Ciga Bricks

INTRODUCTION

Cigarette butts are a bigger environmental problem than you might realize, with
some 6 trillion cigarettes produced every year, creating 1.2 million tons of garbage. And
due to the chemicals and heavy metals in the filters, that garbage is technically toxic
waste. So what if we could get rid of butt litter by using them to make bricks?

Physico-mechanical properties of terminated clay blocks produced with various

rates of cigarette butts and furthermore of control block tests are accounted for and
discussed. To enhance the properties, three distinctive blending times were tried with
7.5% of cigarette butts fused in clay bricks, particularly at 15 minutes, 10 minutes and 5
minutes separately. The effects of these progressions on physical and mechanical
qualities were assessed. With 15 minutes blending time, the estimation expanded up to
114% and 12% for quality and thickness individually contrasted with 5 minutes blending
time. Then again, values for water assimilation, beginning rate of ingestion and elasticity
diminished by 22%, 29% and 5% separately.

Cigarette butt bricks can be used for building and pavement all through-out the
country. In the Philippines, it was once used as a pavement material, and now it is more
widely used as a decorative surface rather than a roadway material. It is usually laid flat
and are usually bonded forming a structure to increase its stability and strength.

Ciga Brick Inc. will manufacture and produce high quality yet affordable bricks
made of cigarette butts. We offer six-month warranty to ensure costumers peace of mind.
If things don’t work as expected, a warranty may allow the purchase to be returned,
replaced, or repaired. Certain actions, such as misuse, may render a warranty invalid,
preventing you from returning a broken product.

PRODUCTION PROCESS

The manufacturing process of Ciga Brick involves the following stages; (1)
Proportioning (2) Mixing (3) Compacting (4) Curing (5) Drying (6) Heating and (7) Cooling.
Proportioning

Proportioning is the process of determining the certain amount of raw substances

needed to produce good quality product. Cigarette Butts are added to the clay by the total
weight of Bricks in percentage (%). It is important to know the right ratio to have the best
result of the mixture.

Mixing

The mixing process is done to ensure that the Clay-water mixture and cigarette
butt are mixed properly. The raw materials are first crushed and ground. Natural clay
minerals, including kaolin and shale, make up the main body of brick. Small amounts of
manganese, barium, and other additives are blended with the clay to produce different
shades, and barium carbonate is used to improve brick’s chemical resistance to the
elements. Then the ingredients are formed using the extrusion method. The pulverized
ingredients are mixed together with water, passed into a de-airing chamber.

Compacting and Extruding

Since, the product is brick, it is needed to be compacted for better strength and
durability of the product. Excessive and lack of compaction would result in poor quality of
the product. The clay mixed with cigarette butts should be well compacted in the different
molds and extruded. After being extruded, it will go to Cutting and Trimming process.

Curing and Drying

Once the bricks are formed, they are dried to remove excess moisture that might
otherwise cause cracking during the ensuing firing process. The Ciga Brick Is removed
from the mold. After being removed from the mold, it is allowed to dry for two to three
days.

Heating

The heating process is the cooking of cut bricks in kiln that makes the ciga brick
reddish. Once it is heated, the cigarette butt mixed in clay will be burned. After drying, the
brick is loaded onto cars (usually automatically) and fired to be used to convey them
through the tunnel kiln. These cars are pushed through the kiln's continuously maintained
temperature zones at a specific rate that depends on the material. The majority of kilns in
the United States use gas as a fuel source, though a third of the brick currently produced
is fired using solid fuels such as sawdust and coal. Tunnel kilns have changed in design
from high-load, narrow-width kilns to shorter, lower-set wider kilns that can fire more brick.
This type of design has also led to high-velocity, long-flame, and low-temperature flame
burners, which have improved temperature uniformity and lowered fuel consumption.

Setting and Cooling

After the brick is fired and cooled, it is unloaded from the kiln car via the de-hacking
process, which has been automated to the point where almost all manual brick handling
is eliminated.

PRODUCT DESIGN

The product name CigaBrick is based on the company name Ciga Brick Inc. Ciga

Philippines, the collectors will also collect or buy cigarette factory defects. Upon delivery,
the CBs were disinfected at 105 oC for 24 hours and then stored in sealed plastic bags.

Natural clay minerals, including shale and kaolin, make up the main body of brick.
Small amounts of manganese, barium, and other additives are blended with the clay to
produce different shades, and barium carbonate is used to improve brick's chemical
resistance to the elements. Many other additives have been used in brick, including
byproducts from papermaking, ammonium compounds, wetting agents, flocculants
(which cause particles to form loose clusters) and deflocculates (which disperse such
clusters). Some clays require the addition of sand or grog (pre-ground, pre-fired material
such as scrap brick).

WASTES AND WASTE DISPOSAL

 Segregation of garbage will be observed in the proposed project. Biodegradable,

Non-biodegradable, Recyclable and Hazardous will be segregated. Trashcans will
be placed into their designated places
