We
usually listen for meaning, naturally, but it’s also useful sometimes to listen to how
people are saying things.
1. Hence, listen outside class to radio, tapes or video, and for 5 minutes each day,
choose one thing to listen out for. ‘It can be a sound that you find difficult, the
regular rhythm and stress of English, how high and low the voice goes and when it
goes high and low’ .
2. For students, the thing that can improve their pronunciation most quickly is ‘Work
on Stress’. So, notice the stress on new words and, when you speak English, make
regular stress in phrases and sentences.
4. Finally, look at speakers of English when they are talking: Do they look different
from speakers of your own language? Look at the face, the way the mouth moves,
the way they hold their head and their body. Try imitating that when you speak
English.
