A Study on the Level of the Satisfactions of the Grade 11 Students in Different Canteens in

GMATHS S.Y 2017-2018

CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION

Nutrition may be considered as the first step towards student’s readiness to learn. It is thus

assumed that healthy and well-nurtured children are more prepared to learn and to attend their

class. They also better to take advantage of educational opportunities. On the contrary, poor

nutrition can have vital negative consequences to children’s school routine in the form of grade

repetition, higher chances of dropping out, and lower achievement in school. According to Roekel

(2013), students improve their attitude, alertness, attendance, academic performance when their

hunger need is satisfied. In the United States of America, “A School Breakfast Program” provides

students free breakfast in public schools.

As cited in a study by Cartagena (2014), Anderson notes that a study conducted in the USA

showed that students may be exposed to a variety of unhealthy foods and drinks which can be

found on the canteen inside the school.

According to Santacruz (2016), A school canteen must be a clean and safe environment.

Children are quite susceptible to food borne illness and you must take the proper steps to always

ensure all foods are safe for consumption. School canteens in most areas of Australia are required

by law to have a Food Safety Supervisor on staff, so you need to make sure you either hire one or

have one of your staff members trained on a nationally recognized course. That means practicing

safe personal hygiene for all staff members, knowing how to properly store foods, how to keep

foods at the proper temperatures, and how to maintain a cleanliness.


Background of the Study

The Department of Education in the Philippines issued Order 17 mandating that only

nutrient-rich and fortified food shall be made available in school canteens. Processed fortified food

should bear the “Sangkap Pinoy” seal. It is the indication that a processed food passed the

requirements of Department of Health to have essential micronutrients that is important in

maintaining strong and healthy body. Among beverages, only milk, vegetable, and fruit shakes

and juices are allowed.

Processed foods normally contain additives, artificial flavorings, and other chemical

ingredients to preserve lifespan and develop taste.

Statement of the Problem

1. What is the level of respondent’s satisfaction to the services of each canteens in GMATHS as
to the following:
1.1 Ambiance;
1.2 Cleanliness;
1.3 Taste of Food;
1.4 Amount of Serving;
1.5 Variety of Food;
1.6 Customer Service;

Objectives of the study

This study aims:

1. to determine which canteen can satisfy each students of Senior High School of GMATHS

2. to classify the different foods in the canteen, and

3. to suggest considerations such as policy on food selections served at the school canteen

and an information for the cleanliness of the canteen from the results of the study
Assumptions

Significance of the Study:

The researchers deem that the study is beneficial and significant to the following:

Grade 11 students. It is beneficial and significant to them because they will be aware of their

own level of satisfactions for each canteens.

Canteens. The understanding of the result will help them become more sanitary and clean also

to help them plan meals and serve food that benefits the students.

Administrators. It is valuable to the GMATHS administrators because they can mandate the

new rule regarding the health of the students.

Scope and Limitations

The study focuses on the satisfaction of the grade 11 junior high school students of GMATHS
for the school year of 2017-2018. The estimated number of the grade 11 senior high school is 1200.
Each student will undergo in a test that will be given by the researchers. The result of the test or
the survey will be used to know if there will be some changes or improvements needed in the
facilities.
The researchers will not focus on the previous environment of the participants. This study will
just focus on the specific learning style for each student. The researchers will not going to interfere
with the personal life of the students outside the school.

Theoretical Paradigm

The researchers use rational decision theory and social disconfirmation theory to support

the study,

According to the rational choice theory, people are inclined to make wise and logical

decisions. According to (Coleman 1973; Heath 1976; Carling 1992) in rational choice theory,

people are seen as interested by the wants that express their preference. They act within specific,
given restraints and on the basis of information that they have about the conditions under which

they are acting. Rational people choose what that give them more satisfaction and pleasure.

Rational choice theory is connected to the satisfaction of individual because sometimes

they probably choose what is available on the canteen not thinking if it is healthy or not. For food

conscious they might choose the nutritious or if there is no available nutritious food they could

choose low carbohydrate foods.

According to the social disconfirmation theory Oliver (1980, 1997) in this theory, the

customer’s perception of overall satisfaction results from a comparison between expectation and

outcome performance. Therefore, expectation and outcome performance are two important

variables which can influence the judgment of satisfaction measure.

Social disconfirmation theory is connected to the satisfaction of each students because

customers’ satisfaction is one of the reason why students tendency purchase something based on

their own satisfaction.

Conceptual Framework

The figure or the diagram shows the process of the study. The researchers use an IPO

model which shows input, process and the output of the whole study. In the study, the input refers

to the test administered to the grade 11 senior high school students will be used in the study. The

participation of the students is very important to the whole study. The process refers to the test that

the students will take. The students need to answer the rest through the help of the researchers.

Lastly, the output refers to the preferred level of satisfaction about the canteens distinguished by

the result of their will be identified
