Internship Thousand Islands

My internship took play in the Alexandria Bay School District. My time there was spent

mostly shadowing Michael Augliano, a history teacher at Alexandria Bay, as well as shadowing

a 9th grade Algebra teacher, Mr. Bleam. The idea of this internship came about because of my

interest in the education field, specifically History. I was there from before the start of the day,

roughly 8am to the end of the day, 3pm, over the course of three days. This time frame held 9

periods, as well as a shorter 10th period named “Advisory”.

My first day consisted of getting to the district and signing in, upon signing in I obtained

a visitors pass claiming I was an intern for Mr. Augliano. I then was picked up by Mr. Augliano

and headed to his room. On the way up to his room we talked about my internship and the

education field, he introduced me to all the teachers in the high school wing and then we got

prepared for the first period class of Wednesday, 1st period was US History 11, it was a small to

medium sized class, I got to watch as he taught the class and how things went to start the day.

The following period he brought me to a different teacher so i could observe how other teachers

run their class as well. I was brought to observe a 9th grade Global History class taught by Mr.

Bastian. This opened my eyes to other methods of teaching, for comparison, Mr. Augliano was

more technology based and used power points and google classroom to teach. Mr. Bastian taught

more old school, showing the occasional video, and teaching mostly from the book. I then was

brought back to 3rd period where I watched him teach a SUPA Government class. The same

shadowing followed for the rest of the day, as I got a feel for the school and the classes.
The following day, Thursday, was very similar to the previous day, except for i started to

be more interactive, helping kids with essays they started on government, and walking around

the room helping kids on the homework that was assigned, this continued the following periods,

I also had the honor of walking through the short lesson of what the essay was on, i would walk

them through how the introduction would go, starting by talking about representation in

government and then moving on to the issue of slavery in america, then the students would set up

a chart to help them on their body paragraphs. As of thursday i started to feel a lot more

comfortable in Alexandria Bay and definitely more comfortable teaching and talking to the

students.

The third day, Friday, was the most impactful of all the other days of my internship. The

start of the day in first period was very similar to the previous days, 2nd period was used to

prepare the lessons I would be teaching for that day. I would start by running through my

presentation with the SUPA Government class as kind of a test, then letting them play an

educational game called “Practicing Government”, Mr. Augliano would take this opportunity to

give bonus credit to whoever got the highest score. I then moved onto 4th period where i would

run through my presentation on Congress completely and then play the game with this group as

well, i would walk around the room and help whoever needed the help, like the other class, a

bonus 100% grade was added to whoever got the highest score in the activity. 5th and 6th period

were lunch monitor periods where we just looked over a study hall, 7th period is when I was able

to teach a whole lesson on Washington's Presidency and the formation of political parties

between Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton. I noticed that i did go faster that Mr.

Augliano, but we still got through the notes and made sure everyone understood them well. The

last period with a lesson was a repeat of 4th period, but with more kids and they were definitely a
more talkative bunch, i found it harder getting through the lesson with this group but we still got

through it fine and overall the day went very well.

Overall the internship went very well, Mr. Augliano was a very nice individual, he talked

me through what i would be doing and gave me the option of what i can do and if i wanted to.

Being so thorough with lessons before hand really helped with confidence especially since i was

teaching in front of junior and senior classes. This internship solidified my opinion on the

education field, I feel like I thoroughly enjoys it and as well as it gave me some skills, especially

on presenting fluently.
