Combustion Control System IMES CCM Customer Reference
• Combustion Sensors on Thomas Shulte Ship Management GmbH
Using the two-stroke combustion sensors type TCS—1CA and combustion control
module CCM Marine aboard container ship Hedda Shulte resulted in significant savings
in engine maintenance, repair, fuel cost and reduction of CO2 emissions by 2%,
according to Georgi Hristov, a superintendent at Thomas Schulte Ship Management
GmbH.

On Hedda Schulte, the sensors were mounted in adaptors between the cylinder cover
and indicator cock in July 2015. As these adaptors have no sharp edges, only a small
volume of combustion deposit remains inside and therefore the measured data is not
affected and is very accurate.

After 5,000 hours of continuous operation the sensors were sent back to IMES’ pressure
calibration unit for inspection in 2016. The result was a span error of maxi-mum 0.2%.

In June 2017 the two-stroke combustion sensors and the combustion monitoring system
were checked. Two sen-sors were sent back to the factory for inspection at the pressure
calibration unit. The result was a span error of maximum 0.5% after 7,000 hours of
continuous operation.

“The IMES CCM Marine records all cylinders simultaneously and displays them on the
PC. Important data such as Pmax , Pcomp and Ipower can be stored on the PC for an ex-
tended period of time”, said Mr. Hristov. “In the future we plan to adjust the engine also
from land by transmitting the acquired data directly from ship to office. Therefore, CCM
Marine is an optimal device to balance all cylinders regarding Pmax, Pcomp and IMEP.
This provides a basis on which to run the engine as efficiently as possible.

Instrumentation and Control System for Diesel Power Plant Reference
• Retrofit of Kaloum III (ex Tombo III) power plant in Conakry, Guinea.
Built in 1997 by Sulzer, the power plant has been out of service for many years but
under plans to bring it back on line, we replaced four of its original engine cabinets
with new ones.

The new cabinets integrated also acquisition and control of auxiliary systems.

New instrumentation provide improved exhaust gas pyrometry and bearings

thermometry alongside a TB3 system for the connecting rod bearings.

A general supervision system for all power plant equipment was designed in order
to provide an improved and modern control room. This enabled the project
investors to follow the production of the plant from their office in Washington DC
or anywhere in the world thanks to a dedicated and secure link to the Kaloum site.

CMR was previously a partner of Sulzer and Pielstick, manufacturing its

instrumentation and control monitoring technology, as well as an integrator of
ABB solutions for governor speed regulation

• Generator NDE Bearing Temp - Increase
DESCRIPTION: Between XXXX and XXXX, the
Generator NDE Bearing Temp has increased
from about 178 F to about 182 F. The DE
bearing temp, lube oil supply temp, and NDE
bearing oil drain temp did not show any
similar increase.

DIAGNOSIS: Although the increase in this

case is slight, it may be an early indication of
problems on the generator NDE bearing
similar to those we’ve already seen on Unit 1
and Unit 2. Continue to monitor closely.
Consider inspecting the bearing at the next
opportunity.

• Turbine Lube Oil
DESCRIPTION: The turbine lube oil temperature on Unit XXXXX has, on several occasions, dropped from about
145 degF to about 100 degF. Based on the call last week, the temperature control valve had just been replaced
because the old one had been sticking.

DIAGNOSIS: It appears that the new thermostatic valve is experiencing similar issues as the old one due to cold
weather. Recommend checking the new valve. This issue may be addressed by the redesign plans currently in
review.

• High NOx and Ammonia Flow
DESCRIPTION: On XXXX, the ammonia flow
transmitter increased to 24 pph. On XXXX, it
increased to 29 pph. During that time, NOx
ppmvdc (Low) increased from 3.6 ppm to 16.5
ppm, and Stack Outlet NOx from SCS
increased from 3.7 ppm to 24.6 ppm.

DIAGNOSIS: This may indicate a possible

NOx control issue at that time. We have
talked about combustion mapping on this
unit in the past; check any possible related
OEM activities onsite.

• Command and control system for emergency generators
Project:
Supply of command and control system for emergency generators for a radar installation in France. The customer
was the Direction Générale de l ’Aviation Civile (the French Directorate for Civil Aviation) and was for the power plant
for the West Flight Navigation En-Route Centre located in Brest.
CMR’s project management services included an initial study, system design, cabinet design and construction,
factory and on-site testing before final installation commissioning and monitoring. It also covered the delivery and
commissioning of load test benches. The project saw strict compliance with specifications laid down by the DTI,
French Technology and Innovation Department, part of the DGAC – CMR’s direct client.

It was also a challenging one, providing an opportunity for CMR to gain experience in the
design of complete control and monitoring systems for strategic installations along with the
manufacturing of cabinets and administrative management.
CMR was able to offer significant improvements not provided for in the original agreement
such as the integration of DEIF electronics and elimination of relay systems, adding value for
the customer.
