The teacher presents a paragraph and asks students what they think about the
highlighted and underlined phrases.

There are many different ways to invest your money to provide for a financially secured
future. Many people invest in stocks and bonds, but I think good old-fashioned savings
accounts and CDs (certificates of deposit) are the best way to invest your hard-earned
money. Stocks and bonds are often risky, and it doesn’t make sense to risk losing money you’ve
worked so hard for. True, regular savings accounts and CDs can’t make you a millionaire
overnight or provide the high returns some stock investments do. But by the same token, savings
accounts and CDs are fully insured and provide steady, secure interest on your money. That
makes a whole lot of cents.

*What have you noticed about the underlined sentence? the highlighted phrase?
*What is the difference between the two?
*What is a fact? How do you arrive at facts?
*How does a fact differ from an opinion? Can an opinion be proven?

The teacher leads the discussion to the definition of Fact and Opinion.

They use oars to paddle. If a racer isn’t careful, the tub tips over. Also, if a racer doesn’t paddle
correctly, the tub spins around. In my opinion, you have to be a good sport for this race.
