Unicorn

Materials and tools:


1. Yarn: light yellow for the body, pink for the snout, dark pink for the ears, grey for the hooves and
white for the horn – I used “Jeans” by YarnArt (55% cotton, 45% acrylic, 160m/50g)
2. Matching crochet hook – I used 2.2. mm.
3. Stuffing
4. Scissors, tapestry needle
5. Black sewing thread to embroider the eyes
6. Felt in different colors for the mane and the tail.

Abbreviations:
sc – single crochet
ch – chain
inc – increase (2 sc in one st)
dec –decrease (2 sc together)
dc – double crochet
sl st – slip stitch

*The toy is approximately 16 cm tall using the materials mentioned above.

The toy is worked in a spiral unless otherwise stated.

Head and body (worked as one piece)


with light yellow yarn
Rnd 1: 6 sc in magic ring (6 sts)
Rnd 2: 6 inc (12 sts)
Rnd 3: (1 inc, 1 sc) x 6 (18 sts)
Rnd 4: (1 inc, 2 sc) x 6 (24 sts)
Rnd 5: (1 inc, 3 sc) x 6 (30 sts)
Rnd 6: (1 inc, 4 sc) x 6 (36 sts)
Rnd 7: (1 inc, 5 sc) x 6 (42 sts)
Rnds 8-9: 42 sc
Rnd 10: (1 inc, 20 sc) x 2 (44 sts)
Rnd 11: (1 inc, 21 sc) x 2 (46 sts)
Rnd 12: (1 inc, 22 sc) x 2 (48 sts)
Rnd 13: (1 inc, 23 sc) x 2 (50 sts)

Stuff.
Rnds 15-33: 52 sc
I like the wrong side of the work to be the right side of the toy. So I turn the
piece inside out after Rnd 33.
Rnd 34: 20 sc, work 6 sc hooking through the sts of the opposite sides to
join. Leave the remaining sts unworked. You have created two openings
(20 sts each) for the legs. The first leg will continue directly from this point.
Rnd 35: 20 sc around the opening (20 sts)
Add stuffing.
Rnd 36: (3 sc, 1 dec) x 4 (16 sts)
Rnds 37-38: 16 sts
Rnd 39: (2 sc, 1 dec) x 4 (12 sts)
Change to grey yarn.
Rnd 40: 12 sc (12 sts)
Rnd 41: (1 sc, 1 dec) x 4 (8 sts)
Flatten the piece and close the opening by working 4 sc, hooking through
the opposite sides. Fasten of and weave in loose ends. Join yarn to the
second opening and work the second leg in the same way.
Arm (make 2)
with grey yarn
Rnd 1: 5 sc in magic ring (5 sts)
Rnd 2: 5 inc (10 sts)
Change to light yellow yarn.
Rnds 3-4: 10 sc
Rnd 5: 1 dec, 8 sc (9 sts)
Rnd 6: 9 sc
Rnd 7: 1 dec, 7 sc (8 sts)
Flatten the piece and close the opening by working 4 sc, hooking through
the opposite sides. Fasten of and weave in loose ends.

Snout
with pink yarn
Ch 10 and work around the foundation chain in a spiral, starting from 2nd
ch from the hook:
Rnd 1: (3 sc in one st, 7 sc) x 2 (20 sts)
Rnd 2: (3 inc, 7 sc) x 2 (26 sts)
Rnd 3: [(1 inc, 1 sc) x 3, 3 sc, 1 inc, 3 sc] x 2 (34 sts)
Rnd 4: (1 inc, 5 sc) x 5, 1 inc, 3 sc (40 sts)
Rnd 5: (1 inc, 6 sc) x 2, (1 inc, 5 sc) x 2, (1 inc, 6 sc) x 2 (46 sts)
Rnd 6: 46 sc
Fasten off, leaving a tail for sewing.
Sew the snout between Rnds 19 and 30, slightly stuffing as you go.
Embroider the nostrils on the snout starting from Rnd 1 down until
you reach Rnd 3.
Embroider the eyes between Rnds 17 and 19, leaving 6 sts between
them.
Ear (make 2)
with light yellow yarn
Work in rows! Turn you work after each row.
Ch 10 and work starting from 2nd ch from the hook:
Row 1: 9 sc (9 sts)
Row 2: 1 sc, 1 dec, 6 sc (8 sts)
Row 3: 8 sc
Row 4: 1 sc, 1 dec, 5 sc (7 sts)
Row 5: 7 sc
Row 6: 1 sc, 1 dec, 4 sc (6 sts)
Row 7: 1 sc, 1 dec, 3 sc (5 sts)
Row 8: 1 sc, 1 dec, 1 sc (3 sts)
Row 9: sc3tog
Crochet the ear evenly along the perimeter (three sides) with pink yarn.
Fasten off, leaving a tail for sewing. Sew the ears in place between Rows 7
and 10.
Horn
with white yarn
Rnd 1: 6 sc in magic ring (6 sts)
Rnd 2: (1 inc, 1 sc) x 3 (9 sts)
Rnd 3: into the back loops only – 9 sc
Continue working in both loops of the stitches:
Rows 4-6: 8 sc
Row 7: 1 dec, 7 sc (8 sts)
Row 8: 1 dec, 6 sc (7 sts)
Row 9: 1 dec, 5 sc (6 sts)
Row 10: 1 dec, 4 sc (5 sts)
Row 11: 1 dec, 3 sc (4 sts)
Fasten off, leaving a tail for sewing. Close up the opening.
Sew the horn in place between Rnds 4 and 7.

Flower (make 3)
Work in magic ring:
(ch 3, 3 dc, ch 3, 1 sl st) x 4
Pull the magic ring tightly to secure. Fasten off, leaving a tail for sewing.
Mane and tail
Use felt of different colors.
Mane: Cut out 3 pieces of a half-moon shape. I cut each piece
approximately 6-7 cm long and 1.5 cm wide. Pin them between Rnd 1 and
15 (see pictures). Sew.
For the tail: Cut out 3 pieces of a half-moon shape. I cut each piece
approximately 5-6 cm long and 1 cm wide. Pin them at Rnd 24 (see
pictures). Sew.
