SHEQ Manager
As the SHEQ Manager for an upper tier COMAH site, my key responsibilities involve ensuring that the site is
compliant with both BOC management systems and legal requirements, with the main focus being on the Control of
Major Accidents and Hazards regulations and any changes brought about by Seveso III.
This is achieved by a combination of demonstrating visible leadership, ensuring that SHEQ is integrated into the roles
of all levels, providing focus and prioritisation to the most important SHEQ activities, and providing specialist advice
where necessary.
My responsibilities under COMAH also extend to participation at a local "off-site" emergency planning committee in
addition to acting as a company figurehead for the numerous visits from the competent authority.
In the seven months I have held this position I consider the following to be key achievements.
Assisted site to a successful outcome in recent audits including ISO14001, ISO9001, Operations and Engineering,
Management Systems and Oxygen Ignition avoidance.
As a consequence of the above success, the site acquired a high profile internal MHRP accreditation (Major Hazards
Risk Potential).
Quickly brought the Process Safety Program back in line with the required schedule.
The site had historically struggled with both resourcing and the technical content of the work and consequently the
program was 2 years behind plan.
Negotiated a quick resolution with the Environment Agency regarding a variation to the sites PPC permit.
This process could have taken several months and delayed a key installation due to a previous over-sight during the
planning process.
As a wider role within BOC, I sit on the Process Safety team of experts committee, a group that leads the process
safety agenda for BOC's UK and Ireland operations.

Facilities Engineer
The Facility Engineers role combines elements of the Shift Manager role along with responsibility for Safety, Health,
Environment and Quality (SHEQ) management.
My SHEQ role involves full responsibility of all management systems on site and a general role of developing the
knowledge of site personnel on SHEQ subjects.
The following were my key responsibilities.
Construction of the sites SHEQ plan by taking Central SHEQ targets and facilitating the process of localising the plan
with site personnel.
Measuring performance against plan, reporting progress and encouraging the team to include SHEQ improvement in
their day to day activities.
Providing SHEQ advice (technical and SHEQ systems) on new plant installations or changes to existing in accordance
with Management of Change systems and HAZOP studies.
Lead local incident investigations, and when required support larger investigations that involve off-site personnel.
Management of close out actions and sharing key lessons learned.
Risk Assessment preparation and review for all required assessments from routine tasks to large turnaround project
work and the identification of Major Accident Hazard Scenarios.
Provision of support and advice to team members regarding the subject of risk assessment and communication of
outputs from assessments.
BOC Gasses - St Helens March 2010 to August 2012
Shift Manager
Operationally responsible for St Helens Hydrogen and Nitrogen generating plants, including start-ups, shut-downs,
trouble-shooting and small maintenance tasks.
High level of involvement in the planning and execution of major plant overhauls.
Contributions include the defining of work scope, time-line planning, identification of milestones and critical path
activities.
During overhauls, key responsibilities include the control of contractors, ensuring safe isolation of plant and
equipment and delivery of safety briefings to site personnel.
Provide the sites initial emergency response / incident control in emergency situations.
Constructed significant parts of the sites Emergency Plan and delivered seminars and desktop exercise training to site
members.
January 2006 to March 2010
Deputy Production Manager
Responsible for plant and process performance and accountable directly to board level.
Use of Lean manufacturing principles to deliver improvements by minimising waste and investigating engineering and
operational improvements.
Interact with the sales and purchasing departments regarding production requirements, and the creation of the
production schedule for a site with over 40 chemical reactors.
Production scheduled in accordance with a just in time philosophy to minimise stock levels.
Setting of short term targets to production teams via production team meetings; allocation of resource such as manning
levels based on required production volumes.
Provision of technical support for site to resolve problems as they arise.
Developed the sites Process Safety Performance Indicators, lead HAZOP studies on numerous new product
introductions and LOPA on existing processes.
Provide representation for the company in meetings with regulatory bodies.
Examples include interaction with the HSE on change management and process safety management.

Introduced local audits and developed new performance indicators for site, targeting improvements in performance in

sales growth from ~£200K per month to ~£600K per month.
