Civil War Essay

The time up to the mid 1800s was not easy for early america. The divide between the

north and the south were growing day by day and the two were starting to fight against each

other. The only way this would end was not with words but with war. There were many causes to

this civil war some economical, political or social.

The main difference between the north and the south is how they made there money and

their status on slavery the north found slavery to be cruel and horrible and the south saw it as an

everyday part of life. These two perspectives lead to lots of propaganda being spread against

each other. An example of this can be found in station E were Abolitionist fighting for the

freedom of slaves in virginia created posters stating that all men were created equally and that

people should participate in a no slavery fourth of July. filler was there even before this with

things such as the missouri compromise happening in the early 1820s. During this time the

territory of missouri wanted to become a fully fledged state in the United States. The problem

with this is that if this were to happen then there would be a imbalance meaning that there would

be more slave states than free states. This lead to the compromise were missouri would be

allowed to become a state if maine could as well. Another part of this compromise was that any

new state added below thirty six and thirty minutes latitude. A part of compromise can be found
in station A where it states “That in all that territory ceded by France to the United States, under

the name of Louisiana, which lies north of thirty-six degrees and thirty minutes north latitude,

not included within the limits of the state, contemplated by this act, slavery and involuntary

(forced) servitude”

At this point the north and the south were different in so many ways but I feel than on of

the more impactful dirences was the political stance that each half of the country took. An

example of this turing into action between the two can be seen in the election of abraham lincoln.

Lincoln's main objective was not to end slavery; he aimed to unify the us into either fully

backing slavery or eliminating it. As the north had a greater population and more influence than

the south the more likely of the two was elimination. Lincoln was more favored in the north for

this reason but not everyone in the north liked him, not because they were for slavery but

because they felt that Lincoln wasn't being hard enough on slavery. Lincoln's presidency was a

far bigger deal in the south were they took him as a direcrect threat to the way the south made its

money. As a result states started to secession from the United states. The first state to do this was

South Carolina apart of this decoration can be found in sation I where it states this “The people

of the State of South Carolina…[have] declared that the frequent violations of the Constitution of

the United States, by the Federal Government, and its encroachments upon the reserved rights of

the States, fully justified this State in then withdrawing from the Federal Union”
