Comm4557 Spring 2019 Online Assignment 1

Dr. Axel Westerwick

Online Assignment 1

For the Online Assignments, you are asked to always explain your answers in a few
sentences (provide or mark the correct answer and explain it). For your explanations,
you can use the book or other good quality sources. However, do not just copy and
paste from sources. Instead, use your own words and cite the used sources at the end
of your paper.
If you are asked to make some drawings, you can use appropriate tools in MS Word or
other applications. You could also provide handwritten answers or drawings by hand
and scan your document as PDF. Just keep in mind that your assignments need to be
readable for others. Deadlines: 10:00 p.m. for the paper, 11:59 p.m. for the comment
(see general instructions on Carmen).

1. Draw the following waveform in the frequency domain (assume the amplitude
doesn’t change):

2. Please read the following statement and select the best answer:

One reason that  electromagnetic waves are better than acoustic waves for
telecommunication applications is that  electromagnetic waves require a
medium to propagate.

a. Only part  of the statement is true

b. Only part  of the statement is true
c. https://otadtv.comBoth parts are wrong
Electromagnetic waves do not require a medium to propagate.
3. The higher the frequency of an electromagnetic wave, the higher its perceived pitch
a. True

b. False
The frequency of an electromagnetic wave has nothing to do with the pitch. The higher
frequency of an sound wave, the higher its perceived pitch.
4. Over-the-air analog television signals are broadcast in the VHF range because they
cannot be modulated to another range of the spectrum
a. True
b. False
Most analog stations changed their RF channel for the DTv transition, and most VHF
stations moved to UHF
5. What kind of filter would you use to produce a signal that looks like the dashed line
from the rectified signal represented by the solid line?

a. A low-pass filter
b. A high-pass filter
c. A band-pass filter
d. A band-stop filter
Low-pass filter eliminates (much higher) carrier frequency, leaves only original
modulating signal

6. Explain in which way each of the four different types of filters (low-pass, high-pass,
band-pass, band-stop) change an incoming signal? What do you need to know to
choose the right filter for your application?

The Low Pass Filter – the low pass filter only allows low frequency signals to pass
through
The High Pass Filter – the high pass filter only allows high frequency signals to pass
through
The Band Pass Filter – the band pass filter allows signals falling within a certain
frequency band setup between two points to pass through
The Band Stop Filter- blocks and rejects frequencies that lie between its two cut-off
frequency points passes all those frequencies either side of this range

Frequency of modulated signal.

After answering all questions above and posting your paper on the Carmen discussion,
you are asked to read a paper of another student. Reading another paper should help
you to reflect on your own answers by determining if the answers in both papers are

correct, if you made a mistake, or if you think that the other paper includes some
mistakes. To prove that you have read the other paper, you need to post a comment
on that paper. Explain in a few sentences if the other paper helped you to find
mistakes in your own paper. If you think the other student made some mistakes,
explain the correct answers.
