Calc 1 Final "Project"

Instead of practicing word problems, testing on them, and forgetting, we will be

generating a class resource that has the skills and techniques needed for these integral word
problems. It is likely you will encounter these in a college calc course, and there are a variety of
tricks needed.
First, I will randomly assign you to a group of three and give you one of four types of
problems to solve. The topics are:
- Disc method - Hannah, Nyana, Wyllow
- Shell method - Nate, Charlie, Amanda, Sage
- Arc Length - Grady, Parker, Riley
- Work - Quincy, Ce, Kian, Taylor

Your document should contain the following sections:

1. Introduction. Detail the type of situation that the problem is meant to solve. Give an
indication of how realistic it is, and discuss the scope of problems you could encounter
for it.
2. Method of solution. Include a step by step instructions on how to solve these problems.
Detail what to look for, and how to determine which steps are necessary. Example
problems are useful. In some problems, graphs are as well.
3. Tricky steps. What tricks come up? What should you be looking for that can change the
procedure? Where are the common errors made?
4. Proof. Justify the methods (formal proof not needed). Give a logical explanation for why
this technique works - what it is doing and where the calculus is.

We will build each document and create a place to access it in the future - perhaps my DP is
best, but you all can decide.
