THE PROBLEM

The chapter includes the background and rationale of the study, the

problem and specific objectives of the study, its significance and scope as well as

the definition of terms.

Introduction

In this modern world, man needs education in order to receive all

necessary information to inform him whether past or present events. Education is

important factor that contributes to nation`s growth where they produce

competent people who will help for the solution of the country`s problem.

In the Philippines, many universities are offering many courses for the

student to serve as training ground for them to enhance their abilities, skills and

to gain more knowledge about the course they are taking up. Many courses may

suit their specialization and skills as individual so that they are able to become

more confident with the course they enrolled in.

In all the universities here in the Philippines, St. Paul University Iloilo is

students in a world class performances, researches and publication, highlighting

and enriching national and regional socio-cultural identity amidst the global

community (ABETA Program, 2016). All there were tried in the curriculum to

productive and globally competent graduates; however data which prove that

indeed ABETA graduates have acquired to extend outcomes were lacking. Thus,

the rational for having this study.

The researcher had chosen ABETA graduates of year 2010-2015 as

respondents to enable them to see the trend or changes as well as the terms of

job or profession that the AB English and Theater Arts currently have now. The

data serves as a basis for future planning activities to improve the curriculum of

the ABETA program and to determine the status of the graduates as well as the

relevance of the skills and knowledge they have gained in the course of their

study to their current professions.

Scope and Limitation

This Graduate Tracer Study (GTS) comprised 17 graduates of College of

Bachelor of Arts in English and Theater Arts from Academic Year 2010 to 2015

of Saint Paul University Iloilo; however, only 15 graduates responded to the

questionnaire.

The tool used in gathering the data for this study was a Graduate Tracer

Study (GTS) Form adopted from survey questionnaire constructed by

Commission on Higher Education (CHED) which the researcher used for this

study. The method of tracing the graduates included personal contact through
7

mobile phone which personally answered the questionnaire also social media

site such as Facebook and yahoomail. Questionnaire was sent through their

email addresses and key informants such as classmates and friends of the

graduates.

It took time and long patience for the data gathering for the period of three

Months (January 2016- March 2016). The basic information of the graduates

such as name, permanent address, e-mail address and contact number were not

shown in Chapter Four for this study to protect the confidentiality of the

graduates.

Definitions of terms

The following terms have been defined conceptually and operationally for

the purpose of better understanding and clarity of this study:

ABETA Program. The Bachelor of Arts in English and Theater Arts

program is a four-year course designed to form Paulinian men and woman who

can significantly contribute in the growth and development of teaching and

learning English as a second language, culture and the arts in the Philippine and

It has numerous courses such as AB English and Theater Arts, in which

our correspondents have earned a degree in. ABETA alumni have graduated

from this school.

9

Tracer Study. Also called the Graduate Surveys describe a standard

survey (in written form) of graduates from higher education institutions, which

take place sometime after graduation, usually two years. They are a means of

following graduates to find out what they are doing with the education and

training they received. Common topics covered in tracer studies include

questions on study progress, the transition to work, work entrance, job career,

Chapter 2

THEORETICAL BACKGROUND

Review of Related Literature

Reason for being single is good for your health

Being single is a choice that everyone needs to respect it. According to

(Wasson, Ph.D., 2015) being single challenges people to be more responsible for

their own well-being and totally in-charged of your happiness. Being single their

no expectations on one`s need especially in your partner or vice-versa. There

were no such things to be argued about or no certain issues that would figure it

out coz being unattached you can avoid all of those. (Wasson, 2016)

In a relationship can made you happy but being free in any mutual

commitments theirs a lot of factors that would made you happy especially at

work. If you were a single your more free to pursue your career choices in life

and can achieved more achievements without any hesitations or anyone who

would be the reason of the second thoughts. They have a better sense of who

they are, what really matters to them

Being single and successful in life doesn`t mean that you`ll going to be

single forever. According to (Masson, 2016) highly educated women are having

kids latter in life later 40 more now than ever before.

12

The Importance of Training & Development in the Workplace

According to (Frost, 2016) an employee who receives the necessary

training is better able to perform her job. She becomes more aware of safety

practices and proper procedures for basic tasks. The training may also build the

employee's confidence because she has a stronger understanding of the industry

and the responsibilities of her job. This confidence may push her to perform even

better and think of new ideas that help her excel. Continuous training also keeps

your employees on the cutting edge of industry developments. Employees who

are competent and on top of changing industry standards help your company

hold a position as a leader and strong competitor within the industry.

Unemployment rate expected to rise with new batch of

graduates

More or an half a million students graduated from college in March but

many of them might be forced to take on jobs they don’t like, or worse, not find

any at all. The (Philippine Statistics Authority, 2016) said more Filipinos had

joined the workforce but then found that not many jobs were available. Of the 2.9

million persons who are unemployed as of January, those aged 15-24 years

comprised of 48%, and college graduates,19.8%.

According to Results of the January round of the Labor Force Survey,

however, showed the unemployment rate climbing to 7.5% from 7.1% in the

previous year.
13

Unemployment not always about lack of jobs – CHED

In Iloilo City according to (CHED, 2016) The unemployment problem is not

always just about the lack of job vacancies. It is also about the lack of qualified

applicants with skills needed for available jobs.

Courses that in-demand nowadays

According to (CHED, 2016) for academic year 2014-2018, courses that in-

demand are agriculture, engineering, science and math, information technology,

teacher education and health sciences.

Setting of the study

This study was conducted in St. Paul University located at General Luna

Street, Iloilo City, College of Arts and Sciences, AB English and Theater Arts

Program.

Sample and Sampling

This study covered the total population of 17 graduates of Bachelor of Arts

in English and Theater Arts, Academic Years 2010 to 2015 of St. Paul University

Iloilo. Purposive sampling method was used in this Graduates Tracer Study

(GTS). The graduates were contacted through their email addresses, contact

numbers, social media site such as facebook, yahoo mail and through key

informants such classmates and friends of the graduates.

Only 15 of the graduates responded, returned the questionnaires and

were included in the final analysis of the study.

17

Data Gathering Instrument

The researcher adopted and used the Graduate Tracer Study (GTS)

survey questionnaire by Commission on Higher Education (CHED).

The questionnaire is composed ofthe four parts namely: general

information, educational background, trainings and advance studies attended

and employment data.

The first part of the questionnaire contains the general information about

the graduates such as name, gender, date of birth, civil status, contact number,

e-mail, permanent address, province, region of origin, location of residence and

year graduated.

The second part of the questionnaire contains the educational background

of the graduates in terms of honor(s) or awards being received, professional

examination passed, advance training attended after college, degree or

specialization and the reasons for taking the course or pursuing the degree.

The last part of the questionnaire focuses on the employment data of the

alumni. It includes items on whether they were presently employed, current

employment status, place of work, classification of employer and the job level

position. It also includes place of work, classification of employer and other

relevant information.

Data Gathering Procedures

The researcher got a list of AB English and Theatre Arts graduates of the

Academic year 2010 to 2015 from the College of Arts and Sciences Office. The

researcher obtained the list of the graduates, contact numbers and year
18

graduated. From the list, the researcher searched and informed the graduates

through social networking site such as Facebook and yahoo mail. From there,

the researcher got their e-mail addresses then send the questionnaire in word

format through their e-mail addresses and other account on social networking

site. On the other hand, some of the graduates personally participated in

answering the questionnaires.

Statistical Tool

Descriptive statistical tool was used in analysing the number of graduates

such as general information of the graduates, trainings and advance studies

attended, educational background and employment data.

As the results of all the frequency counts were summarized though

percentage computation and ranking with the help of scientific calculator.

Discussion

This study tried to determine the career outcomes and whereabouts of the

graduates after five years 2010-2015 in the standardized questionnaire from

Commission on Higher Education (CHED).

41

Profile of the respondents based on general information

Results shows that ABETA graduates within the span of five years

(Academic Years 2010- 2015) have a total of 17 graduates. Only 15 graduates

responded to the questionnaire, that there more females than males, all

graduates were within the age range of 21-33 years old, all respondents were still

single, majority hailed within the Province of Iloilo and nearby Province and a

majority came were foreigners from South Korea.

Sex

As regard to the sex of the graduates, out of 15 graduates who responded

the questionnaire. Majority of the respondents were 10 females with the highest

percentage of (66.67%) as compared to the 5 males with (13.33%). The findings

revealed that there were more female graduates who took AB English and

Theater Arts. According to Holder, (2009) affirm that many colleges and

universities of the modern times in any parts of the world, were no longer

consider as campuses for father`s or male but more considered as campuses for

female. In further more, in the span of a single generation, undergraduates

enrolment has switched from predominantly male to predominantly female. This

was further noticed by National Statistic Coordination Board (2012) when it

showed the results that women outnumbered men college graduates for over a

decade.
42

Age

The age and gaps of the graduates of AB English and Theater Arts. The most

numbered of ABETA graduates in academic year 2010-2015 were 24 of age

composed of four graduates (26.67%) followed by three graduates at 23 of age,

only one graduate (6.67%) for every ages of 21, 23, 24, 29,31 and 33.

The findings revealed that most of ABETA graduates were in 24 years of

age followed by 26 years of age that knowledge and leanings in not basses on

the level of age of a student or the number of students who wants to on learn and

to be educated as well. The knowledge and learning’s is not based on the level of

age of a student. According to (Adler, 2007) the purpose of learning is growth,

and our minds, unlike our bodies, can continue growing as we continue to live

and learn. As you can see 33 years of age was the highest age among

graduates. Age is not a hindrance in every student who wants to learn and to

reach once dream. Every student have the right to be educated and to be

respected as individuals especially here at St. Paul University Iloilo that aims to

develop academically competent professionals who will serve as responsible

leaders and intelligent followers in the building of Christian community (SPUI

institutional goal, 2016).

Year of Birth

As the results revealed, graduates who were born in the year 1982, 1985

and 1986 have the same counted respondent which made up of one or 6.67%.

Year of birth was not the bases of one`s success. Success of once self was
43

within determination and courage on how to handle and overcoming all the trials

that would come in our way.

Civil status

With regard to the civil status of ABETA graduates from Academic Year

2010- 2015, out of 15 graduates who actively responded; the graduates were all

Most of the graduates after graduation were too excited to have their first

job or having a family because of different reasons. As the results showed most

of the ABETA graduates in terms of their civil status. ABETA Graduates priorities

first their work before settling down or having a family. All of the graduates were

focusing more on their career and enjoying the advantages of being a single.

Being a single was a choice and a responsibility that everyone must respect it

and in a broader way. Having a family was not bad. However, recent research

points to the fact that we're not all meant for relationships and the many benefits

of staying single. According to (Wasson, 2016) being single challenges people to

be more responsible for their own well-being. In other words single people can

know what they want especially in pursuing what career choices what they want,

single people can know how to manage time and they value meaningful work and

because they having the flexibility to log long hours can certainly pay off if the

goal is to move up the ladder fast.

Therefore, all graduates of AB English and Theater Arts are still enjoying

the life of being a single.

44

City is the center for entertainment, investments, more jobs opportunities

and higher salaries compare to the local area. So, most of the graduates of AB

English and Theater Arts lived in the province of Iloilo which made up of 12 or

sea. Out of 15 respondents only two graduates (13.33%) of AB English and

Theater Arts who came from South Korea which made them not applicable in this

portion of the questionnaire from CHED because the scope was only just for the

Philippines area of responsibility.

So, Iloilo City where most of the graduates were apparently came from. In

St. Barbara part of Iloilo city became one of the National Airport here in the

Philippines. The city was the center of advertisements, jobs and opportunities

that can be one of the reasons of some of the foreigners staying in the City

compare to the rural area.

standardized questionnaire.

Most of the graduates came from Region Six which composed of five

provinces namely: Antique, Aklan, Capiz, Guimaras and Iloilo which was one of

the highly urbanized Province, which served as regional center.

Western Visayas comprises the major islands of Panay and Guimaras, including

several outlying islands. The region is bordered to the north by the Sibuyan Sea,

northeast by the Visayan Sea, east by the Guimaras Strait, south by the Iloilo

Strait and the Panay Gulf, and west by the Sulu Sea.

Division 54 percent of the world’s population lives in urban areas, a proportion

that is expected to increase to 66 per cent by 2050. Projections show that

of the increase concentrated in Asia and Africa.
