Ecclesiastes 7:1-14

Recap:

Ecclesiastes 7:1-14
1. Looking at verse 1, what do they mean?
i. “A good name is better than fine perfume”?

ii. “the day of death is better than the day of birth”?

Do you agree with what the Teacher claims?

2. Why is it “better to go to a house of mourning than to go to a house of feasting,”?

3. In verse 4, “the heart of the wise is in the house of mourning”. This suggest that there is
wisdom to be learned in a funeral that you cannot learn in a birthday party. What wisdom can
you learn from a funeral?

4. What do these verses mean practically? And what wisdom and rebukes can death give for
each?
V7 Foolishness of greed leads to moral compromises.
“Extortion turns a wise person into a fool, and a Death rebukes us: Can we bring these money gains
bribe corrupts the heart.” into the next life?

V8
“The end of a matter is better than its beginning,
and patience is better than pride.”

V9
“Do not be quickly provoked in your spirit, for
anger resides in the lap of fools.”

V10
“Do not say, “Why were the old days better than
these?” For it is not wise to ask such questions.”

5. From verses 13-14, how does these verses add to what the teacher is saying?

Main Point: Death is able to teach us to ____ _______, but living wisely ultimately does not have
_______ over our lives.

Application:
1. How then can we live with the limitations of wisdom then in this life?
2. We cannot know what lies ahead, so what encouragement do we have?
Psalms 139 & Romans 8:38-39
V7-10

Where can I go from your Spirit?

Where can I flee from your presence?

8 If I go up to the heavens, you are there;

if I make my bed in the depths, you are there.

9 If I rise on the wings of the dawn,

if I settle on the far side of the sea,

10 even there your hand will guide me,

your right hand will hold me fast

38
For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor

things to come, nor powers, 39
nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be
able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
