Week Eight – Filming

FILMING

What practical work have you done This week I have not done much practical work, I filmed the last
this week - and how helpful was your few shots that I needed for parallel editing and a few others to
earlier planning? fill in some gaps. My earlier planning came in very helpful as it
was my storyboard that helped me to notice that I had some
shots missing.

How will this be useful to you as your By filming the few missing shots I will now be able to edit the
production process continues parallel edit montage at the beginning whereas before I would
have only had one side of it. By having all of the footage that I
need I am now ready to start editing and also finish it.

What issues did you encounter whilst When filming I experienced problems with the weather and my
out filming and how did you time management. Firstly the weather prevented me from
overcome them? filming outside when I needed to as it was raining. Although I
filmed what I could indoors on those days this still put me behind
schedule which caused me to have to rush some of the ending
scenes as I did not have enough time to film them. My time
management was also poor as I planned to film lots on some
days but barely any on others, this meant that on the days
where I had lots of time to film everything went to plan and the
outcome of the scenes was great. On the days where I had lots
to film it often started well and the first few scenes I filmed went
well but as I started to run out of time the scenes became more
rushed so they started to lose quality, some of the shots where
over exposed and out of focus. Next time I need to spread my
workload equally so that I can give maximum effort into each
scene so that it gets the best possible outcome.

How suitable do you feel your I feel that my locations were appropriate for my filming as they
locations were for your filming? worked with the story and set the feeling that I wanted to give in
each scene. All of the locations had good lighting and so I was
able to film clearly. The only locations the proved to have an
issue was at the gang leaders house because I was unaware
that there was building work going on next door so you can
hear a banging in the background of some of the shots.

How have you made use of the I experimented with new skills like tracking shots and focus pulls
technical skills you have developed so in this production, I believe that I did use them effectively but
far this year? they were definitely not perfect. I used to focus pull to shift the
focus from the characters face to the barrel of the gun, it did
work but then the focus moved back onto the face afterwards
which I did not want it to, I need to work on this skill so that I can
use it more effectively next time. I also used the skills that I have
learnt throughout this year like how to frame shots correctly, I
used this consistently throughout the entire production as it is
very important to making the production look good and it also
helps to tell the story. I used different camera angles to help set
the mood of the scenes and present the characters in certain
ways, I used low angles to make characters appear big and
powerful and I used close ups to capture emotions in tense
scenes. I think my camera work was very good and I used it
effectively apart from some shots that where overexposed.

Having reviewed your footage, are I was very pleased with how my camera work turned out, each
you happy with what you have shot was framed well. When reviewing the footage I found that
captured and does anything need some of the shots are out of focus and other are far too over
reshooting? exposed which means you cannot see anything. I need to
reshoot any over exposed shots and any that are badly out of
focus.

Are you ready to edit? If not, how far Yes I am now ready to edit.
behind are you?

What work do you need to complete I need to reshoot a few shots so that my production will look
outside of lessons to stay on track? better.
