पपप पपपप - Old king Janaka asks the young Ashtavakra - How
पपप पपपपपपपपपपपपपप, knowledge is attained, how liberation is attained
पपप पपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपप and how non-attachment is attained, please tell me
पपपपपपप प पपप all this. ॥1प

पपपपपपपपप पपपप - Sri Ashtavakra answers - If you wish to attain


पपपपपपपपपपपपप पपपपपपपप, liberation, give up the passions (desires for sense
पपपपपप पपपपपपपपपपप objects) as poison. Practice forgiveness, simplicity,
पपपपपपपपपपपपपपप, पपपपप compassion, contentment and truth as nectar. ॥2प
पपपपपपपपपपपप-पप

प पपपपपप प पपप पपपपपपपपप You are neither earth, nor water, nor fire, nor air or
पपपपपपपपपपपपप पप पपपपपप space. To liberate, know the witness of all these as
पपपप पपपपपपपपपपपपपपप conscious self. ॥3प

पपप पपपप पपपपप पपपपप If you detach yourself from the body and rest in
पपपप पपपपपपपपप पपपपपपपप consciousness, you will become content, peaceful
पपपपपप पपपप पपपपपप and free from bondage immediately. ॥4प
पपपपपपपपपप पपपपपपपपपप-

प पपपप पपपपपपपपपप पपपप: You do not belong to 'Brahman' or any other caste,
पपपपपपप पपपपपपपपप:प you do not belong to 'Celibate' or any other stage,
पपपपपपपप पपपपपपपप nor are you anything that the eyes can see. You are
पपपपपपपपपपप पपपप पपपप- unattached, formless and witness of everything - so
पप be happy. ॥5प

पपपपपपपपपप पपपप पपपप Righteousness, unrighteousness, pleasure and pain


पपपपपपप प पप पपपपप are connected with the mind and not with the all-
प पपपपपपप प पपपपपपपप pervading you. You are neither the doer nor the
पपपपप पपपपप पपपपपपपप-पप reaper of the actions, so you are always almost free.

पपप पपपपपपपपप पपपपपपप You are the solitary witness of all that is, almost
पपपपपपपपपपपपपप पपपपपपप always free. Your only bondage is understanding
पपपपप पपपपपप First Chapter

पपपपप पप पप पपपपप the seer to be someone else. ॥7प

पपप पपपपपपपपपपपपप Ego poisons you to believe: “I am the doer”.


पपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपप Believe “I am not the doer”. Drink this nectar and
पपपप पपपपपपप be happy. ॥8प

पपप पपपपपपपपपपपपपप The resolution "I am single, pure knowledge”


पपप पपपपपपपपपपपपपप consumes even the dense ignorance like fire. Be
पपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपप beyond disappointments and be happy. ॥9प
पपपपपपप पपपप पपपप-पप

पपपप पपपपपपपपप पपपप Feel the ecstasy, the supreme bliss where this
पपपपपपप पपपपपपपपपपपपप world appears unreal like a snake in a rope, know
पपपपपपपपपपपपप प this and move happily. ॥10प
पपपपपपपपप पपपप पपपप-पपप

पपपपपपपपपपपप पपपपपप पप If you think you are free you are free. If you think
पपपपप पपपपपपपपपपपपपपप you are bound you are bound. It is rightly said: You
पपपपपपपपप पपपपपपप become what you think. ॥11प

पपपपप पपपपपप पपपपप The soul is witness, all-pervading, infinite, one,


पपपपप पपप free, inert, neutral, desire-less and peaceful. Only
पपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपप due to illusion it appears worldly. ॥12प

पपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपप-

पपपपपपप पपपपपपपपप- Meditate on unchanging, conscious and non-dual


पपपपपपपप पपपपपपपप Self. Be free from the illusion of 'I' and think this
पपपपपपपप पपपपप पपपपपपपप external world as part of you. ॥13प
पपपप पपपपपपपपपपपपपपपप-
पपप

पपपपपपपपपपपपपप पपपप O son, you have become habitual of thinking- “I am


पपपपपपपप पपपपपपप body” since long. Experience the Self and by this
पपपपपपप पपपपपपपपपप sword of knowledge cut that bondage and be
पपपपपपपपपपपप पपपप पपपप- happy. ॥14प

पपपपप पपपपपप First Chapter

पपपपपपप पपपपपपपपपपपपप You are free, still, self-luminous, stainless.Trying to


पपपप पपपपपपपपपप keep yourself peaceful by meditation is your
पपपपपपपप bondage. ॥15प

पपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपप-पपप

पपपपप पपपपपपपपपपप You have pervaded this entire universe; really, you
पपपपपप have pervaded it all. You are pure knowledge, don't
पपपपप पपपपपप पपपपपपपपप get disheartened. ॥16प

पपपपपपपपप पपपपपपपपपप You are desire-less, changeless, solid and abode to


पपपपपपप पपपपपपपपप calmness, unfathomable intelligent. Be peaceful
पपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपप पप and desire nothing but consciousness. ॥17प

पपपपपपपपपप पपपपपप Know that form is unreal and only the formless is
पपपपपपपप पप पपपपपपपप permanent. Once you know this, you will not take
पपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपप birth again. ॥18प

पपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपप Just as form exists inside a mirror and outside it,


पपपपपपपपप पपपपपपपप पपप Supreme Self exists both within and outside the
पपपपपपपपपपपप body. ॥19प

पपप पपपपपपप पपपपप Just as the same space exists both inside and
पपपपपपपपपपपप पपपप outside a jar, the eternal, continuous God exists in
पपपपपप पपपपपपपप पपपपपप all. ॥20प

पपपपपपप पपपपपप Second Chapter

पपप पपपप - King Janaka says: Amazingly, I am flawless,


पपप पपपपपपप पपपपपप peaceful, beyond nature and of the form of
पपपपपपप पपपपपपपप पपपप knowledge. It is ironical to be deluded all this time.

As I illumine this body, so I illumine the world.

Therefore, either the whole world is mine or

पपपपपपपपप पपपपपपपपप Now abandoning this world along with the body,
पपपपपपपपप पपपपपपपप Lord is seen through some skill. ॥3प

पपपपपप पपप पपपपपपपपप Just as waves, foam and bubbles are not different
पपपपपप प पपप पपपपपप from water, similarly all this world which has
पपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपप emanated from self, is not different from self. ॥4प

पपप पपपपपपपपपपपपपपप
On reasoning, cloth is known to be just thread,
पपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपप
पपपपपपपपपपपप similarly all this world is self only. ॥5प

पपपपपपपपपपपप पपपपपपपप
पपप पपपपपपपपप पपपपपपप Just as the sugar made from sugarcane juice has the
पपप पपपपपप पपप पपपपपपपप same flavor, similarly this world is made out from
पपप पपपपपपपप me and is constantly pervaded by me. ॥6प

पपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपप
Due to ignorance, self appears as the world; on
पपपपपपपपपपपपप पपपपपप
realizing self it disappears. Due to oversight a rope
पपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपप
appears as a snake and on correcting it, snake does
पपपपपपपपपपपपपपपप प पपप
प-पप not appear any longer. ॥7प

पपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपप Light is my very nature and I am nothing else
पपपप besides that. That light illumines the ego as it
पपप पपपपपपपप पपपपपप illumines the world. ॥8प

पपप पपपपपपपपप Amazingly, this imagined world appears in me due


पपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपप to ignorance, as silver in sea-shell, a snake in the
पपपपपपप पपपपपप Second Chapter

पपपपपप rope, water in the sunlight. ॥9प

पपपप पपपपपपपप पपपप प-पप

पपपपप पपपपपपपपप पपपपपप


This world is originated from me and gets
पपपपपप पपपपपपपपपप
absorbed in me, like a jug back into clay, a wave
पपपप पपपपपप पपप पपपपप
पपपप पपपप पपपप प-पपप into water, and a bracelet into gold. ॥10प

Amazing! Salutations to me who is indestructible
पपपपपप पपपप पपपपपप पपप
and remains even after the destruction of the
पपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपप
whole world from Brahma down to the grass.

पपपपपप पपपपपपपपप Amazing! Salutations to me who is one,who
पपपपपपपप पपपपप पपपपपपप appears with body, neither goes nor come
पपपपपपप पपपपपपपपपपपपपप anywhere and pervades all the world. ॥12प

पपपपप पपपपपपप पपपपपपप Amazing! Salutations to me who is skilled and
पपपपपपपपपप पपपपपप there is no one else like him, who without even
पपप पपपपपप पपपप पपपपपपप- touching this body, holds all the world. ॥13प

Amazing! Salutations to me who either does not
पपपप पप पपपपपप पपपपपप
possess anything or possesses anything that could
पपपप पपपप पप पपपपप पपप
पपपपपपपपपपपपपपप-पपप be referred by speech and mind. ॥14प

पपपपपप पपपपपप पपप पपपपपप


पपपपपपप पपपपपप पपपपपपपप Knowledge, object of knowledge and the knower,
पपपपपपपपप पपपप पपपपपपप these three do not exist in reality. The flawless self
पपपपपपपपप पपपपपपपप प- appears as these three due to ignorance. ॥15प

पपपपपपपपपपप पपपपप
पपपपप- Definitely, duality (distinction) is the fundamental
पपपपपपपपपपपप पपपपपप reason of suffering. There is no other remedy for it
पपपपपपपपपप पपपप पपपपप other than knowing that all that is visible, is unreal,
पपपपपप पपपपपपपपपपप प- and that I am one, pure consciousness. ॥16प

पपपपपप पपपपपपप पपपप I am of the nature of light only, due to ignorance I
पपप पपपपपपप पपपपपप have imagined other attributes in me. By reasoning
पपपपपपपपपपप thus, I exist eternally and without cause. ॥17प

For me there is neither bondage nor liberation. I

am peaceful and without support. This world

though imagined in me, does not exist in me in

पपपपपपप प पपप पपपपपपपपप- reality. ॥18प

प पपपपपपपपप पपपपपपपपप Definitely this world along with this body is non-
पपपपपपपपपपपपपप पपपपप प existent. Only pure, conscious self exists. What else
पपपपपपपपपप is there to be imagined now?प19प

पपपपपपपपपप पपप पपपप The body, heaven and hell, bondage and liberation,
पपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपप and fear, these are all unreal. What is my
पपप पप पपपपपप पपपपपपपपपप connection with them who is conscious. ॥20प

प पपपपपप पपपपपप पपप Amazingly, I do not see duality in a crowd, it also
पपपपपपपप पपपपपपपप appear desolate. Now who is there to have an
पपप पपपप पपपपपपपपपपपप- attachment with. ॥21प

पपपप पपपपपप पप पपपपप I am not the body, nor is the body mine. I am
पपपपप पप पप पपपप consciousness. My only bondage is the thirst for
पपपपपपप पपपपपप पपपपपपप life. ॥22प

पपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपप
Amazingly, as soon as the mental winds arise in the
पपपपपपपपपप
infinite ocean of myself, many waves of surprising
पपपपपपपपपपपपपपप
पपपपपपपपप पपपपपपपपप प- worlds come into existence. ॥23प

पपपपपपप पपपपपप Second Chapter

पपपपपपपपपपपपपपप
पपपपपपपपप पपपपपपपपपपप As soon as these mental winds subside in the
पपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपप infinite ocean of myself, the world boat of trader-
पपपपपपपप पपपपपपपपप प- like 'jeeva' gets destroyed as if by misfortune. ॥24प

Amazingly, in the infinite ocean of myself, the
पपपपपपपप पपपपपपप
waves of life arise, meet, play and disappear

पपपपपपपपपपपपपपपप Ashtavakra says - Know self as indestructible and
पपप पपपपपपप पपपपपपपपप one. How could a wise man having self-knowledge
पपपपपपपपपपपपपप पपपपपप can like acquiring wealth?प1प

Not knowing self leads to attachment in false sense
पपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपप
objects just as mistakenly understanding mother of
पपपपपपपपपपपपपप पपपप
पपप पपपपपपपपपपपप- पप pearl as silver invokes greed. ॥2प

This world originates from self like waves from the
पपपपपप पप पपपपपप
sea. Recognizing, "I am That", why run like a
पपपपपपपपपपप पपपपपपप

After hearing self to be pure, conscious and very
पपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपप
beautiful, how can you be attracted to sexual
पपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपप
objects and get impure?प4प

For a sage who knows himself to be is in all beings
पपपपपपपपपप पपपपपपपप
and all beings in him, retaining attachment is
पपपपपपपपपप पपपपपपपप

पपपपपपपपपपपपप For the one aspiring for highest non-dual Lord and
पपपपपपपपपपप fully aware of the meaning of liberation,
पपपपपपपप पपपपपपप subjugation to desires is surprising. ॥6प

पपपपपपपपपपपपपपप- For a person having reached his last time,
पपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपप incapable of enjoying and knowing it to be enemy
पपपपपपपप of the gained knowledge, it is surprising to be after
पपपपपपपपपपपपपपप sexual desires. ॥7प
पपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपप- पप

पपपपपपपप पपपपपपपपप Suprise, unattached to this and the other world,


पपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपप those who can discriminate between the
पपपपपपपप पपपपपपपपपपप permanent and the impermanent, and wish to
पपपपपपपप पप पपपपपपपपपप- liberate are afraid of liberation. ॥8प

The wise who always see self only, are neither
पपपपपपपपपपपप पपपपपपप
pleased nor get angry whether they are feted or
पपपपपपप पपपपप पपपपपप

How can noble men be perturbed by praise or
पपपपपपप पपपप पपपपपपपपप
पपप पपपपपपपपपप blame who see their bodies alike to others. ॥10प

Devoid of any questions, seeing this world as
पपपपपप पपपपपपपपपपप
imagined in Maya, how can one with resolute
पपप पपपपपपपपप पपपपपप
intelligence be fearful of even the incident
पपप पपपपपपपप पपपपपपपप-
death?प11प

Who can be compared to the saint, free from
पपपपपपपपपपप पपपपपपपपप
desires even in disappointment and satisfied with
पपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपप
the knowledge of self?प12प

पपपपपपपपप पप पपपपपप
पपपपपपपपपपप पपपपपप Know this world to be visible due to its very nature,
पपप पपपपपपपपपपप it is non-existent actually.How can a person with
पपपपपपपप resolute intelligence discriminate things as to be
प पपप पपपपपप पपपपपपपप- taken or to be rejected?प13प

पपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपप
पपपपपपपपपपपपपपप One who has given up inner passions, is beyond
पपपपपपपपप doubts and is without any desires does not feel
पपपपपपपपपपप पपपप pain or pleasure due to random events. ॥14प

पपपपपप पपपपपप Fourth Chapter

पपपपपपपपप पपपप - Ashtavakra says: The self - aware wise man takes
पपपपपपपपपपपपपप पपपपपप the worldly matter sportively, he just cannot be

A yogi feels no joy even after attaining a state for

which Indra and all other demi-gods yearn for.

पपपपपपप पपपपपपपपप He who has self-knowledge remains untouched by
पपपपपप good and bad even internally, as the sky cannot be
प पपपपपपपपपप पपपपप contaminated by the presence of smoke in it. ॥3प

पपपपपपपपप पपपपपपपपप
पपपपपप पपप पपपपपपपपप Who can prevent a great man from living in the
पपपपपपपप पपपपपपपप present as per his wish as he knows himself as this
पप पपपपपपपपप पपपपपप पपपप- whole world. ॥4प

पपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपप
From Brahma down to the grass, in all four
पपपपपपपपप पपपपपपपपपप
categories of living creatures, who else can give up
पपपपपपपपपप पप पपपपपपपप-
desire and aversion except an enlightened man.
पपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपप-

पपपपपपपपपपपप पपपपपपप-
पपपपपप पपपपपपपपपप It is very rare to know Self as One and Lord of the
पपप पपपपपप पपपप पपपपपप world, and he who knows this does not fear
प पपप पपपप पपपपपपपपपपप- anyone or anything. ॥6प

पपप pure. What do you want to renounce? Dissolve

As bubbles rise in the sea, the world originates

from non-dual Self. Know this and be one with

पपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपप In spite of being visible from eyes, this world is


पपपपपप पपपपपपपपपप पपपपपप unreal. You are immaculate and this world does
पपपपपपपपप पप पपपपपपप not exist in you like an imagined snake in a
पपपपप पपप पपपपपप- पप rope. Know this and be one with Self. ॥3प

पपपपपपपपपप पपपपप Know yourself equal in pleasure and pain,


पपपपपपपपपपपपप पपपप complete, equal in hope and disappointment,
पपपपपपपपपपपपपप पपप- equal in life and death and eternal and be one
पपपपपप पपप पपपपपप- पप with Self. ॥4प
पपपप पपपपपप Sixth chapter

पपपपप पपपपपपपप Ashtavakra says - I am infinite like space, and this world is
पपपपप unimportant like a jar. This is Knowledge. This is neither to
पपप पपपपपप पपपपपपप be renounced nor to be accepted but to be one with it. ॥1प

I am like a vast ocean and the visible world is like its waves.

King Janaka says: In infinite ocean of myself, world

wanders here and there like a ship driven by its own

wind. But it does not create turbulence in me. ॥1प

पपपपपपपपप पपपपपपपपप In infinite ocean of myself, world rises and vanishes
पपपपप पपपपपपपपपपप naturally like a wave by 'Maya'. But it does not cause any

good deeds will not result in peace

प पपपपपपप प पपपपपपपप- पप senses. He neither desires nor gets
disappointed. ॥3प

Pleasure-pain and birth-death are due to

previous actions (which decide fate). One

who knows it with definiteness acts

without desire. He acts playfully and never

Worry gives rise to suffering and nothing

Neither I am this body, nor this body is

This world of many wonders, actually does

Yogis, attached with their bodies think in terms of

bondage. But I exist pleasantly in all situations

abandoning the feelings of attachment and

I, actually, concur no benefit or loss while taking

rest, moving, sleeping, sitting, walking or

dreaming. Hence I exist pleasantly in all situations.

पपपपपपपपपप पपपपप I understand by experience that pleasure and pain


पपपपपपपपपपपपप पपपपपपप come and go again and again. Hence I exist
पपपपपपपप पपपपपपपपपपपप- pleasantly in all situations abandoning the feelings
पपपप पपपपपपपपपपप- पप of auspicious(good) and inauspicious(bad). ॥7प

Neither are you this body nor this body is yours,

you are not the doer of actions or the one who

bears their results. You are consciousness,

eternal witness and without desires so stay

Know that all beings exist in you and you exist

in all beings. So leave ego and attachment and

पपपपपपपपपपपपपपप पपपप पप attributes of nature stays, comes and goes. Soul
पपपपप प पपपप पपपपपप (you) neither come nor go, so why do you
पपपपपपपपपपपपपपपप- पप bother about it. ॥9प

पपपपपपपपपपपप पपपपपपपपप This body may remain till the end of Nature or
पपपपपपपपपपपप पप पपपपप is destroyed today, you are not going to gain and
पपप पपपपपपप पपप प पप पपपपपप- lose anything from it as you are consciousness.

This world rises and subsides in you naturally

as waves in a great ocean. You do not gain or

पप पपपपपपपपप पपपपप this world is not separate from you. So how can

You are alone in this imperishable, calm,

conscious and stainless space so how can birth,

You being one, appear to be many due to your

multiple reflection. Is gold different from

bracelets, armlets and anklets?प14प

पपप पपपपपपप पपपप This is me and that is not me, give up all such
पपपपपपपपप पपपपपपप dualities. Decide that as a soul, you are
पपपपपपपपपपपप पपपपपपपपप everything, have no other resolutions and stay
पपपपपपपपपपप पपपप पपपपप- पपप blissfully. ॥15प

पपपपपपपपपपपप पपपपपप This world appears to be real only due to


पपपपपपप पपपपपपपपपप ignorance. You alone exist in reality. There is
पपपपपपपपपपपप पपपपपप पपपपपप nothing worldly or unworldly apart from you
पपपपपपपप प पपपपपपपप- पपप any how. ॥16प

पपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपप पपपपपप Decide that, this world is unreal like an


पपपपप पपपपपप Fifteenth Chapter

प पप पपपपपपपपपप पपपपपप पप liberation. Be fulfilled and wander happily.

When mind is free from confusion of doing and not

doing, it does not desire righteousness, wealth, sex or

पपपप पपपपपपपपपपप Neither he is averse to senses or is attached to them
पपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपप but he is definitely indifferent to their acceptance and

पपपपपपपपपपपपपपपप As long as there is thought of acceptance and rejection
पपपपपप पपपपप पपपपप पप of senses, seed of this world-tree exists. So, take shelter

पपपपपपपपपप पपपपप पप पपप Habit gives rise to attachment and rejection brings
पपपपपपपपपपपपप पपपपपप aversion. So, an intelligent person should stay
पपपपपप indifferent like a child. ॥8प

पपपप पपपपपपपपपपपप A person who is attached to senses wants to leave this
पपपपपपप पप पपपपपपपपपप- world to avoid the problems. But the one who is
पपपपपपपपपप प indifferent to these problems does not feel pain. ॥9प

One who wants liberation and is also attached to his
पपपपपपप पपपप पपपप
body, is neither knowledgeable nor yogi. He just

Unless you forget everything else, you will not be

established in self, even though Shiva, Vishnu or

पपपपपपपपप पपपप - Ashtavakra says: He has attained the fruits

of Knowledge and Yoga both, who is

content, is of purified senses, and always
पपपपपप पपपपपपपपपपपपपपप पपपपपप
पपपपप पपपप पप पपपपप- पप enjoys his solitude. ॥1प

The knower of truth is never troubled by
पपपपपपपपपप पपपप पपपपपपपप
anything in this world, for the whole
पप पपपप पपपपपप
world is completely pervaded by that
पपपपपप पपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपप-
पप Brahma(Lord) alone. ॥2प

प पपपप पपपपपप पपपपप None of the senses can please a man, who
पपपपपपपप पपपपपपपपपपपपप is established in Self, just as Neem leaves
पपपपपपपपपपपपपपपप- do not please the elephant that likes
पपपपपप पपपपपपपपपपपपपप- पप Sallaki leaves. ॥3प

पपपपप पपपपपप पपपपपपपप


Such man is rare who is not attached to
प पपपपपपपपपपपपपप
the pleasures enjoyed, and does not desire
पपपपपपपपप पपपपपपपपपपप
पपपपप पपपपपपपपपपपप- पप pleasures which are unattained. ॥4प

People desirous of worldly pleasures are


पपपपपपपपपपप पपपपपप
seen and people desirous of liberation are
पपपपपपपपपपप पपपपपपपप
also seen in this world. But one who is
पपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपप
indifferent to both of these desires is
पपपपप पप पपपपपपपपप- पप
really rare. ॥5प

पपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपप Only few great souls are free from


पपपपपप पपपप पपपप attachment and repulsion to
पपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपप righteousness, wealth, desires, liberation,
पपपपपपपपपपप प पपपपप- पप life and death. ॥6प

पपपपप प पपपपपपपपपप He neither desires end of this world, nor


प पपपपपपपपपपप प पपपपपपप despise its continued existence. He lives
पपप पपपपपपप पपपपपपप the life as it is, feeling content and grateful.
पपपप पपपपप पपप पपपपपपपप- पप ॥7प

पपपपपपपपपपपप पपपपपपपप- Blessed by this knowledge, subsiding


पपपपपप पपपपपपप पपपपप
intelligence in Self, they stay content even
पपपपपप पपपपपपप पपपपपपप
in seeing, hearing, touching and eating.

पपपपपप पपपपपपपपपपपप पपपपपप Keeping their gaze unoccupied, having


पपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपप पप stilled the tendency of their senses, they
प पपपपपप प पपपपपपपपपपप have no attachment or aversion for this
पपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपप- पप feeble world. ॥9प

प पपपपपप प पपपपपपपप Aha! in that supreme state, where there is


पपपपपपपपप प पपपपपप no wakening, no sleep, no opening or
पपप पपपपप पपपपपप closing of eyes, rarely someone with
पपपपपप पपपपपपपपपपपपप- पपप liberated consciousness stays. ॥10प

पपपपपपप पपपपपपप पपपपपपप Always established in self, with stainless


पपपपपपप पपपपपपपपप intent everywhere, free from all the
पपपपपपपपपप पपपपपप desires, such a liberated man always
पपपपपप पपपपपपप पपपपपपपप- पपप shines. ॥11प

Even in, seeing, hearing, feeling, smelling,
पपपपपपपपप
eating, taking, speaking, walking, desiring
पपपपपप पपपपपपप पपपप पपपपपपप
and not desiring such a great soul
पपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपप
पपपपप पप पपपपपपपपप- पपप basically does nothing. ॥12प

प पपपपपपप प प पपपपपप
He neither blames nor praises, he neither
प पपपपपपप प पपपपपपपप
gives nor takes. Indifferent from all these
प पपपपप प पपपपपपपप
he is free in every way. ॥13प

One who remains unperturbed on seeing
पपपपपपप पप पपपपपपपपपपप
women with desire or death, established
पपपपपपपपपपप पपपपपपप
पपपपप पप पपपपपपपपप- पपप in self, that noble man is liberated. ॥14प

पपपप पपपपप पपप पपपपपपप For such a man with patience, pleasure
पपपपपपप पपपपपपप पप and pain, men and women, success and
पपपपपप पपप पपपपपप failure are alike. For him everything is
पपपपपपप पपपपपपपपपपपप- पपप equivalent. ॥15प

In a person free from attachment for this


प पपपपप पपप पपपपपपपप
world, there is neither aggression nor
पपपपपपपपप प प पपपपपप
submissiveness, neither pride nor
पपपपपपपपप पपप प पपपपपप
lowliness, neither surprise nor agitation.
पपपपपपपपपपप पपपपपप- पपप

प पपपपपप पपपपपपपपपपपप Liberated man neither dislikes sense


पपपपपप पपपपपप Seventeenth Chapter

प पप पपपपपपपपपपप gratification nor likes them, hence he


पपपपपपपपपप पपपपपप remains unperturbed in their achievement
पपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपप- and non-achievement. ॥17प

पपपपपपपपपपपप- Beyond doubts and solutions, good and


पपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपप
bad, a person with still mind, remains
पपपपपपपपपपप प पपपपपप
established in self. ॥18प
पपपपपपपपप पपपपपपपपपपप- पपप

पपपपपपप पपपपपपपपप A man who is free from attachment, free of


प पपपपपपपपप पपपपपपपपप ego, with a definitive view of non-
पपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपप existence of this visible world, even while
पपपपपपपपपप पपपपप पपपप- पपप doing does not do anything. ॥19प

पपपपपपपपपपपपपप Having attained a state of mind which is


पपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपप devoid of delusion, dream and inertia and
पपपप पपपपप पपपपपपपपपप full of light, one should discard all mental
पपपपप पपपपपपपपपपपप- पपप desires. ॥20प

blissful, serene light like awareness

which removes delusion like a dream.

One may indulge in all sorts of pleasure

by acquiring various objects of

happy without their inner renunciation.

पपपपपपपपपपपपपपपप whose mind is burnt by the intense flame
पपपप पपपपपपपपपपपपपप- of what to be done and what not to be

पपपपपपप पपपपपपपप- पप done. How can one attain bliss of the


nectar-stream of peace without being
desire-less?प3प

पपपपपप पपपपपपपपपपप This existence is just imagination. It is


प पपपपपपप पपपपपपपपप nothing in reality, but there is no non-
पपपपपपपपपपप पपपपपपपपप being for natures that know how to
पपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपप- पप distinguish being from non being. ॥4प

The realm of one's own self is not far


प पपपप प प पपपपपपपप-
away, and nor can it be achieved by the
पपपपपपपपपपपपप पपपप
addition of limitations to its nature. It is
पपपपपपपपपपप पपपपपपपप
unimaginable, effortless, unchanging and
पपपपपपपपपप पपपपपपपपपपप- पप
spotless. ॥5प

पपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपप By the simple elimination of delusion and


पपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपप the recognition of one's true nature,
पपपपपपप पपपपपपपपप those whose vision is unclouded live free
पपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपप- पप from sorrow. ॥6प

पपपपपप पपपपपपपपपपप-
Knowing everything as just imagination,
पपपपपप पपपपपप पपपपपपप
and himself as eternally free, how should
पपप पपपपपपप पपपप पप
the wise man behave like a fool?प7प
पपपपपपपपपपप पपपपपपपपप- पप

पपपपप पपपपपपपपप पपपपपपपपप Knowing himself to be God and being and


पपपपपपपप प पपपपपपपप non-being just imagination, what should
पपपपपपपप पपप पपपपपपपप the man free from desire learn, say or
पपप पपपपपप प पपपपप पपपपपपप- पप do?प8प

पपप पपपपपपप पपपप Considerations like 'I am this' or 'I am not


पपप पपपपपप पपपपपपपपप this' are finished for the yogi who has
पपपपपपपपपपपप पपपपपपपपप gone silent realising 'Everything is
पपपपपपपपपपपपप पपपपपपपपप- पप myself'. ॥9प

प पपपपपपपप प पपपपपपपपपप For the yogi who has found peace, there
पपपपपपपप प पपपपपप is no distraction or one-pointedness, no
प पपपप प प पप पपपपप higher knowledge or ignorance, no
पपपपपपपपपप पपपपपपपपप- पपप pleasure and no pain. ॥10प

पपपपपपपपपप पपपपपपपपपपप प The dominion of heaven or beggary, gain


पपपपपपपप पपप पपपप or loss, life among men or in the forest,
पपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपप these make no difference to a yogi whose
पपपपपपप पपपपपप Eighteenth Chapter

प पपपपपपपपपपप पपपपपपपपप- पपप nature it is to be free from distinctions.

There is no religion, wealth, sensuality or
पपप पपपपपप पपप पपपपपपपपप
discrimination for a yogi free from the
पपप पपपपपपप पपपप
pairs of opposites such as 'I have done
पपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपप
पपपपपपपपप- पपप this' and 'I have not done that'. ॥12प

पपपपपप पपपपप पपपपपपपप There is nothing needing to be done, or


प पपपप पपपप पपपपपप any attachment in his heart for the yogi
पपप पपपपपपपपप liberated while still alive. Things are just
पपपपपपपपपपपपप पपपपपपपपप- पपप for a lifetime. ॥13प

पपप पपपप पपप प पप पपपपपप There is no delusion, world, meditation


पपप पपप पपपपपप पपप पपपपपपपप on That, or liberation for the pacified
पपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपप great soul. All these things are just the
पपपपपपपपपपपप पपपपपपपपपपप- पपप realm of imagination. ॥14प

पपप पपपपपपपपप पपपपपप प He by whom all this is seen may well


पपपपपपपप पपपपप पपप make out he doesn't exist, but what is the
पपपपपपपपप पपप पपपपपप desireless one to do? Even in seeing he
पपपपपपपपप प पपपपपपपपप- पपप does not see. ॥15प

पपप पपपपपप पपप पपपपपप He by whom the Supreme Brahma is seen


पपपपप पपपपपपपपप पपपपपपपपपप may think 'I am Brahma', but what is he
पपप पपपपपपपप पपपपपपपपपप to think who is without thought, and who
पप प पपपपपपपपप- पपप sees no duality. ॥16प

पपपपपप पपपपपपपपपपपपपपप
He by whom inner distraction is seen
पपपपपप पपपपपप पपपपपप
may put an end to it, but the noble one is
पपपपपपपप प पपपपपपपपपप
not distracted. When there is nothing to
पपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपप पपपपपपप-
achieve, what is he to do?प17प
पपप

पपपप पपपपपपपपपपपपप The wise man, unlike the worldly man,


पपपपपपपपपपप पपपपपपप does not see inner stillness, distraction or
पप पपपपपप प पपपपपपपप fault in himself, even when living like a
प पपपप पपपपपप पपपपपपपपप- पपप worldly man. ॥18प

पपपपपपपपपपपपप पपप- Nothing is done by him who is free from


पपपपपप पपपपपपपपप पपपपप being and non-being, who is contented,
पपप पपपपपपपपपपप पपप desireless and wise, even if in the world's
पपपपपपप पपपपपप Eighteenth Chapter

पपपपपपपपपपप पपपपपपपपपपपप- पपप eyes he does act. ॥19प

पपपपपपपपप पप पपपपपपपप पप
The wise man who just goes on doing
पपप पपपपपप पपपपपपपपपप
what presents itself for him to do,
पपप पपपपपपपपपपपपपप
encounters no difficulty in either activity
पपपपपपपपप पपपपपपप पपपपपपपप-
पपप or inactivity. ॥20प

पपपपपपपपप पपपपपपपप He who is desireless, self-reliant,


पपपपपपपपपप पपपपपपपपपपपप independent and free of bonds functions
पपपपपपपप पपपपपपपपपपपप like a dead leaf blown about by the wind
पपपपपपप पपपपपपपपपपपपपपप- पपप of causality. ॥21प

पपपपपपपपप पप पपपपपप There is neither joy nor sorrow for one


प पपपपप प पपपपपपपपप who has transcended samsara. He lives
प पपपपपपपप पपपपपप always with a peaceful mind and as if
पपपपप पप पपपपपपपप- पपप without a body. ॥22प

पपपपपपपप प पपपपपपपपपप He whose joy is in himself, and who is


पपपप पपपप प पपपपपपपपपप peaceful and pure within has no desire
पपपपपपपपपपप पपपपपप for renunciation or sense of loss in
पपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपप- पपप anything. ॥23प

पपपपपपपपप पपपपपपपपपपपपप For the man with a naturally empty mind,


पपपपपपपपपपप पपपपपपपपप doing just as he pleases, there is no such
पपपपपपपपपपपप पपपपपप thing as pride or false humility, as there is
प पपपप पपपपपपपपपपप- पपप for the natural man. ॥24प

पपपप पपपपप पपपपपपप This action was done by the body but not
प पपप पपपपपपपपपपपप by me'. The pure-natured person
पपप पपपपपपपपपपपप पप thinking like this, is not acting even when
पपपपपपपपपप पपपपप पपपप- पपप acting. ॥25प

He who acts without being able to say


पपपपपपपपप पपपपपप
why, but not because he is a fool, he is
प पपपपपप पपपपपपप
one liberated while still alive, happy and
पपपपपपपपपपप पपपप पपपपपपपप
blessed. He thrives even in samsara.
पपपपपपपपप पपपपपपपप- पपप

He who has had enough of endless
पपपपपपपपपपपपपपपप
considerations and has attained to peace,
प पपपपपप प पपपप
does not think, know, hear or see. ॥27प

He who is beyond mental stillness and


पपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपप distraction, does not desire either
प पपपपपपपपपपप पपपपपप liberation or anything else. Recognising
पपपपपपपपप पपपपपपप पपपपपप that things are just constructions of the
पपपपपपपपपपपपप पपपपपपपपप- पपप imagination, that great soul lives as God
here and now. ॥28प

He who feels responsibility within, acts


पपपपपपपपप पपपपपपपपपपप
even when not acting, but there is no
प पपपपप पपपपप पपप
sense of done or undone for the wise
पपपपपपपपपपपपप प
man who is free from the sense of
पपपपपपपपपप पपपपपपपप- पपप
responsibility. ॥29प

पपपपपपपपपप प प पपपपपपपप-
The mind of the liberated man is not
पपपपपप पपपपपपपपपपपपपप
upset or pleased. It shines unmoving,
पपपपपप पपपपपपपपप
desireless, and free from doubt. ॥30प
पपपपपप पपपपपपपप पपपपपपपप- पपप

पपपपपपपपपपप पपपपपपपपप पपपप


पपपपपपपपप प पपपपपपपपपप He whose mind does not set out to
पपपपपपपपपपपपपपप पपपपप meditate or act, meditates and acts
पपपपपपपपपपपप पपपपपपपपपपपप- without an object. ॥31प

पपपपपपप पपपपपपपपपपपपपप A stupid man is bewildered when he


पपपपप पपपपपपपपपप पपपपपपप hears the real truth, while even a clever
पपपप पपपप पपपपपप- man is humbled by it just like the fool.
पपपप पपपपप पपपपपपपपप- पपप ॥32प

पपपपपपपप पपपपपप पप The ignorant make a great effort to


पपपपपपपपपपपपप पपपपप practice one-pointedness and the
पपपपप पपपपपप प पपपपपपपप stopping of thought, while the wise see
पपपपपपपपपपपपपप पपपपपपपपपप- nothing to be done and remain in
पपप themselves like those asleep. ॥33प

पपपपपपपपपपप पपपपपपपपपप पप The stupid does not attain cessation


पपपप पपपपपपपप पपपपपपपपपप whether he acts or abandons action,
पपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपप while the wise man find peace within
पपपपपपपप पपपप पपपपपपपपपपप- पपप simply by knowing the truth. ॥34प

पपपपपप पपपपपप पपपपपप पपपपपप People cannot come to know themselves


पपपपपपपपपपप पपपपपपपप by practices - pure awareness, clear,
पपपपपपप पप प पपपपपपप complete, beyond multiplicity and
पपपपपपप पपपपपप Eighteenth Chapter

पपपपपपपपपपपपप पपपपपपप- पपप faultless though they are. ॥35प

पपपपपपपप पपपपपप पपपपपप


The stupid does not achieve liberation
पपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपप
even through regular practice, but the
पपपपप पपपपपपपपपपपपपप
fortunate remains free and actionless
पपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपप-
पपप simply by discrimination. ॥36प

पपपप पपपपपपपप पपप पपपपपप The stupid does not attain Godhead
पपप पपपपपपपपपपपपप because he wants to become it, while the
पपपपपपपपपपप पपपप पप wise man enjoys the Supreme Godhead
पपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपप- पपप without even wanting it. ॥37प

Even when living without any support


पपपपपपपप पपपपपपपपपपप
and eager for achievement, the stupid are
पपपपप पपपपपपपपपपपप
still nourishing samsara, while the wise
पपपपपपपपपपपपपपपप
have cut at the very root of its
पपपपपपपपप पपपप पपपपपपपप- पपप
unhappiness. ॥38प

प पपपपपपप पपपप पपपप The stupid does not find peace because
पपप पपपपपपपपपपपपप he is wanting it, while the wise
पपपपपपपपपपपप पपपपपपपपपपप discriminating the truth is always
पपपपपप पपपपपपपपपपपपप- पपप peaceful minded. ॥39प

पपपपपपपपप पपपपपप पपपप


How can there be self knowledge for him
पपप पपपपपपपपपपपपप
whose knowledge depends on what he
पपपपपपपप पप प पपपपपपपप
sees. The wise do not see this and that,
पपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपप-
पपप but see themselves as unending. ॥40प

पपप पपपपपप पपपपपपपप How can there be cessation of thought for


पप पपपपपपपपप पपपपप पपप the misguided who is striving for it. Yet it
पपपपपपपपपपपप पपपपपप is there always naturally for the wise man
पपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपप- पपप delighted in self. ॥41प

पपपपपप पपपपप पपपपपपप Some think that something exists, and


प पपपपपपप पपपपपपपपप others that nothing does. Rare is the man
पपपपपपपपप पपपपपपप who does not think either, and is thereby
पपपपप पपपपपपपपपपप- पपप free from distraction. ॥42प

पपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपप Those of weak intelligence think of


पपपपपपपप पपपपपपपपपप themselves as pure non-duality, but
प पप पपपपपपप पपपपपप- because of their delusion do not know
पपपपपपप पपपपपप Eighteenth Chapter

पपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपप- पपप this, and remain unfulfilled all their lives.

पपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपप- The mind of the man seeking liberation


पपपपपपप प पपपपपपपप can find no resting place within, but the
पपपपपपपपप पपपपपपपप mind of the liberated man is always free
पपपपपपपपपपपपपपपप पपपपपपपपप- from desire by the very fact of being
पपप without a resting place. ॥44प

पपपपपपपपपपपप पपपपपपप Seeing the tigers of the senses, the


पपपपपप पपपपपपपपपपप frightened refuge-seekers at once enter
पपपपपपप पपपपप पपपपपप the cave in search of cessation of thought
पपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपप- पपप and one-pointedness. ॥45प

पपपपपपपपप पपपप पपपपपपपप


Seeing the desireless lion the elephants
पपपपपपप पपपपपपपपपपपप
of the senses silently run away, or, if they
पपपपपपपप प पपपपपपपपप
पपपपपपप पपपपपपपपपपप- पपप cannot, serve him like courtiers. ॥46प

पपपपपपपप पपपपपपपपपपप whose mind is free does not bother about
पपपपपप पपपपपपप पपपपपपप means of liberation. Whether seeing,
पपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपप hearing, feeling smelling or tasting, he
पपपपपपपपपपप- पपप lives at ease. ॥47प

He whose mind is pure and undistracted


पपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपप
from the simple hearing of the Truth sees
पपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपप
neither something to do nor something
पपपपपपपपपपपपप-
to avoid nor a cause for indifference.
पपपपपपपप पप पपपपपपपपपपपप- पपप

पपप पपपपपपपपपपपपपप The straightforward person does


पपप पपपपपपपपप पपपपप whatever arrives to be done, good or bad,
पपपप पपपपपपपपप पपपप for his actions are like those of a child.

By inner freedom one attains happiness,
पपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपप पपपप
by inner freedom one reaches the

Supreme, by inner freedom one comes to
पपपपपपप-
absence of thought, by inner freedom to
पपपपपपपपपपपपपप पपपप पपपपपपप-
पपप the Ultimate State. ॥50प

पपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपप When one sees oneself as neither the


पपपपपपपपप पपपपपप पपपप doer nor the reaper of the consequences,
पपप पपपपपप पपपपपपपपप then all mind waves come to an end.

The spontaneous unassumed behaviour
पपपपपपपपपपपपपप पपपपपप
of the wise is noteworthy, but not the
प पप पपपपपपपपपपपपपप
deliberate, intentional stillness of the
पपपपपपपपपपपपपप पपपपपपपपपपप-
पपप fool. ॥52प

The wise who are rid of imagination,


पपपपपपपप पपपपपपप- unbound and with unfettered awareness
पपपपपपपपप पपपपपपपपपपपपप
may enjoy themselves in the midst of
पपपपपपपपपपपप पपपप
many goods, or alternatively go off to
पपपपपप पपपपपपपपपपपपपपप- पपप
mountain caves. ॥53प

There is no attachment in the heart of a


पपपपपपपपपप पपपपपप पपपपपप- wise man whether he sees or pays
पपपपपप पपपपपप पपपपपपप
homage to a learned brahmin, a celestial
पपपपपपपप पपपपपपप पपपपपप
being, a holy place, a woman, a king or a
प पपपप पपपप पपपपपपपप- पपप
friend. ॥54प

पपपपपपप पपपपपपप पपपपपपपपप A yogi is not in the least put out even
पपपपपपपपपपपपपप पपपपपपपपप when humiliated by the ridicule of
पपपपपप पपपपपपपप पपपप servants, sons, wives, grandchildren or
प पपपप पपपपपपप पपपपपपपप- पपप other relatives. ॥55प

पपपपपपपपपपपप प पपपपपपपपप Even when pleased he is not pleased, not


पपपपपपपपप प प पपपपपपपप suffering even when in pain. Only those
पपपपपपपपपपपपपपप पपप like him can know the wonderful state of
पपपपपप पप पपपपपपपप- पपप such a man. ॥56प

पपपपपपपपपप पपपपपप प It is the sense of responsibility which is


पपप पपपपपपपप पपपपपप samsara. The wise who are of the form of
पपपपपपपपपप पपपपपपपप emptiness, formless, unchanging and
पपपपपपपपपप पपपपपपपपपपप- पपप spotless see no such thing. ॥57प

पपपपपपपपपपप पपपपपपपपपप Even when doing nothing the fool is


पपपपपपप पपपपपपप पपपपपपप agitated by restlessness, while a skillful
पपपपपपपपपप पप पपपपपपपप man remains undisturbed even when
पपपपप पप पपपपपपपपपपप- पपप doing what there is to do. ॥58प
पपपपपपप पपपपपप Eighteenth Chapter

पपपपपपपपप पपपप पपपप Happy he stands, happy he sits, happy


पपपपपपपपप पपपप पप sleeps and happy he comes and goes.
पपपप पपपपप पपपप पपपपपपप Happy he speaks, and happy he eats.
पपपपपपपपपपप पपपपपपपपपपप- पपप Such is the life of a man at peace. ॥59प

पपपपपपपपपपपपप पपपपपपपप- He who by his very nature feels no


पपपपपपपप पपपपपपपपपपप unhappiness in his daily life like worldly
पपपपपप पपपपपपपपपपप people, remains undisturbed like a great
पपपपपपपप प पपपपपपपप- पपप lake, all sorrow gone. ॥60प

पपपपपपपपपपप पपपपपप Even abstention from action leads to


पपपपपपपपप पपपपपपपपप action in a fool, while even the action of
पपपपपपपपपपपप पपपपपप the wise man brings the fruits of inaction.
पपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपप- पपप ॥61प

A fool often shows aversion towards his


पपपपपपपपपप पपपपपपपप
belongings, but for him whose
पपपपपप पपपपपप पपपपपपपप
attachment to the body has dropped
पपपप पपपपपपपपपपप
away, there is neither attachment nor
पपप पपपप पपप पपपपपपपपपप- पपप
aversion. ॥62प

पपपपपपपपपपपपपपप The mind of the fool is always caught in


पपपपपपपपपपपपपप पपपपपपप an opinion about becoming or avoiding
पपपपपपपपपपप पप पप something, but the wise man's nature is
पपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपप- to have no opinions about becoming and
पपप avoiding. ॥63प

पपपपपपपपपपप पपपपपपपप For the seer who behaves like a child,


पपपपपपपप पपपपपप पपपपपप without desire in all actions, there is no
प पपपपपपपपप पपपपपपपप attachment for such a pure one even in
पपपपपपपपपपपप पपपपपपपपप- पपप the work he does. ॥64प

प पप पपपप पपपपपपपप Blessed is he who knows himself and is


पपपपपपपपपप पप पपपप the same in all states, with a mind free
पपपपपप पपपपपपप पपपपपपप from craving whether he is seeing,
पपपपपपपपप hearing, feeling, smelling or tasting.
पपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपप- पपप ॥65प

There is no man subject to samsara,


पपप पपपपपप पपप पपपपपप
sense of individuality, goal or means to
पपप पपपपपप पपप प पपपपपप
the goal for the wise man who is always
पपपपपपपपप पपपपपप
free from imaginations, and unchanging
पपपपपपपपपपपपप पपपपपपपपप- पपप
as space. ॥66प
पपपपपपप पपपपपप Eighteenth Chapter

Glorious is he who has abandoned all


प पपपपपपपपपपपपपपपप
goals and is the incarnation of
पपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपप
satisfaction, his very nature, and whose
पपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपप
inner focus on the Unconditioned is quite
पपपपपपपपपपप पपपपपपपपप- पपप
spontaneous. ॥67प

In brief, the great-souled man who has


पपपपपपपप पपपपपपपपप
come to know the Truth is without desire
पपपपपपपपपपपप पपपपपपप
for either pleasure or liberation, and is
पपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपप
always and everywhere free from
पपप पपपपपपप पपपपपपपप- पपप
attachment. ॥68प

What remains to be done by the man who


पपपपपप पपपपपपपपपप
is pure awareness and has abandoned
पपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपप
everything that can be expressed in
पपपपप पपपपपपपपपपप
words from the highest heaven to the
पपप पपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपप- पपप
earth itself?प69प

पपपपपपपपपपप पपपपप The pure man who has experienced the


पपपपपपपपपपपपपपप पपपपपपपप Indescribable attains peace by his own
पपपपपपपपपपपपपप पपपपपप nature, realizing that all this is nothing
पपपपपपपपपप पपपपपपपपपप- पपप but illusion, and that nothing is. ॥70प

पपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपप
There are no rules, dispassion,
पपपपपपपपपपपपपपपप
renunciation or meditation for one who
पपप पपपपप पपप पपपपपपपप
is pure receptivity by nature, and admits
पपप पपपपपप पपप पपपपपप पपपपप-
no knowable form of being?प71प
पपप

पपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपप For him who shines with the radiance of


पपपपपपपप प प पपपपपपप Infinity and is not subject to natural
पपप पपपपप पपप प पप पपपपपप causality there is neither bondage,
पपप पपपपप पपप पपपपपपपपपपप- पपप liberation, pleasure nor pain. ॥72प

Pure illusion reigns in samsara which will


पपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपप continue until self realisation, but the
पपपपपपपपपप पपपपपपपपप enlightened man lives in the beauty of
पपपपपपप पपपपपपपपप freedom from me and mine, from the
पपपपपपपप पपपपप पपपपपपप- पपप sense of responsibility and from any
attachment. प73प

पपपपपप पपपपपपपप- For the seer who knows himself as


पपपपपपपप पपपपपप पपपपपप imperishable and beyond pain there is
पपपपपपप पपपपपप Eighteenth Chapter

पपप पपपपपप प पपप पप पपपपपप neither knowledge, a world nor the sense
पपप पपपपपपप पपपपप पपपपप- पपप that I am the body or the body mine.

पपपपपपपपपप पपपपपपप
No sooner does a man of low intelligence
पपपपप पपपपपपपपपप
give up activities like the elimination of
पपपपपपपप पपपपपपपपपपप
thought than he falls into mental chariot
पपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपप-
पपप racing and babble. ॥75प

A fool does not get rid of his stupidity


पपपपप पपपपपपपपपप पपपपपपपप
even on hearing the truth. He may appear
प पपपपप पपपपपपपपप
outwardly free from imaginations, but
पपपपपपपपपपप पपपपपपपपपपप-
inside he is hankering after the senses
पपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपप- पपप
still. ॥76प

पपपपपपपप पपपपपपपपप Though in the eyes of the world he is


पप पपपपपपपपपपपपप पपपपपपपपप active, the man who has shed action
पपपपपपपपपपपपप पपपपप through knowledge finds no means of
पपपपपपपप प पपपपपपपप- पपप doing or speaking anything. ॥77प

पपप पपप पपप पपपपपपप पप For the wise man who is always
पपपप पपप प प पपपपपप unchanging and fearless there is neither
पपपपपपपपपपपप पपपपपप darkness nor light nor destruction, nor
पपपपपपपपपप पपपपपपपपप- पपप anything. ॥78प

पपप पपपपपप पपप पपपपपपपपपप There is neither fortitude, prudence nor


पपप पपपपपपपपपपप पपप courage for the yogi whose nature is
पपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपप beyond description and free of
पपपपपपपपपपपप पपपपपपपपप- पपप individuality. ॥79प

प पपपपपपप पपप पपपप There is neither heaven nor hell nor even
पपपपपपपपपपपपपप पपप पपप liberation during life. In a nutshell, in the
पपपपपपपप पपपपपपपपप sight of the seer nothing exists at all.
पपपपपपपपपपप प पपपपपपपप- पपप ॥80प

पपप पपपपपपपपपप पपपप He neither longs for possessions nor


पपपपपपपपपपपपपपपप grieves at their absence. The calm mind
पपपपपप पपपपप पपपपपप- of the sage is full of the nectar of
पपपपपपप पपपपपपपपपप- पपप immortality. ॥81प

प पपपपपप पपपपपप पपपपपपपप The dispassionate does not praise the


प पपपपपपपप पपपपपपपप good or blame the wicked. Content and
पपपपपपप पपपपपप Eighteenth Chapter

पपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपप पपपपपपप equal in pain and pleasure, he sees


पपपपपप प पपपपपपपपप- पपप nothing that needs doing. ॥82प

पपपप प पपपपपपपप पपपपपपप- The wise man does not dislike samsara
पपपपपप प पपपपपपपपपप or seek to know himself. Free from
पपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपप प pleasure and impatience, he is not dead
पपपप प प पपपपपपपप- पपप and he is not alive. ॥83प

The wise man stands out by being free


पपपपपपपपप पपपपपपपपपपप
from anticipation, without attachment to
पपपपपपपप पपपपपपप पप
such things as children or wives, free
पपपपपपपपपप पपपपपपपपपपप
from desire for the senses, and not even
पपपपपप पपपपप पपपपपपप- पपप
concerned about his own body. ॥84प

Peace is everywhere for the wise man


पपपपपपप पपपपपपप पपपपपप
who lives on whatever happens to come
पपपपपपपपपपपपपपप
to him, going to wherever he feels like,
पपपपपपपपपप पपपप पपपपपप
and sleeping wherever the sun happens
पपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपप- पपप
to set. ॥85प

पपपपपपपप पप पपपप पपपपप Let his body rise or fall. The great souled
पपपपपप पपपपपपपपप one gives it no thought, having forgotten
पपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपप- all about samsara in coming to rest on
पपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपप- पपप the ground of his true nature. ॥86प

The wise man has the joy of being


पपपपपपप पपपपपपप complete in himself and without
पपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपप possessions, acting as he pleases, free
पपपपपप पपपपपपपपपप from duality and rid of doubts, and
पपपपप पपपप पपपपपपप- पपप without attachment to any creature.

The wise man excels in being without the


पपपपपपप पपपपप पपपप
sense of 'me'. Earth, a stone or gold are
पपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपप
the same to him. The knots of his heart
पपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपप-
have been rent asunder, and he is freed
पपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपप- पपप
from greed and blindness. ॥88प

पपपपपपपपपपपपपपपप प Who can compare with that contented,


पपपपपपप पपपपप पपपपप liberated soul who pays no regard to
पपपपपपपपपपप पपपपपपपपपप anything and has no desire left in his
पपपपप पपप पपपपपपपप- पपप heart?प89प
पपपपपपप पपपपपप Eighteenth Chapter

पपपपपपपप प पपपपपप Who but the upright man without desire


पपपपपपपपप प पपपपपपप knows without knowing, sees without
पपपपपपपपप पपप प प पपपपपप seeing and speaks without
पपपपपपप पपपपपपपपपपपपपपपप- पपप speaking?प90प

पपपपपपपपपप पपपपपपपपपपप पप
Beggar or king, he excels who is without
पपपपपपपप प पपपपपप
desire, and whose opinion of things is rid
पपपपपप पपपपप पपपप
पपपपपपपपपप पपपपपपप- पपप of 'good' and 'bad'. ॥91प

There is neither dissolute behaviour nor


पपप पपपपपपपपपपपपप पपप पपपपपप
virtue, nor even discrimination of the
पपप पप पपपपपपपपपपपपपपपप
truth for the sage who has reached the
पपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपप
goal and is the very embodiment of
पपपपपपपपपपप पपपपपपपपप- पपप
guileless sincerity. ॥92प

पपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपप How can one describe what is


पपपपपपप पपपपपपपपपप experienced within by one desireless and
पपपपपपपपपपपपपपप पपप free from pain, and content to rest in
पपप पपपप पपपपपपपपप- पपप himself - and of whom?प93प

पपपपपपपपप प पपपपपपपप प The wise man who is contented in all


पपपपपपपपपप पपपपप प पप circumstances is not asleep even in deep
पपपपपपपप प पपपपपपप sleep, not sleeping in a dream, nor
पपपपपपपपपपप पपप पपपपपप- पपप waking when he is awake. ॥94प

The seer is without thoughts even when


पपपप पपपपपपपपपप पपपपपपपपपप
thinking, without senses among the
पपपपपपपपपपपपप पपपपपपपपपपपपप
senses, without understanding even in
पपपपपपपपपपप पपपपपपपपपपप
understanding and without a sense of
पपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपप- पपप
responsibility even in the ego. ॥95प

A man with tranquil mind is neither


प पपपप प प पप पपपपप
happy nor unhappy, neither detached nor
प पपपपपपप प पपपपपपपप
attached. He is neither seeking liberation
प पपपपपपपपपपप पप पपपपपप
nor liberated. He is nothing of these,
प पपपपपपपपपप प पपपपपपपप- पपप
nothing of these. ॥96प

पपपपपपपपपपप प पपपपपपपपपप A man with tranquil mind does not get


पपपपप प पपपपपपपपपप distracted by disturbances, in meditation
पपपपपपपपप प पपप पपपपप he does not meditate. A blessed man
पपपपपपपपपपपपप प पपपपपपपपपप- neither gains stupidity by his worldly
पपप acts, nor does he gets wisdom. ॥97प

A man with tranquil mind remains


पपपपपप पपपपपपपपपपपपपपपप established in his self. Being without any
पपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपप duty, he is at peace. He is always the
पपप पपपपपपप पपपपपपपपपपपपप same.As he is without greed, he does not
पपपपपपपपपपप पपपपपपपप- पपप recall what he has done or not done.

He is neither pleased when praised nor

gets upset when blamed. He is neither

A man at peace does not run off to

popular resorts or to the forest.

Wherever, he remains in whatever
पपपपपप पपपपपपपप
condition he exists with a tranquil mind.

In unchanging me, there is no fateful actions

Without a nature, there is no doer or reaper

of actions, no inaction or action, nothing

Established as non-dual reality, there is no

world or desire for liberation, no yogi or seer,

no-one bound or liberated. ॥6प

There is no knower or evidence, nothing

knowable or knowledge, nothing less or non-

There is no Maya or world, no attachment or

For me who is forever unmovable and

indivisible, established in Self, there is no

tendency or renunciation, no liberation or
पपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपप
पपपपपपपपप पप पपपपपपपपप- पपप bondage. ॥12प

There is no sermon or scripture, no disciple
पपप पपपपपप पपप प पप पपपपपप
or guru, nothing is to be achieved for ever
पपप पपपपपप पपपपपपपपपप पप
पपपपपपपपप पपपपपप पपपपप- पपप blissful and non-special Self. ॥13प

पपपपपपपप पपपप पपप प पपपपपप There is no existence or non-existence, no
पपपपपपपप पपपपपपपपप non-duality or duality. What more is there to
पपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपपप पपपपप- say? Nothing arises out of me. ॥14प
