Where am I?

Wait, I recognize this place, I’m at the

Monterey Pop Festival, but this took place like

50 years ago, I.. I must’ve time traveled to

1967!

OMG! That’s so cool! I freakin love this time

period, everyone is so free!

I wonder if The Beatles are here? Wait I think I

see them over there!

Back when the beatles were beginning to

become popular, many parents believed that

the music was corrupting children.

Parents were used to jazzy artists like Frank

Sinatra and Doris Day. Lyrics in the songs

were never too controversial, never enough to

stir up the political pot like the 60’s were.

Songs like “I wanna hold your hand,” “Help,”

and “Happiness is a Warm Gun” was the spark

for a non conformist movement. My favorite

member was Ringo Starr because he was

strangely non political and set away from the

societal norms.

Other 60’s artists that were not too popular

with the parents were The Rolling Stones.

The Rolling Stones were very politically

progressive and brought a new sound of music

to the table, making them wildly popular to the

youth.

Both of these bands were pioneers of the non-

conformist movement and made a path for the

disco, classic rock 70’s.

Hey Megan where are you?

*Beams into the 70’s, Woodstock*

Megan: Oh my God I think I’m at

Woodstock!!

Look! OMG it’s Jimi Hendrix!

Daniel: What?? No fair! Well I’m gonna stick

around and watch Bob Dylan play for a bit

longer but I’ll meet you in the 80’s.

Megan: Have fun! I’ll be in Woodstock.

Woodstock is known to be one of the most

popular music festivals of all time!

It began in 1969 and is still going on today!

Famous artists included, Michael Jackson, The

Who, and Carlos Santana.

The Who greatly influenced the entire genre of

rock and made the world go crazy over his one

of a kind music. The Who’s music touched the

lives of all Americans, including the parents of

the nonconforming youth.

The Who was known to be one of the original

gard core rock bands. They infected the

population with their rock music and angered

the older generations.

However we can’t forget about the absolute

genius that is Carlos Santana. The spectacular

and unique way he shredded his electric guitar

stunned his audience. His Mexican heritage

also put him on track for diversifying the

music industry. Look there he is now playing

Soul Sacrifice!

But I would have to say that Michael Jackson

had the biggest effect on music in the 70’s. His

stunning vocals and fashion forward style led

the way through the pop genre. America (along

with the rest of the world) could not get over

him.

The 70’s was a soft transition from the

previous decade and many of the issues present

carried on into the 70’s.

However, the 70’s became more chill and

instead of America’s youth caring about every

injustice in the world, they were done and only

wanted to rock out and dance.

They were tired of fighting politics and began

a life of disco and drugs.

What a time to live!

*opens her phone and calls Daniel*

Megan: Daniel I think I’m ready to head over

to the most crazy decade yet, the 80’s!

Daniel: Oh boy…

*both beam into the 80’s*

Megan: Oh my God look at all these colors!

Daniel: The 80’s are so bright! Where even are

we?

Megan: I think were at… oh my god! We’re at

Live Aid!!!

Daniel: You mean where Queen, Elton John

and David Bowie performed in 1985!

Megan: Yeah!! The 80’s was a time for

everyone to enjoy and when some of the most

iconic songs and films were released.

Megan: By the 80’s, Disco had died and new

genre of electronic music and heavy metal was

taking center stage.

Megan: Songs started to sound less like

instruments and more like a computer which

mirrored the increase in technology around the

world.

Daniel: Queen played what is known to be one

of the greatest performances of all time and

proved that audiences of all orientations (?) can

love any type of music

Daniel: Queen was known for their extravagant

songs and combining knew ways to create

sound. Songs like “Bohemian Rhapsody,

Another One Bites The Dust, and We Will

Rock You.”

Daniel: One of their earlier albums “A Night at

the Opera” was praised and criticized for their

use of wide ranges and operatics.

Daniel: Queen produced six number one

singles and created a lasting impact on

generations to come.

Megan: Ugh I love Queen so much. You know

who is better though, Elton John.

Daniel: No way.

Megan: Yessss he is. Unlike Queen he had

seven number one songs and is way more

original.

Megan: Famous songs of his included “Bennie

and the Jets, Tiny Dancer, and Rocketman.”

Megan: Like Queen, Elton John opened a

bridge for original artists to express themselves

however they want.

Megan: Overall the 80’s were accepting the

new contemporary music and media. The

parents of the youth we also more accepting of

the way the younger generation wanted to live

their lives.

Daniel: I think we did a pretty good job

summing up the 60’s through 80’s through a

musical perspective.

Megan and Daniel: Thanks for watching!
