ABSTRACT

Factors Affecting the Preferred Senior High School

Strands of Grade 10 Students in St. Joseph

College of Novaliches Inc.

This research study comprises the different Senior High School Tracks
offered by the Department of Education, namely as Academic Track, Technical-
Vocational Track, Sports Track, and Arts and Design Track. The basic education
takes thirteen years to complete. In addition, the K-12 Program serves as a
preparation for those high school graduates in preparation for their future
career/s.

Students nowadays experience the pressure whenever they are asked


about their preferences in senior high school strand/ track.

This study aims to determine the factors affecting the preferred senior

high school strands of grade 10 students in St. Joseph College of Novaliches, Inc.

It would see that the dependent variables relating to their Parent’s Preference,

Student’s Preference, Demand, Financial Status, and Peer Pressure were

significant factors affecting the preferred SHS strands of the respondents. This

descriptive research would use the qualitative method- case study, specifically to

assess the feedback from the respondents.


Questionnaire is distributed to all 119 Grade 10 students of St. Joseph

College of Novaliches, Inc. Academic Year 2017-2018. Most of the literature

gathered lectures about the factors that grade 10 students should make unique

choices regarding their preferred SHS track.

Strands

The K-12 curriculum is 13-year enhanced basic education system that was implemented in
2017. The K-12 program covers kindergarten and 12 years of basic education which is thirteen
years to complete. This education system under the Department of Education aimed to develop
learners’ basic skills and it serves as a preparation for graduating students’ future career.

A group of 7 students from St. Joseph College of Novaliches Inc. conducted a research about
the “Factors Affecting the Preferred Senior High School Strands of Grade 10 Students”. This
study claims that Financial Status proved to be one of the leading problems encountered by the
students in choosing their preferred strand. This research utilized the Descriptive Method that
used the qualitative method-case study to assess the feedback from the respondents. This
would see the dependent variables relating to their parent's preference, student's preference,
demand, financial status and peer pressure were the significant factors affecting the preferred
SHS strands of the students. The researchers employed the purposive sampling technique in
selecting the respondents of the study. They utilized all the Grade 10 students of SJCNI of
Academic Year 2017-2018. The researchers used Questionnaire which is their main source of
the data gathering. This instrument contain a set of specific questions based on the stated
problems in the first chapter and to validate the instrument, they tried it to four (4) grade 9
students who were not among the real respondents and according to the researchers the
purpose of the try-out is to find out the capacity of the tool to generate the needed answers to
the stated problems. They also used Frequency and Percentage Distribution in examining the
data gathered from the questionnaire. The related studies and literature helps the researchers
to gather valuable data and ideas that will serve as their guide. Based on the findings, Majority
of the respondents chose their Own Preference or Student's Preference as the factor that
affects the their decision making towards their preferred strands and they also conclude that
Financial Status proved to be one of the leading problems encountered by the students in
choosing their preferred strands. To sum up everything, this study will serve as a guide for the
upcoming batch of grade 10 students to know the possible factors that can affect their decision-
making in terms of choosing the right strand.
