FRANKFURT AM.VORWORT
Die Suite — cine Folge von
Tanzen — ist die alteste Form fir
agrossere, zusammenhingende Werke
der Instrumentalmusik Aus ihr ent-
wickelte sich nach und nach die
Sonate und die Symphonie. Die vor-
liegenden frinzdsischen und engl
schen Suiten sind niche wesentlich
voneinander verschieden; die engl
schen sind ecwas teicher, brillanter,
lund jeder von ihnen geht noch ein
Praludium voraus. Uber die Her.
kunfe der Namen "franzosische",
englische” weiss man nichts Be:
stimmies. Sie dirfien aus der Leip-
ziger Zeit Bachs stammen (1722)
und tragen, wie alle Werke Bachs,
weder Tempo- noch irgend welche
Vortragsvorschrifien von ihm selbst;
also_keine Fortes, keine Pianos,
keine Phrasierungen. Der Herausge-
ber hat sich bemihe, das Bachsche
Norenbild nach Moglichkeit 20 et-
halten; zur Erkenntniss des organi-
schen Baues benutzt der Herausgeber
das Zeichen |; es bedeutet_meist
einen thematischen Eincritt in einer
Stimme und entspricht einem Atem-
2eichen, und an Stelle vieler Bezeich-
rnungen’ empfiehlt er dem Spieler:
Gesundheit, Klarheit und Einfach-
heit in Ton und Vora, sorgfiltige
Pheasierung; dieses schliesst Phanta-
sie, Empfindung und Leben niche
aus — je linger man die Suiten
kennt, um so mehr bewundert man
die Verschiedenartigkeit des Aus-
drucks und das tiefe Empfinden, das
Bach in diesen einfachen Sticke
offenbart hat.

ist uns folgende Ausfihrung der Ver.

AVANT-PROPOS
La Suite — une succession de
danses — est la forme la plus an-
cienne qui existe pour les ceuvres
instrumentales d'une certaine enver-
gure ayant un caractére d'unité. Par-
fant ici, Mvolution créa peu a peu
de organisation musicale I'éditeur
se sert du signe !; il indique le plus
souvent entrée ‘thématique d'une
partie et elle correspond a un hiatus,
nous préférons recommander 3 l'exé-
ccutant un ton et un jeu sains, clairs
ex simples; cela ne veut pas dire
quill faille exclure imagination, Je
sentiment et la vie ~ plus on étudie
plus on en vient a admi-
esse et la profondeur senti-
mentale que Bach révéle dans ces
pieces si simples’

suivante de rendre les agréments,
suivant les explications de Philippe
Emanuel, un des fils de Bach:
PREFACE
The suite, a succession of dan-
ces, is the oldest existing form of
larger instrumental works having a
certain unity of style. From this the
Sonata and Symphony were gradu-
ally evolved. There is no essential
difference between the French and
English suites which follow here.
‘The English are somewhat richer
and more brilliant in texture and each
is preceded by a prelude. Nothing
definite is known about the origins
Of the headings “French” or "Eng-
lish”. The suites were probably com-
posed during Bach's Leipzig period
(0722), and, just as in his other
works, Bach gave no direction as
to interpretation, there are neither
fortes”, "pianos”, or any indication
as to phrasing. The Editor has made
every effort (0 keep as close as pos-
sible to Bach's intentions. To make
the recognition of the organic struc-
ture clear, the Editor uses the sign
"1", which usually indicates the en-
trance of the theme in one of the
parts and is equivalent co a breathing-
pause. Instead of overloading the
ext with other sigas, he suggests
that the performer. should concen-
trate on clear, simple, vigorous tone
and delivery, as well as careful
phrasing, which by no meams exclu-
des imagination, sensibility, and
spontaneity. The’ longer one studies
the suites, the more one admires
the richness and depth of feeling
revealed by Bach in these simple
pieces.
From Bach’s son Philipp Emanuel
we have the following explanation
for the performance of the various
