Planning a Book Trailer

1. Identify the audience for your book trailer. Who are you designing this for? If you
are a teacher or media specialist, describe a group of your learners below. If you do not
work in a K-12 setting, send me an email and we can decide who your audience will be.

Learner Analysis:

a. Age/Gender: 10-11 Male and Female 6th graders

b. Cultural Background:

c. Educational Level: 6th Grade

d. Special Needs/Accommodations:

e. Specific Entry Skills:

e. Motivation – Keller’s ARCS Model (Describe how you will integrate each component
into your book trailer to get your audience’s attention.)
· Attention –
· Relevance – Use
· Confidence –
· Satisfaction –

For the book trailer activity, the book I selected is entitled “The Outsiders.’’ My target
audience for this book a group of 6th grade students who receive special education
services. In the direct setting, there are 13 students total that is split between two
classes. In the first direct setting there are 8 students. All students are African-American.
There are 5 males and 3 females. All these students receive a small group
accommodation for Language Arts as they all have a specific learning disability as
outlined in their respective IEPs. In the other small group, there are 5 students. 1 student
is a Hispanic female and 1 student is an African American female. 2 students are
African-American males and the other student is a Caucasian male. Similar to the other
small group, these students receive a small group accommodation as they have a
specific learning disability as outlined in their IEPs. All students have computer literacy
skills and are able to watch and follow along with instructional videos.
The students struggle with reading in some capacity and it is vital to accommodate their
needs in order for them to successfully demonstrate understanding of the book. It is also
important to keep my students fully engaged throughout this book study. My hope is
that the book trailer will create an anticipation to read the book and motivate the students
to jump into the book. The ARCS model will be integrated into the book trailer as follows:

A-Attention
I plan to grab the students attention by incorporating theme music that closely relates to
the music that my students listen to. My students enjoy pop and hip hop music, so i will
find an appropriate instrumental to use as background music.

R-Relevance
I will stay relevant by using pictures for characters that they can recognize. I will try to
use celebrities such as athletes, actors, and musicians that would relate to the
characters of the story.

C-Confidence
I will use culturally relevant themes as well as language in this trailer that will help my
students gain a better understanding of what the book will be about. This will create a
discussion piece as we will talk about themes that we will be looking out for in the story.
The more context they gather before reading the story, the more they will be able to
recognize certain items as we read the book.

S-Satisfaction
I plan on making this trailer entertaining and when students are entertained they are
satisfied. Reading is not these students’ favorite subject, so incorporating a fun activity
before reading, will take some of the pressure off of them and want to read the book and
do well on assignments.
