bharti AirTel have most of cellular subscribers in
India, AirTel have a total 42.70 million (23.09 per cent of total) and BSNL have 32.05
million subscribers (17.24 per cent of total) which in a second rank, Reliance, and
Vodafone also near about them on end of 2007.
SOME MILESTONES:
• The postal and telecom sectors had started by British Government in India. In 1850, we
may called it is an origin of Cellular phone service in India.
• The first experimental electric telegraph Line was started between Kolkata and
Diamond Harbour. In 1851, it was opened for the British East India Company.
• Govt. announced a ‘National Telecom Policy' in 1994. License for providing cellular
mobile services granted by the government of India for the Metropolitan cites of Delhi,
Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai. Cellular mobile service to be duopoly i.e. not more than
two cellular mobile operators could be licensed in each telecom circle, under a fixed
license fee regime for 10 years.
• The Cellular services were commercially launched in August 1995 in India. This
Cellular mobile service was introduced with both the operators from public and private
sector. In 1995 other 19 more telecom circles get mobile licenses.
• The New Telecom Policy 1999 announcement, and allowed FDI into telecom sector.
• 2003 - Internet and GPRS facilities are allowed through cellular services providers.
• In Jan 2004 -The government reduced import duties on the cellular sector e.g. Aerials &
Antennas from 32.7% to 21.8%, Cellular Phones from 14.4% to 5%, Cellular
infrastructure for operators from 21.8% to 16%.
• In June 2004 -TRAI issues directions regarding to roaming facility and is rules to all
service providers.
• July 2005- Regulation on Quality of Service of Basic and Cellular Mobile Telephone
Services 2005 introduced on 1st July 2005.
• Budget 2005-2006- FDI ceiling changed to 74 per cent from the earlier limit of 49 per
cent. 100 per cent FDI was permitted in the area of telecom equipment manufacturing
and provision of IT enabled services.
At presently more than 26 players are providing Cellular services in India. Some major
cellular service provider in India as follows:
BSNL, MTNL, AirTel, Idea Cellular, Tata Comm., Reliance Mobile, Vodafone/ Hutch,
BPL Mobile, Aircel, Spice, HSFL, Shyam Telelink, Virgin mobile, Hutchison Essar,
Hutchison Max, Fascel, Dishnet Wireless, Escotel Mobile, Hexacom, Sterling Cellular,
RPG Cellular, Bharti Mobinet, Usha Martin, Birla Tata AT&T, JTM/Evergrowth,
Koshika, RPG Cellular etc.

mobiles are the same.
3) To determine whether the advertisement SMS sent by the service providers are
the same.
SCOPE:
1) This project will help the network providers to focus the market segmentation
of SRM university
2) Helps in finding the network providers customer relationship.
3) Finds the customers attraction towards various network providers.
4) This will help us to determine the recharge behavior of the students in the
campus.

Aircel was recently launched in southern india (in Chennai) became really
famous really fast pace. They recently expanded their services to other
parts of india like Tamil Nadu, Assam, North East, Orissa, Bihar,
Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, West Bengal, Kolkata, Kerala,
Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Delhi, UP(West), UP(East), Maharashtra
& Goa and Mumbai. They also offer wide range of services which
include aircel pocket internet with which one can surf Internet at a
really comfortable prices in their GPRS enabled mobile devices.
I would consider that, the above mentioned companies are the best mobile
service providers in India. However, there may still be better service
providers in India.

There is significant difference in the market share between all the service
providers in SRM university.
There is no significant difference in the money spent for recharging their
mobiles by both the genders in the campus.
There is no significant difference in advertisement SMS sent by all the
service providers to their customers.

CONCLUSION:
From this we conclude that the majority of the students in the campus prefer choosing
AIRTEL as their service provider as they maintain a close wrap with the customers
by studying their behaviour.
