Final Project Report

Punch Activated Flame Thrower (The sparker)

Supplies:

● 3 Axis Accelerometer
● Arduino Pro Mini
● Arc Lighter
● Jumper cables
● Solenoid valve
● Sauter board (after you have working electronics)

About the Project:

This project is a punch activated flame thrower. The

punch activated flame thrower is exactly what it sounds like; it
is a glove that fits over the user's hand and when there is a
punching motion, the machine shoots flames. The full piece is
composed of a custom built butane canister with a solenoid
valve and a sparking mechanism using an arc lighter and an
accelerometer. When a certain limit is met or exceeded on the
accelerometer, the solenoid valve
opens and proceeds to ignite the arc
lighter which produces a short burst of
fire.

Though we encountered some

problems getting the accelerometer to work correctly, we found
a way around this block by using a calibration sketch to make

sure that we were at least getting readings from the accelerometer that made sense.
However, through this project, we never really got the desired results. Even when
setting up the same circuit and using their code the readings in the IDE didn't make any
sense. Without understanding how to get the accelerometer to work, building up the rest
of the flame throwers was going to be very difficult.

We were able to get the lighter to work using a button and LED hooked up to a
blink sketch so I knew that if I could get the accelerometer to activate the blink sketch
that I could at least get the sparker piece to work. Unfortunately, we were not able to get
this portion of the sketch to work. Though we could not get the sketch to work, we
learned a lot about coding and how sketches work.

Being able to hook up the lighter for us was a very big step because we have
never really stepped into the electronics field of engineering other than smaller previous
projects. By taking apart the arc lighter we were also able to learn a little more about the
inner workings of that even if they were less related to the final outcome. We came into
this class with little understanding of coding and for some reason, it is still super difficult
for us to be able to learn and understand. However, the more practice we get with
projects like this that are more difficult the more we are able to learn.

Throughout this project, we learned a lot about how to code correctly, what not to
do and what to do. It was a very hard project however we did all that we could with the
time given to us. One of the biggest challenges was not having enough time to figure
out the coding problems we were having, however we will be doing our best to figure it
out so we can finish this project.

This is close to what ours would have looked like using the Arduino pro mini, accelerometer and
the arc lighter.
