SCIENCE DEPARTMENT
SEMI-DETAILED LESSON PLAN IN EARTH SCIENCE
ALLEEN JOY B. SOLIVIO
TEACHER I, BVNHS

February 18, 2019

I. Content Standard
The learners demonstrate an understanding of the different phenomena that occur in the
atmosphere.

II. Performance Standard

The learners shall be able to analyze the advantage of the location of the Philippines in relation
to the climate, weather, and season.

III. Learning Competency

The learners should be able to discuss how energy from the Sun interacts with the layers of the
atmosphere. (S7ES-IVd-5)

IV. Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:
1. Identify and describe the features of the 5 layers of the atmosphere.
2. Relate the importance of atmosphere to human kind.

V. Subject Matter
A. Topic:
Layers of the Atmosphere
B. Materials:
Visual Aids, worksheets, pictures, blackboard and chalk.
C. Reference:
Science 7 learner’s material, Science 7 Teachers guide
D. Values:
Life might not be possible on earth because temperature will not be regulated without
the atmosphere. We must conserve and lessen the use of harmful chemicals. We must
plant more trees and be a good shepherd to our natural resources.

VI. Methodology
A. Prayer and Greeting

B. Preliminary Activities
1. Review: “Fact or bluff”
The teacher will ask questions about their previous lesson.
The students will answer the questions and raise their cardboards with their
answer.

Questions:
1. La Mesa Dam in Metro Manila is one example of a watershed.
(Fact)
2. Recycling plastics and papers is one example of conserving our natural resources.
(Fact)
3. Coal is an example of renewable resources.
(Bluff)
4. There are no mineral deposits in the Philippines.
(Bluff)
5. Renewable and nonrenewable are the two types of natural resources.
(Fact)
C. Lesson Proper
1. Motivation
-The class will be divided into five (5) groups. The teacher will give each group a
“scrambled letters”. The students will form the letters to form aword. The group
that will first to finish the activity will win the game. Please remember, that any
unnecessary noise is a demerit to your points.

2. Presentation
- Today we are going to explore our atmosphere, we’ll get to know the 5 layers
of the atmosphere and its characteristics.

Troposphere is the layer closest to the Earth’s surface. The temperature just
above the ground is hotter than the temperature high above. Weather occurs in
the troposphere because this layer contains most of the water vapor.

Stratosphere is the layer of air that extends to about 50 km from Earth’s

surface. Many jet aircraft fly in the stratosphere because it is very stable. It is in
the stratosphere that we find the ozone layer. The ozone layer absorbs much of
the Sun’s harmful radiation that would otherwise be dangerous to plant and
animal.

Mesosphere it is the layer between 50 km and 80 km above the Earth’s surface.

Air in this layer is very thin and cold. Meteors or rock fragments burn up in the
mesosphere.

Thermosphere is between 80 km and 110 km above the earth. Space shuttles fly
in this area it is also where the auroras are found. Auroras are caused when the
solar wind strikes gases in the atmosphere above the poles.

Exosphere is the upper limit of our atmosphere. This layer of the atmosphere
merges into space. Satellites are stationed in this area, 500 km to 1000 km from
the Earth.

D. Activity Proper
- The class will be divided into 4 groups. Each group will receive an envelope with their
corresponding task inside.
Group 1 – Jingle
Group 2 – Labeling the layers of the atmosphere
Group 3 – Group discussion
Group 4 – Reporting
Group 5 – Role playing

E. Post Activity
- Each group will present their activity

F. Analysis
- What do you think is the basis for the division of the atmosphere?

G. Generalization
1. What are the 5 layers of the atmosphere? Describe each layer.
2. What is the importance of the atmosphere in our life?

H. Application
Imagine the world without our atmosphere, do you think we will survive?
VII. Assessment
Direction: Read each questions carefully and write only the letter of the correct answer. Do it in
a one fourth sheet of paper.

1. Earth’s atmosphere is composed of what gases?

a. Helium and argon c. Nitrogen and oxygen
b. Carbon dioxide and argon d. Oxygen only
2. What do you call the layer of the atmosphere where the air is unstable?
a. Stratosphere c. thermosphere
b. mesosphere d. troposphere
3. Which of the following is seen in the thermosphere?
a. Airplane.
b. Aurora.
c. Ozone layer.
d. All of the above.
4. The layer of the atmosphere where meteors and rock fragments melt?
a. Mesosphere.
b. Thermosphere.
c. Exosphere.
d. None of these.
5. In which layer of Earth’s atmosphere is the ozone layer located?
a. thermosphere c. troposphere
b. mesosphere d. stratosphere

VIII. Assignment
1. What is greenhouse effect?
2. Give at least 5 events that can cause global warming or climate change.
