TITLE : LIGHTNING PROTECTION SYSTEM (AN

Design Intent :
The purpose of this discipline design manual is to provide technical direction for the desi
protection system and for the selection, application and installation for various buildings
described the design methodology and risk analysis of Lightning Protection system.

References:
Calculations are based on IS 2309-1989, Protection of Buildings & allied Structures again

Design Basis for Risk Analysis:

The Lightning protection is designed by means of evaluating the Risk analysis of the build
a) Dimensions of the buildings
b) Risk exposure estimation
c) The lightning flash intensity Ng for the site location
d) Collection area
e) Probable No. of Strikes
f) And the Overall risk Factor

Calculation Section -1:

Step 1: To find the Collection Area in Sq.mt.:

Collection Area = (L×W)+2(L× H)+2(W×H)+(3.1
Where:
L = Length of the Building in Meters
W = Width of the Building in Meters
H = Height of the Building in Meters

Step 2: To find the Probable No. of strikes:

Probable No. of Strikes = Collection Area x Lightning fla
Where:
Ng = Lightning flash Intensity, i.e: Ligh

Step 3: To find the Overall risk Factor:

Overall Risk Factor = Probable No. of Strikes x overall
For Overall weighting factor , kindly refer the Annexure-1

Step 4: Result & Conclusion:

If overall risk factor exceeds 10^ -5 lightning protection is mandatory for the buildi
-2 , else not necessary.

Methodology for lightning protection design:

Step -1:
Measure the dimensions of the buildings Length(L) ,Bredth(B) and Height(H) of the build
protection is required
Step -2:
Calculate the Perimeter of the building
Preimeter P = 2 x ( Length + Bredth) Meters
Step -3:
Horizontal terminations on the roof will be calculated based on 20 x 10 M mesh. Based on
of the conductors will be calculated as
Cross length = (Length / 20 ) - 1
Cross bredth = (bredth / 10 ) - 1
Roof grid conductor = Perimeter + ( cross lenth x bredt
Step -4:
Calculate the No. of down conductors, test link & Earth pits:
For a structure having a base area exceeding 100 meters, the number of dow

1) one plus an additional one for each 300 m2, or a part thereof, in excess of
2) one for each 30 m of perimeter of the structure protected.
3) On structures exceeding 20 m in height, down conductors should be spac
4) The No. of test links and earth pits are equivalent to the total no of Down

Notes:
1. Air terminal will be provided at the tallest point of the building only.
2. All the Earth pits pertaining to Lightning protection will be interlinked with strip condu
CASE STUDY:
BUILDING CONSIDERED FOR DESIGN: ADMINISTRATIVE BUILDING
CALCULATION SECTION -1: RISK ANALYSIS
Step 1: To find the Collection Area in Sq.Meter.
Collection Area = (L×W)+2(L× H)+2(W×H)+(3.1
Length of the building = 30 Meters
Width of the building = 15 Meters
Height of the building = 25 Meters
= (30 x 15) + 2x(30 x 25)+2x(15 x
= 4663 sq.mt
Step 2: To find the Probable No. of strikes
Probable No of Strikes = Collection Area x Lightning flash
Lightning flash Intensity (Ng) = 1.1
Ng = 5.13E-03
Step 3: To find the Overall risk Factor:
Overall Risk Factor = Probable No. of Strikes x overall
Weighting Factors:
Use of Structure - A = 1.3
Type of Construction - B = 1
Contents or consequential = 1.7
effects - C

Degree of isolation - D = 1
Type of country - E = 0.3
Overall Multiplying Factor = 0.663
Overall risk factor = Probable no of strikes x overall m
= (0.00512875 x 0.663)
Overall risk factor = 3.40E-03
Step 4: Result & Conclusion:
THE OVERALL RISK FACTOR EXCEEDS 10^ -5 FROM THE ABOVE CALCULATION, HEN
NECESSARY FOR THE BUILDING AND GO TO CALCULATION SECTION -2

CALCULATION SECTION -2 : LIGHTNING PROTECTION DESIGN:

Step-1: Measure the Dimension of the buildings:
Length L in m = 30 Meters
Bredth B in m = 15 Meters
Height H in m = 25 Meters
Step -2: Perimeter of the building
P = 2 ( L+B)
P = 90
Perimeter P in meters = 90
Step -3: Find out the cross length & bredth of the conductor & roof grid length
Crossing Length CL Nos. = (Length /20 - 1 )
= (30 / 20 )- 1
= 1
Crossing Bredth CB Nos. = (bredth /10 - 1 )
= (15 / 10 )- 1
= 1
Roof grid length = Perimeter + ( cross length x bred
= 90 + ( 1 x 15 + 1 x 30)
Roof Grid Size in meters = 135
Step-4: Find out the no of down conductors , Test link & Earth Pits
No. of Down Conductor = ( Perimeter of the building / 30
= 90 / 30 +1
= 4

Overall Summary:
For Roof Grid Size of 135 meters, 4 nos. of down conductor are required. Hence, test links
earth pits of 4 nos. each are required for the entire system.
