LO 2 : Install operating system and drivers for peripheral devices.
Information Sheet 1.2-1
Structure of Operating Systems

Learning Objectives:
After reading this INFORMATION SHEET, YOU MUST be able to:
1.describe structures of some operating systems.
2. give examples of some other operating systems.

Introduction :
Structure of an operating system.
Internal structure of operating systems can differ. Structures of operating systems tend to differ depending on
the arrangement of files, how hardware and applications are installed and controlled and how the user
interacts with the system. When it comes to Macintosh, Windows, Linux, and other operating systems, their
performance depends on it structure, as different operating systems were built with different concepts and
uses in mind.
MS DOS has the simplest structure. It was written with the aim of providing more functionality in less space. It
is not separated into modules. Though MS-DOS does have some structure, the interface of MS-DOS and the
levels of functionality are not clearly separated. MS-DOS follows a layered approach. MS-DOS operating
systems are divided into a number of layers; build one on top of the other. The bottom layer, layer 0, contains
hardware and the highest layer is known as the user interface. Layers are chosen with modularity so that each
utilizes services and operations of only the immediate lower-level.

UNIX operating systems has limited structuring. It has two separate parts as System programs & The Kernel.
The UNIX operating system consists of everything below the system interface and above the physical layer
(hardware). It provides a large number of functions for one level like file system, CPU scheduling, memory
management and other operating system functions.
The modern operating systems implement kernel modules. This is structured using object-oriented
approaches. Each core component is separate and talks to each other over known interfaces. Each core
component is loadable as and when needed within the kernel. Overall it is similar to the layered architecture
but with more flexibility.
Virtual machines are structured by taking the layered approach to the most logical conclusion. Virtual
machines treat hardware's and the kernel of the operating system as though all are hardware. Virtual machines
provide interfaces matching the underlying hardware. Operating systems generates the vision of multiple
processes, all executing on its very own processor with its very own virtual memory. It is structured in a
manner that the resources of the physical computer are shared to make the virtual machine. CPU scheduling
creates the idea that users have their own processor. A normal user time -sharing terminal serves as the
virtual machine operator's console.

These are some basic structures of operating systems. One can identify ways in which they are alike and differ
according to the purpose it was built to serve. The architectures differ with technological advances, outdating
techniques frequently.

Creating a Bootable Device

LEARNING CONTENT:
 Structure of operating systems.
 System’s specifications.
 Creating a bootable device.
Installing an operating system and drivers.

Learning Objectives:
After reading this INFORMATION SHEET, YOU MUST be able to:
1. Convert a flash drive into a bootable flash drive.

Introduction :
How to create a bootable Windows USB using Rufus
A few years ago, creating a bootable USB drive used to be a somewhat daunting exercise for many
people as it meant using the command prompt to access DiskPart which is a great little command-line
utility. Luckily for us, there are now far simpler ways of achieving this, by using free software like
Rufus to do the hard work instead. Please note though that Rufus is a Windows only utility.

In this tutorial we will be creating a bootable Windows 7 Ultimate x64 USB.

Things you will need:

 Your bootable ISO of choice. I will be using a Windows 7 Ultimate x64 ISO (If you have a
Windows 7 disk, then you can create your own bootable ISO easily using ImgBurn)
 Latest version of Rufus (I am using version 2.2)
 A spare USB stick (The size of the USB required will vary depending on the size of the ISO you
are using. For this exercise I need an 8GB USB)

Once you have the required items, you can start by opening up Rufus. Don’t worry about any of the
settings here as Rufus will automatically do this for you depending on the type of ISO you are using.

By default, it will appear to have many of the options blank until you connect your USB. Once you
connect the USB, these fields will be automatically filled for you.

Next, connect your USB to your computer.

Now we need to select our ISO. (in my case the Windows 7 ISO) Select the icon highlighted as
shown below, which will let you browse for the required ISO file.

Note, if you are using a USB stick that is too small, like using a 4GB USB for an ISO that is larger
than 4GB you will get the following error:

If your USB is the correct size then you will get a standard warning telling you that any data/partitions
that was on the USB before starting the process will be permanently deleted

Click OK, to start.

How long the process will take to complete will depend on the specs of your computer, the USB
(read/write speeds) and the size of the ISO you are using.

 Installing an operating system and drivers.

Learning Objectives:
After reading this INFORMATION SHEET, YOU MUST be able to:
1. Enter bios set up utility.
2. Configure a bootable device into a first boot device.
3. Save configuration changes.

All About Boot Priority

To boot from a CD, DVD or USB device, make sure that the device has boot sequence priority over
the hard drive.

BIOS Boot

BIOS (Basic Input Output Subsystem) is a programmable chip that controls how information is
passed to various devices in the computer system. A typical method to access the BIOS settings
screen is to press ESC, F1, F2, F8 or F10 during the boot sequence.

BIOS settings allow you to run a boot sequence from a floppy drive, a hard drive, a CD-ROM drive or
an external device. You may configure the order that your computer searches these physical devices
for the boot sequence.

The first device in the order list has the first boot priority. For example, to boot from a CD-ROM drive
instead of a hard drive, place the CD-ROM drive ahead of the hard drive in priority.

Before you set boot priority for a USB device, plug the device into a USB port.

Windows itself, without any programs, takes about 21GB...

...but if we intend to install large programs, such as games with 50GB+ installations, we should
allocate between 100GB (102400MB) and 250GB (256000MB), so we don't run out of space. The
System Reserved partition is created automatically.

By clicking the rest of the unallocated space, we can create a data partition for our files.

Install Windows 7 on a disk that already has a Windows partition

If we had a previous Windows installation on the disk, it will show as one or more Windows partitions.
Usually, the first one or two partitions - if there is a System Reserved Partition - belong to the
previous installation.

Before we make any changes to the previous partitions, we need to make sure we have backed up
any data on the partitions. Deleting or formatting the partitions will destroy all the files inside.

If there is data we haven't backed up, but don't have access to the previous Windows installation, we
can follow this guide: Windows Won't Load? Two Ways to Rescue our Files.

With our data safe, it's best to delete the previous Windows Partitions. We just need to click on Drive
options (advanced)...

No drives are found

If we get a message that "no drives are found", it can mean three things:

 Windows doesn't have drivers for the particular motherboard's SATA controller
 The hard drive isn't correctly connected to the motherboard or the power supply
 The hard drive doesn't work

The most common scenario is that Windows needs external SATA drivers to recognize the hard
drive. This will usually happen with laptops, rather than with desktop PCs.

We will find those drivers on the manufacturer's website for the laptop or the motherboard, usually as
SATA or SATA AHCI.

Installing Drivers

How to Install Drivers by Camilla Mo

As you know, a driver is software that a device uses to work with your PC. When your device isn’t
working properly, you can check if the driver is installed correctly. Faulty driver could always be the
cause. To fix the problem, you need to update the driver. For some devices, Windows can update the
driver automatically. For some devices especially external devices, you need to install the updated
drivers yourself, then you need to download the driver manually.

Download the driver manually

To download new drivers, go to PC manufacturer’s website or device manufacturer’s website. Driver

updates are often available in the Support section of their website. If you are using a
branded computer, it is recommended that you go to the PC manufacturer’s website to check for the
latest driver first, as they may customize the driver. You are required to use the PC model and
the operating system that you are using to download the correct driver. Usually, the PC model can be
found on the machine.. If you need to download the driver from device manufacturer, then you are
required to know the device model.

How to install the driver

The downloaded driver file will be an executable file (File name ends in “.exe”.) or a zip file (File name
ends in “.zip”.).

For executable file, to install the driver, you just need to double-click on the file and follow the on-
screen instructions.

For zip file, you need to unzip it and find the executable file in the archive. If you cannot find an
executable file, you need to install the driver step by step using the “.inf” file. Following steps are for
your reference how to install the driver in this way.

1. Go to Device Manager.
2. Find the device that need to install a driver. (Here let’s take video card for example.)
3. Right-click on the device and select Update Driver Software…
