Synthesis #2

Fear and personal acceptance influence influence humans to behave differently than they

usually would. An example from the Lord of the Flies is how Roger throws stones at Henry, “

Roger gathered a handful of stones and began to throw them.” ( Golding 62) Roger would not

usually do this but because there are no parents around. He chooses to target Henry and throw

stones at him, this is an example of a mask because he would not usually do this. Roger might

have been acting this way because he wanted Henry to fear him, Roger wants to be a part of the

“in group” on the island and he thinks a way to do it is to make others fear him. Another example

of how fear and desire of personal experience causes humans to act differently is through social

media. We post pictures of us living “glamorously” I think we do this to be accepted with other

teens. “ Many teenagers think that there main instagrams do not fully present authentic versions

of themselves.” ( hdfjja) They do this to show off where they are, what there wearing, and how

happy or well they are. I think that they are masking the real versions of themselves not only by

the post but also photoshopping how they actually look. Perhaps as society continues to grow,

we as a community can make it so we don’t fear not being accepted by others and learn it is okay

to be different.
