TECHNICAL MANUAL

1 INTRODUCTION
This technical manual is dealing with the technical aspect of STRANGKOFARM Control
Windows. This means mounting, start up and adjustment of the system, and a spare parts list for
service on the system. How to use the system is not described here, but in the user’s manual for
STRANGKOFARM Control Windows.

2 MOUNTING
Feeding stations, door antenna and acto - antenna are to be mounted according to the drawings
made by STRANGKO.
Cables for barn electronics, calf drinking automates, Milk-Meter interface, identification in the
milking parlour and acto-antenna are made according to the el-diagrams in this manual.
PLEASE NOTE! All 230 Volt installations must be made by an authorized electrician.

If the system contains Milk-Meter or Actometer the MM II interface and/or the ID-unit (DHK)
and/or the acto-unit are to be programmed, before using the system.
After inserting cow and transponder numbers, feed and milk data, the antennas in the feeding
stations, door antennas and acto-antenna are to be adjusted.
2-3 days after starting up the system, the feeding stations must be calibrated to secure that the
correct quantity of feed is dispensed.

3 PREPARING THE PC WITH WINDOWS 3.X

This sections is only to be carried out by specialists, with knowledge of the use and
installation of Windows programmes.
If the PC is delivered by STRANGKO this section has already been carried out.
The FCC II control card is to communicate with the PC through an available COM-port and
available IRQ number.
The control card has the following possibilities for communication:
COM1, 2, 3, 4 and IRQ 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 9, 10, 11, 12, 14, 15.
As a standard we recommend using COM2, IRQ3.
If the set up of the PC is not known, you can check this by opening the programme called MSD.
This programme gives you detailed information about how the PC is configured.
Type the following after C:\ MSD <Enter>.
Under COM Ports you can see which COM Ports are available.
Under IRQ Status you can see which IRQ numbers are available.
In the DOS/Windows manual there is a detailed description of these settings.
Most PC are equipped with COM1 and COM2.
If the COM Port, which you wish to use, is available, the port is to be Disabled.
Depending on the type of computer the COM port is disabled with either a dip switch on the I/O-
Card or with software settings in the bios-set-up. In the manual for the PC it is described how to
do this.

PREPARING THE PC WITH WINDOWS 9X/ME

This section is only to be carried out by specialists, with knowledge of the use and
installation of Windows programmes.
As a standard we recommend using COM2, IRQ3
The FCC II CARD can be delivered as either internal or external versions and with different
size of RAM:
128kb
384kb
512kb
The external version can be delivered with serial connection or with usb connection.

In case of internal FCC card the PC must contain ISA bus, and the existing com2 port must be
disabled in the BIOS settings.
The control card is to be mounted in an empty ISA slot in the PC. (Please see the PC manual for
how to do this.)
Connect power (adapter) to the control card. When the power (adapter) is connected, the control
card will beep once to indicate that the power is connected and that the control card is working
OK. If the FCC II card beeps twice, the program might be lost on the card and it must be
reprogrammed. The card can loose its memory if it is kept in stock for a long time without power
connected. In this case the fcc card must be reprogrammed.

The FCC card will be seen as a new com2 port.

After disabling the com2 port in the

BIOS, remove the com port in
system properties and let windows
search for new hardware, remember
to install the fcc card prior to this
operation.

5 IN CASE OF USB CONNECTION:

Article number xxxxxxx, interface cable USB. This cable is usable for communication with
FCC-cards.

You can use this cable to communicate between software packages (working under Windows)
and for instance FCC- cards, can be achieved with this USB-cable. USB allows you to connect
multiple FCC-cards directly onto your PC (provided You have enough free USB-ports), or
indirectly by means of a so-called “HUB”.

Minimal system requirements:

PC with Windows 98 or better.
At least one free USB-port.

Installation

Put the installation disk into your disk drive and connect the USB-cable onto a free USB-port.
The window "add new hardware wizard" will appear. Chose the option "Search for a better
driver than the one your device is using now (recommended)" and press "next". The software
will be installed, when this is done correctly press "finish".

Check onto which COM-port the USB-cable is connected, by opening "system" in the control
panel. The option "ports (COM & LPT)" in the window "device manager" of system, allows you
to check the current COM-port of the USB-cable. The name of the USB-cable in the list is:
"IDENTO USB <-> TTL Port", the COM-port number is displayed at the end of this name. This
COM-port number must be the same as the port number used by the software you want to
communicate with.

If communication is not possible using the automatically chosen COM-port, the COM-port
can be adjusted manual. To do this, select the port to be changed from the above mentioned list
in "ports (COM & LPT)". By clicking on properties a new window will appear. Change to the
"port settings" tab and click on the "advanced" button. In this window you can change the port
number.

Known problems

If during programming or reading using the USB-cable also a so-called "streaming device" is
used, the communication can generate problems. Therefore never connect a streaming device
onto the same USS controller, but connect it directly onto the PC. So in this case never use a
common HUB.

AAS version 1.6

With the version 1.6 and lower, you

need some commands to be carried
out in the autoexec.bat file

The first command line is deleting

files in the c:\kmw\data\backup.tmp
directory in case they were not
deleted by the program.
The second command line is
synchronising the time.
The PC time will be adjusted
according to the time in the FCC
card.

20

TECHNICAL MANUAL

AAS version 1.71

In this version the time
synchronization can be done in the
AAS program in the option START.
Then you don’t need the command
in the autoexec.bat file.

In windows ME there are no

autoexec.bat file, so you need to add
the necessary commands in the
registry instead.

Under
HKEY local
machine\software\Microsoft\
windows\currentversion\run\
you can add the command for
resetting the backup.tmp directory.

21
STRANGKOFARM CONTROL II MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

TECHNICAL MANUAL

If the PC is running all the time

there can be a difference between
the time in the PC and the FCC card.
If the difference gets too big then
the feed reset will not start.

To solve this problem you can add

an event in the AAS program doing
the same thing as if the PC had been
shut off. The command will take
place 5 minutes before feed reset.

If the PC is running all the time then

the commands in autoexec.bat or in
the registry will never be carried
out.
There is a possibility to let AAS do
the job by entering this command as
event no. 5

8.3 Adjustment of Door Antenna Signal

The door antenna plates must be optimized one by one with both antenna plates connected.

The antenna signal is measured with an oscilloscope by making a loop

with the testing probe as shown on this drawing, and place it on the antenna plate.

The best position is where the cables are coming out of the antenna.

With the tuning jumpers you optimise the electrical field to an optimum.
Follow the flowchart on the next page.

The best result can be achieved if you use two testing probes at the same time.
One on each antenna plate.

Dismount the keyboard of the MM Interface and connect it to the ID-Unit (DHK).
Socket cables from the keyboard are inserted in the sockets on the print plate.
Or use the service keyboard shown here below

ENTER
Then choose the right row (1,2,3 or 4) by pushing .
A transponder number registered in the antenna area and can be seen on the display of the
service keyboard.
Move the transponder around in the antenna field.
The transponder is held as when the cow goes through the antenna.
If there are holes in the antenna field, the antennas might not be in "phase", and you will have to
switch the cable for one antenna plate in the socket.
If you switch the cables you must optimise the antennas again.
If necessary connect housing of RF- interface to shield

When the transponder is held in the middle of the antenna field, and turned in
vertical direction, the number will disappear at 90º, if the number appears again at
app. 85º when the transponder is turned back, the optimising is OK.
If the number appears again at a lower angle than app. 85º, you must optimise
again or check if there are other reasons for poor antenna signal.

Example: Interference of very strong telephone signal, pc monitor, or high

frequency fluorescent tubes.
