Panchopara puja gives a good description of the usage of the terms. It is a

manasa puja meaning puja performed by imagining it in the mind and making it

come to life.

aatmanaa = by the purified mind

Each word is split as follows:

apaah + aathmanaa = water + by the purified mind

prithvi + aathmanaa = earth + .....

aakaas(am) + aathmanaa = sky +.....

vaayu + aathmanaa = air + .....

vahni (or agni) + aathmanaa = fire + .....

amrith (amruth) + aathmanaa = ambrosia + .....

Thus each element is offered by the purified mind.
