CHIEF ENGINEER’S STANDING ORDERS


ALL ENGINEERS TO READ, SIGN AND ENSURE THAT THE FOLLOWING PROCEDURES AND
PRACTICES ARE FOLLOWED.

 When the vessel is sailing all running parameters are to be recorded in the Log book
everyday including one during the U.M.S. night round at 2100 Hrs.
 In port or during cargo operations, the log book readings are to be recorded every watch.
 U.M.S. round to be taken from 2100 Hrs. to 2200 Hrs. by duty Engineer and duty Oilman
together. E/R to be put on ‘Manned’ on entry and ‘Unmanned’ on exit. Bridge to be informed
accordingly.
 UMS alarms to be acknowledged according to the procedures put up in the ECR.
 All COPT / COP/ BP and IG running parameters to be noted in their Log Sheets during their
operations.
 UMS checklist to be filled in everyday before putting the E/R on UMS.
 2/E to prepare watch schedules 12 hrs before departure port and get it signed by C/E. A copy
of the same should be put up in the ECR, Officer’s Smoke Room and the Crew’s Mess
Room. (Form D-55)
 Individual Work Rest hours to be maintained by all ER staff & record sheets to be submitted
to 2E at the end of the month,
 Boiler water test of the Aux. boiler to be carried out everyday. Cooling water test to be carried
out once a week.
 All emergency equipment to be checked / tried out as per schedules drawn out in the
Saturday routine register and recorded accordingly.
 Any defect noticed should be immediately informed to the 2/E/ CE.
 The Spares Parts Inventory should be promptly updated every month.
 All spares consumed should be noted down and handed over to the C/E at the end of the
month.
 All machinery must be started / stopped and operated according to their laid out procedures
in the manuals.
 The bilge wells are to be pumped into the Bilge tank. Overboard disposal of the Bilge tank to
be done through the Bilge Separator and only on approval of the C/E / as per MARPOL.
 The Sludge tank to be transferred to the Incinerator Waste Oil tank, which is to be heated
and burnt in the incinerator periodically.
 Oily rags, cardboard, etc. are to be incinerated periodically and the ashes produced to be
transferred into brown-paper bags for disposal.
 Plastics should never be incinerated or disposed overboard. They should be stored
separately and transferred to special drums on deck.
 No incineration is to be carried out in port.
 All E/R doors are to be kept shut at all times.
 Safety gear like boiler suits, helmets, safety shoes, gloves & earmuffs/ ear plugs should
always be worn on duty.
 Safety harness, goggles, welding gloves, welding mask, rubber gloves, rubber apron,
insulation gloves, etc. should be worn as the job requires.
 The Pre-Arrival checklist should be followed before arrival port and the same to be signed.
The Pre-Departure checklist to be followed prior departure and signed.
 No hot work is to be carried out in port.
 Any hot work outside the E/R workshop will require a hot work permit.
 No entry into any tank or enclosed space is allowed without an enclosed space entry permit.
 Oxygen and Acetylene cylinder valves are to shut after use and lines depressurized.
 The following routines are to be carried out daily.
 All F.O., L.O. and F.W. daily use tanks to be topped up accordingly.
 Air bottles and control air lines to be drained.
 Compressed air soot blowing of the Exhaust gas Economizer twice a day. (except in port)
 All leaky pump and valve glands to be nipped up.

 El/Off to check the amperes drawn by all running machinery.


 F.O Service & settling tanks to drain every day for any water.
 Maintenance schedule for all machinery to be followed as per PMS and same to be recorded.
 No changes to the set points of any pressure, temperature, level, time or electrical signals
are to be made without the knowledge of C/E.
 E/R must be maintained clean at all times and any leaks attended to immediately.
 No maintenance/repair to be carried out on running machinery.
 Company Quality procedures to be understood and adhered to at all time.
