Diploma in Creative Media Production

& Technology
Project proposal template
In producing the project proposal, and in preparing for the project realisation, you should
familiarise yourself with Unit 8 of the qualification.

In particular, you should understand the assessment and grading criteria which will be
used to determine standards of achievement.

Unit 8 requires you to produce a project proposal of about 350 words, excluding the
project action plan and bibliography. Project proposals should not be so succinct that
they do not address the requirements listed below, nor should they be excessively long
and unfocused.

Your project proposal should be sufficiently challenging to ensure you have the best
possible chance of meeting the grading criteria.

Your project proposal should include:

 Centre name and number
 Candidate name and number

 Project proposal title and date
 Main area of activity/ pathway, e.g. film, TV, games design etc.

The project proposal must be word processed and presented under the headings listed
here:

Section 1 - Rationale
(Approximately 100 words)

This section provides you with an opportunity to reflect on, review and summarise your
progress and achievements through the first seven units of the qualification, and the
knowledge, skills and understanding you have acquired; What you know now, and what
it means to you, compared with what you knew and could do before you started the
course and how this has influenced your choice of pathway and your project proposal.

Section 2 – Project concept

(Approximately 200 words)

This section provides an opportunity for you to clearly explain the concept and aims of
your project, the research and ideas that will support its development, what you
anticipate producing, the levels and types of resources that you will need and an
indication of the form in which you will complete and present your project realisation
within the allocated timescale.
Section 3 - Evaluation
(Approximately 50 words)

This section provides an opportunity for you to explain how you will reflect on and
evaluate your work, as both an ongoing activity and at the conclusion of the project.

You should describe how you intend to record your decision-making and how you will
document changes to your ideas as the project progresses. The evaluation section
should reference your stated aims and be reflective and analytical rather than a
description of actions completed.

When working in collaboration with others, you should comment on how this may impact
either positively or adversely and outline the steps you can take to minimise disruption to
your own progress.

Additional requirements, not included in the 350word limit of the

proposal:
Project action plan and timetable:
This section provides you with an opportunity to outline your planning and organisation
over a period of weeks and the activities you will need to carry out in order to
successfully complete your project in the agreed time frame. The more time and thought
you give to planning your project, the more successful it is likely to be.

It is important that you consider how you will balance ambition, time and realism in the
realisation of the project. You should also include what you are going to do, how you will
do it and by when. Remember to include: time spent sourcing materials and other
resources to conduct research, seek feedback from tutors and peers, and identify when
you will carry out independent study.

Bibliography (Harvard Format):

This section provides an opportunity to record the initial research sources, both primary
and secondary, that you intend to use.

Your sources of research should be as wide as possible and could include libraries,
galleries, books, magazines, films, computer games, websites, blogs, social media, radio
programmes, archive material etc. Where appropriate, you should use the Harvard
system of referencing. The bibliography should be continuously updated as the project
progresses.

Unit 8 Project Proposal

Candidate
Name Daniel Gordon
Candidate
Number
Pathway Short Film

Project Title Ghost of war

Section 1: Rationale (approx. 100 words)

Before I started this course I knew very minimum about how cameras actually
worked, I used to shoot all my footage on auto and had no idea how the
exposure triangle worked or what a depth of field was, I believe I have
improved on camera settings and placement over the course of the last 7
units, although I struggle with the blog work I do believe I have improved a lot
since the start of the year, I think the production context heled the most with
the blog work as it helped me understand how to properly conduct research
and how to talk about it on my blog. My favorite project this year has been the
heist trailer as it was everything I enjoy about film making, we got to work
with the actors to create separate personalities for each character and as it
was a trailer it didn’t need too be in chronological order which made the edit
process a lot more fun and creative, one thing I have definitely improved on
the most this year is editing, at the start of the year I could only edit on Sony
Vegas creating small videos for Youtube, now I have quite a good
understanding of final cut and with the help from paddy and taking a lot of
tine to practice outside of college I now have a good understanding of the
basic features of After Effects.
Section 2: Project Concept (approx. 200 words)
For my FMP I wanted to do a short film with a nice plot and a lot of character
in, I was talking to my dad about what I wanted to do and he told me about
this script he wrote about 10 years ago, I sat down and started going through
it, Obviously I couldn’t use his script as it was a 2 hour film so I took the
basic idea and the same characters and I wrote my own short version of it. I
really wanted to challenge myself with this project and not just do something
I know I can already do, if I did that I wouldn’t be as motivated and I wouldn’t
of had any fun. So the first thing I needed to find was locations as my project
has quite a few various locations, the main place was a living room, for this I
built the set in my nanas dining room, we moved all of the chairs and tables
to the corner of the room and I will try my best to not get anything in shot,
originally I also wanted a hospital room but I rang the university up about
hiring a ward for a day and they were unable to do so, this meant I had to
change the script again to work with the new location which I decided was
going to have to be in my nanas house again and the family were now staying
there to look after him rather than in the original idea they were there looking
after the house. Rickerby park was the final location I needed but it was
important to me that I experimented with different shots to see what looked
nice and what didn’t, I had a number of shots that I have tried to make look as
cinematic as possible and to stop the location looking to recognizable.

The ghost in my project is a German soldier from WW1 who dies at the battle
of the some so I have to conduct a hefty amount of research about that battle
and more importantly the uniform the soldier should be wearing
Section 3: Evaluation (approx. 50 words)
I am planning on getting 4 or 5 people to watch my film on seperaate
occasions and ask them to focus on different aspects, one will focus on the
lighting and color correction and someone ese will focus on audio etc.. this
way I will get a clear understanding of how I can improve on everything
separately, I will also get a few people to watch it without focusing on any
thing and getting some overall feedback.
