These are bold claims. The situation is more complex than the
quotations indicate because the introduction of computer
simulation methods is not a single innovation but is a
multifaceted development involving visualization, numerical
experimentation, computer‐assisted instrumentation,
individual‐based modeling, and other novelties. It would be
possible to hold different, less radical, views on these
developments. One view would be that the methods of
computational science are simply numerical methods that have
been greatly enhanced by fast digital computation devices
with large (p.52) memory capacity and that they introduce
nothing essentially new into science. A second view would
hold that these techniques do not constitute legitimate
science, in part because numerical experiments, being free of
direct empirical content, cannot substitute for real
experiments. A third objection would argue that because the
correctness of some of the computational processes
underlying theoretical computational science cannot be
conclusively verified, they fall short of the standards necessary
for scientific methods. These objections need to be addressed,
although ultimately they are based on a lack of appreciation
for the ways in which computational science differs from more
traditional methods.

We can see how this works for the case of Newton's Second
Law. Let us initially take the force function
and with the initial conditions y(t 0 = y 0, (dy/dt)|t 0 = 0 this
computational template is easily solved to give a general solution.
Supplemented by the appropriate values for M, m, y 0, and R, a
specific solution can be obtained. But the idealizations that
underlie this simple mathematical model make it quite unrealistic.
These idealizations assume, among other things, that the
gravitational force on the body does not vary with its distance from
the Earth's surface and that there is no air resistance on the falling
body. Suppose we make it a little more realistic by representing the
gravitational force as GMm/(R + y)2, where y is the distance of the
body from the Earth's surface, and by introducing a velocity‐
dependent drag force due to air resistance, which we take to be
proportional to the square of the body's velocity. We then obtain
from the original theoretical template the equation

where r 0 is the initial distance from the central force and v 0 is the
initial velocity.
These considerations suggest that although in some contexts,
laws are an appropriate focus of interest, they will not be the
primary object of investigation in the area of computational
science. It is preferable to (p.67) consider whatever ‘laws’
there are to be represented by the general equation forms
together with precisely specified constraints, and to take as
important the computational form of those equations rather
than their status as lawlike or not. As a bonus to the present
approach, in many of these applications a solution type can be
arrived at knowing only the general form of the supplementary
factors, be they initial and boundary conditions or parameter
values, and our main interest can thus be focused on the first
step down from the template. Although there are elements of

The templates are thus not mere conjectures but objects for
which a separate justification for each idealization,
approximation, and physical principle is often available, and
those justifications transfer to the use of the template.
Moreover, when there is a lack of fit between the predictions
of the template and the data, rather than simply abandoning
the former, explicit attention to the correction set is frequently
the best guide to adjusting and retaining the template. In
arriving at solvable equations, especially when using

(if you think the axioms are all true, you have to accept that
any consequence drawn from them is true, too), but in order to
preserve that kind of closure while not letting our realist
commitments run rampant, certain other closure conditions
that are often included as part of the background
mathematical apparatus have to be rejected. For example, it is
standardly assumed in most theories of mathematical physics
that all the derivatives of a function exist. But arbitrary
derivatives of a function, such as the (p.85) eighth derivative,
are usually physically meaningless. Most equations of physical
interest have an order no higher than second. (One exception
is the displacement of the end of an elastic bar rigidly fixed at
the other end, which is described by a fourth‐order ordinary
differential equation.)51 The same thing occurs with ordinary
arithmetical operations. What physical referent does the
square root of charge have, for example? We have here a
tension between the need for mathematical simplicity and the
commitment to physical content of the theory.52 The obvious
solution is to be explicit about which parts of the theory are to
be construed realistically and which merely instrumentally.
The theory itself is mute—we must speak on its behalf.

including (1)
the
development of concrete computational devices of sufficient power;
(2) the justification, and occasionally the development, of
approximation methods; (3) the construction of algorithms and
programs to implement (2); and (4) idealizations. We can represent
the stages in the construction and refinement of computational
models by figure 3.1. (To preserve clarity, links between an analytic
solution and a simulation based upon that solution have been
omitted.)

do not address here.

Then use the well‐known tic‐tac‐toe strategy and you can't lose
if you go first. I learned this example from Stephanie Guerlain
of the University of Virginia Systems Engineering Department.

claims about the defined status of certain concepts. See
Humphreys 1993b; and Cargile 1987 for arguments to that
effect.
