Introduction
Physical education is an educational course related to maintaining the human body
through physical exercise. It enhances body health, quality of life and sense of
wellbeing.

This SBA focuses on an intramural basketball competition hosted by the senior students
of Edward P. Yorke High School. Only second form males participated in this intramural
event on campus. The basketball competition will be made up of ten games, two play-
off matches and a final game to determine the winner.

The candidate chose the role as an acting First-Aid Officer. Being a first aid officer aids
with my aspiration of being an anesthetist. It will help me to explore the basic biological
concepts. My role includes the maintenance of a first aid kit, the application of first aid
and the raising of awareness on how to care for and prevent sports injuries. Also,
making reports of accidents which include causes, injuries and suggested actions for
future preventions. In the demonstration of this role, I also have the tasks of aiding
relevant personnel in coming up with appropriate procedures in the event of injuries,
identifying possible hazards and reporting this information to the Competition Manager.

1

 Liaising with relevant personnel to devise appropriate procedures
in event of serious injuries.
 Collecting and distributing information related to care and
prevention of sport injuries.
 Writing up reports of accidents, detailing cause, injuries and
suggested action for future prevention.
 Identifying possible hazards or causes of injuries and reporting
them to the competition manager.
 To supply players with adequate water

Tournament Rules
Basketball is a team sport. Two teams of five players each try to score by shooting a
ball through a hoop elevated 10 feet above the ground. The game is played on a
rectangular floor called the court, and there is a hoop at each end. The court is divided
into two main sections by the mid-court line.
The main objective of a basketball game is to score points by means of shooting a ball
through a hoop. The basket for a team is in the opponent’s court. Each team should not
only try to score points but prevent the opposite team from taking control of the ball, and
should also try to protect the basket in their court and prevent the opponent from
scoring.
There were only thirteen rules of "basketball":

1. The ball may be thrown in any direction with one or both hands.
2. The ball may be batted in any direction with one or both hands.
3. A player cannot run with the ball, the player must throw it from the spot on which
he catches it, allowance to be made for a man who catches the ball when
running at good speed.
4. The ball must be held in or between the hands, the arms or body must not be
used for holding it.
5. No shouldering, holding, pushing, tripping or striking in any way the person of an
opponent shall be allowed. The first infringement of this rule by any person shall
count as a foul; the second shall disqualify him until the next goal is made, or if
there was evident intent to injure the person, for the whole of the game, no
substitute.
6. A foul is striking the ball with the fist, violation of rules 3 and 4, and such as
described in rule 5.
7. If either side makes three consecutive fouls it shall count a goal for opponents.
8. A goal shall be made when the ball is thrown or batted from grounds into the
basket and stays there. If the ball rests on the edge and the opponent moves the
basket it shall count as a goal.
9. When the ball goes out of bounds it shall be thrown into the field and played by
the person first touching it. In case of a dispute, the umpire shall throw it straight
into the field. The "thrower-in" is allowed five seconds. If he holds it longer it shall
go to the opponent. If any side persists in delaying the game, the umpire shall
call a foul on them.
10. The umpire shall be the judge of the men and shall note the fouls, and notify the
referee when three consecutive fouls have been made.
11. The referee shall be the judge of the ball and shall decide when the ball is in
play, in-bounds, and to which side it belongs, and shall keep the time. He shall
decide when a goal has been made and keep account of the goals with any
other duties that are usually performed by a referee. 3
12. The time shall be fifteen-minute halves, with five-minute rests between.
13. The side making the most goals in that time shall be declared the winner. In the
case of a draw, the game may, by agreement of the captains, be continued until
another goal is made.

Revised Rules

Rule # 2 also states that the ball can never be batted with the fist. Also a violation in
today’s game
Rule #4: The ball must be held in or between the hands. The arms or body must
not be used for holding it.

That rule no longer applies today.

#5, if a player commits a second foul, he is disqualified -- and no substitute may be

entered in his place -- until the next goal is scored. Not unlike a penalty in ice hockey
today.
Rule #7: If either side makes three consecutive fouls, it shall count as a goal for
the opponents.

Today, we have no such rule, so this one did not stand the test of time.

Rule #9 goes on to say that the thrower is allowed five seconds (to release the ball on a
pass)

Edward P. Yorke Intramural Competition will be governed by the FIBA rules.

Elimination round: Each team will play 4 games. The team due for
elimination will be the team that has lost the most games. However, if more
than one team has the same amount of games lost, the team with the least
accumulated points will be eliminated. If there is still a tie, the team with the
most fouls is to be eliminated. But if there is a tie in the number fouls, then
we must have a tie breaking game.

Reflection

The intramural competition was very successful and it was a great learning experience
for the candidate as he achieved his objective of helping people and enjoying the game
at the same time. As a First-Aid Officer it was interesting to learn about the different
sport injuries and how applying first-aid can prevent further damages to the human
body.
The candidate built his communication skills whilst working with his peers. The
candidate also was able to obtain all the necessary information needed to complete this
SBA.
The candidate appreciated the opportunity of planning and being a part of a sports
tournament as he also loves and play the sport. He was able to build his leadership
skills. Despite it being a struggle to get the injured player to the fist aid tent.
After completion of the tournament, the only recommendations would be for the
tournament to be more organized to prevent the games from going longer than planned.
