Course Description:
Students will engage in Inquiry-based research to gain further understanding of an aspect/s of
Instructional Design relevant to their practice as educators. The topic and scope of the project will be
determined through discussions with the course learning facilitator. The deliverable for the project
(academic paper, website resource development, policy protocol development etc.) will also be
determined through discussion with the course learning facilitator. Students will also gain an
understanding of various licences applied to intellectual property and education including Open
Education Resources.

Course Learning Outcomes:


Through course activities, online discussions, readings and research it is expected that students will:
 Be familiar with common terms, definitions and elements related to Instructional Design
 Gain an understanding of different copyright options in education including Open Educational
Resources
 Demonstrate competency with one or more design theories
 Plan learning opportunities most suitable to the strengths and challenges of a variety of
environments
 Develop and design intentional learning activities suitable for the appropriate environment and
the learner
Note: As this course is largely a self-directed inquiry-based learning opportunity other program learning
outcomes may apply.

Assignments and Evaluation:

 Assignment #1—Major Project— Self-Directed Inquiry


Evaluation 70%
Due date: TBA

Task: Students will engage in a self-directed inquiry investigation into an aspect/s of Instructional
Design relevant to their practice as educators.

 Assignment #2— Blog Post Discussion and Response—Copyright and OER’s


Evaluation 20% (15% blog post; 5% response)
Due date: TBA

Blog Post Discussion—


Task 1: Create a blog post discussing Open Educational Resources (OERs) and the belief that
education should be open and available (for or against, rationale and reasons why)
Task 2: Create a blog post discussing the various types of Educational licencing. Possible topics
could include but are not limited to:
 An argumentative piece for or against the use of Creative Commons licencing
 Discussion of sites like teacherspayteachers.com
 Discussion of ownership of materials created by teachers for use in their classes

Blog Post Response to Colleague—


Evaluation (2.5% per response)
Task: Respond to a peer’s Blog Post 1 and 2. After reading your colleagues blog post, constructively
respond to each of the blog entries giving a thoughtful analysis (minimum 250 words).

 Assignment #3—ePortfolio Submission


Evaluation: 10%
Due Date: TBA

Task: Students will contribute to their ongoing ePortfolio build to include their Self-Directed Inquiry
Project and companion reflection to demonstrate achievement of selected OLTD 512 Learning
Outcomes.

Final Evaluation:
All assignments will be assessed by your learning facilitator. Evaluation criteria for the Inquiry
investigation will be based on Rubric as well as discussion between facilitator and student.

*Note: OLTD students require a C+ minimum in all courses to proceed in the program.

Late Policy:
The instructors’ late policy is as follows. You are given assignment due dates on the first day of classes
and late assignments will be calculated at -10%/day after the due date. It is acknowledged that
circumstances beyond your control may occur (e.g. death in the family; unexpected illness etc.) and
arrangements for accepting late assignments may be made on contractual agreement between course
facilitator and learner prior to the due date.

Plagiarism:
Any material which, is not the original work of the learner, should be clearly acknowledged as the work
of someone else and cited accordingly; any violation of this strict policy of referencing will be considered
plagiarism and will result in disciplinary action in accordance with the VIU’s Policies for Academic
Integrity. Please review these policies and procedures.

Quotes, images, photos, music, etc. must be sourced. Creative Commons materials must include the CC
logo and state that your source is used with attribution.

Additional Information:
 The clarity, presentation, and content of any work submitted for evaluation will influence the
evaluation of that work.
 All work submitted for evaluation must follow the relevant conventions for communication (e.g.
correct spelling and grammar) before it will be evaluated.
 All text in work submitted for evaluation must be word-processed and be clearly legible.
 Attendance and/or participation in all assignments must be “passed” in order to pass this
course.
 Unprofessional behaviour could result in a withdrawal from the course. Concerns about
colleagues or the course facilitator should be handled privately and with those individuals first.
