Introduction n general terms, transcription refers to the conversion of an audio file or a video file
into a written document. You are taking something that was originally spoken and

General The type of transcription required depends upon what the client plans to do with the

meeting with attendees or employees, a clean transcript is probably required – something

detailed transcription will give a better sense of the speaker‘s emotional state, as well as

Transcription There are two kinds of transcription or rather two types of transcripts:

2. Clean Verbatim Transcripts (Also known as Non-Verbatim)

As a word, verbatim is powerful for its precision. When you say that you are repeating

Chapter 4: General Transcription Rules

Introduction roviding general transcription services requires much more than the ability to type.
In addition to typing and proficiency in working with online files and software

Objective rules and guidelines. These are rules that guide transcribers to deliver quality transcripts
in-line with the client‘s expectations/requirements.
General
Transcription Below are fundamental transcription rules that are observed across board. However, each
online company has its own set of rules and guidelines that you‘ll require to read through
Transcription and understand every time you are working.
Requirements
1. Use Standard US English. Do not use net speak or phonetics.
Transcription 2. Never summarize the speech in the audio you are transcribing.
Formats 3. Do not correct errors made by the speakers. Use [sic] instead. For example: ―All of my

Transcription childrens [sic] are in school‖.


Rules 4. Every sentence should end with a punctuation mark.
5. Never use exclamation marks.
Number 6. Never use ( ) instead of [ ].
Rules 7. Proofread your transcript before submitting.
8. Tag any words that you're not certain about or you can‘t get i.e. use [inaudible],
Tags [unintelligible] [xx] or [?] [sp].
9. Make Google your best friend. Always make sure you do a Google search for words that

& Grammar 10. Use ‗--‘ or ‗-‘ instead of ‗...‘. Example: ―I wanted to say something, but…‖ becomes ―I

Labels 11. Expansions for ―it‘s‖, ―that‘s‖, ―you‘ve‖, etcetera are not considered mistakes, but it‘s
preferable to transcribe them exactly as they are spoken. Example: If the speaker says

12. Break sentences into small ones where possible, always trying to maintain

Chapter 5: Number Rules


Introduction Below are basic number rules that are observed across board. However, each online
company has its own set of rules and guidelines that you‘ll require to read through and

1. One through ten is written out in words e.g. one, two, three…
General 2. Numbers from 10 on up are written in numerals: 10, 11, 20, 25, 99, etc. Write in

4. Percentages should be written as ―%‖. Example: 2%, 50%. But if the speaker says ―A

5. For fractions. Please type them out. Do not use. 1/4th instead write one fourth or a

Also, mistakes such as this/these; their/there/they‘re; it‘s/its; lets/let‘s etc. will affect your

Introduction It‘s often not possible for the transcriptionist to know the names of each speaker unless
they state their names clearly or if the client provides the names. So in lieu of names,

Once you complete a job and submit it using the "FINISH" button under "In Progress",

 A beginner without a rating (those who have not completed the first 3 jobs) WAIT for

Transcription  Transcribers with a rating of 4.5 and above do not wait. They simply pick the jobs
Rules immediately they are uploaded without having to wait for the "Make my job" button to
appear. This means that they easily get access to the best jobs, all the jobs with "cc"
Number subtitles, the clearest audios and generally all the privileges are theirs. Work hard to get
Rules here.

Tags Sometimes you'll see hundreds of jobs loading but by the time your WAIT ends, you find
just few jobs remaining....the ones that are left after the 4.5-class have picked their best.
