In order to get the idea for my National History Day project, I researched the civil rights

movements in South Carolina online and in the local library and found the protest that best

interested me. This protest is the Friendship Nine.

In order for me to complete my research, I looked throughout my local public library to

see what books and/or newspapers they had available, along with looking through the Kimbel

Library. I also looked on google scholar for online articles, documentaries, and interviews. In the

end, I used books, articles, documentaries, and interviews in my National History Day Project.

Through my research, I learned about some of the hardships that some people would go

through after protesting who could not pay the fine. I also learned that some people who were in

the movement were protesting for selfless reasons and for their community.

In order to put my project together, I had to learn a lot more about the software I was

planning to use. During that, however, I learned that the software I wanted to use did not meet

the standards I needed to meet. Because of this, I figured out Windows 10 software and used that

instead of Openshot Video Editor. During the process of the National History Day Project, I

learned how to better use editing software and how to better understand different versions of

similar software. I also learned how to manage my time to make sure I had time to work on my

project every week to get to where I needed to be.

My topic relates to this years theme of Triumph and Tragedy because even though the

Friendship Nine were arrested, they overcame that and started the Jail, No Bail movement. This

is important to history because it was something that they thought was small at the time, but

ended up impacting the Civil Rights Movement drastically more than the group ever thought it

would.
