Linear Equations with One Variable
(Word Problem About Money)
Definition of Linear Equations with One Variable
A linear equation in one variable is an equation that can be written in the form ax + b = c,
where a, b, and c are real numbers and a ≠ 0.
For example:
2x + 4 =8
How do you solve this kind of equations?
Here’s the process:
(2x + 4) – 4 = 8 – 4 (Substract both sides with -4 to eliminate the +4 in the right side)
2x + (4 – 4) = 8 – 4 (With associative, you can move the brackets in the right side)
2x =4 (Divide both sides with 2 so you can get the x)
x =2
Another example:

To solve this kind of problem, when the coeficcient or the constant are fraction, you
have to find the least common multiply (LCM) of all denominator from fraction in the
equations. And then, you can multiply both sides with the LCM.

We know that the LCM of 6 and 3 is 6. So, the next step is we should multiple both sides
with 6. So the equations will become:

2x + 4x = 18
6x = 18
x =3

Solving Word Problem About Money

Example:
Al is saving money to buy Blackpink’s concert ticket. He already got 5,200 baht in one
month. But he only have banknotes, he doesn’t have any coins. There are twenty-baht
banknotes, fifty-baht banknotes, and one-hundred-baht banknotes. His fifty-baht
banknotes are double of the twenty-baht banknotes. His one-hundred-baht banknotes are
double of the fifty-baht banknotes. How many are there of each banknote?
SEA Teacher Project
7th Batch
Solution:
The first thing you have to do is to decide the x. To make this easier, you can assume the
x as the smallest number from all the baht-banknotes he had.
“His fifty-baht banknotes are double of the twenty-baht banknotes. His one-hundred-
baht banknotes are double of the fifty-baht banknotes.”
From that sentences, we know that the twenty-baht banknotes is the smallest number of
banknotes since it not double or triple of the other banknotes.
So, we suppose that the number of twenty-baht banknotes as x.
The number of his fifty-baht banknotes he had was 2x.
The number of his one-hundred-baht banknotes was double of the fifty-baht banknotes,
so we can write it as 2(2x) or 4x.
Now we can make the illustration like this:

20 baht + 50 baht + 100 baht = 5,200 baht

x 2x 4x
So the equation of this problem is
20x + 50(2x) + 100(4x) = 5,200
20x + 100x + 400x = 5,200
520x = 5,200
x = 10

So, his twenty-baht banknotes are 10 banknotes.

Then, his fifty-baht banknotes are 20 banknotes.
And his one-hundred-baht banknotes are 40 banknotes.

The Solution of Student’s worksheet
1. Nickhun bought the stamp, its price is 1,100 baht. So he bought two types of stamps: 3-
baht stamp and 5-baht stamp. And the number of 3-baht stamps are double of 5-baht
stamps. How many stamps does he have of each type?
Solution :
Suppose that the number of 5-baht stamps he bought was x.
And the number of 3-baht stamps he bought was 2x.
Then, the price is 1,100 baht.
So, the equation of this problem is:
5x + 3(2x) = 1100
5x + 6x = 1100
11x = 1100
x = 100

So, he has 3-baht stamps 200 units. And five baht stamps 100 units.
2. The cost of a pencil is 10 baht more than the cost of an eraser. If the cost of 8 pencil and
10 erasers is 170 baht. How much the cost of each?
Solution :
Suppose that the cost of an eraser is x. Then, the cost of a pencil will be x + 10.
The equation of this problem is
8(x + 10) + 10x = 170
8x + 80 + 10x = 170
8x + 10x = 170 – 80
18x = 90
x =5

The cost of an eraser is 5 baht and the cost of a pencil is 15 baht.

3. A total of 10,000 baht is distributed among 150 persons as a gift. A gift is either 50 baht
or 100 baht. How many person of each gift?
Solution :
Let the number of person who got 50 baht gift as x. Then, the number of person who got 100
baht gifts is (150 – x). The total gifts is 10,000 baht.
The equation of this problem is
50x + 100(150 – x) = 10000
50x + 15000 – 100x = 10000
50x – 100x = 10000 – 15000
-50x = - 5000
x = 100

So, the number of person who got 50 baht gift is 100 person. And the number of person who
got 100 baht gift is 50 person.
