BAND’S NAME YOU WANT TO FIND OR THE GUITAR PLAYER’S NAME OR SONG
Amps generally have a three band eq, meaning bass, mid and treble. They sometimes have a fourth band,
presence, which control frequencies above the treble range.
When you're eq’ing, start with all controls at noon, or 5. This is a point of no boost or cutting of the frequencies. Play
it a bit and get used to the sound and see what needs to be added or taken away. It is best to do this listening (and
this applies to listening in all further stages of this guide) in a band setting, because your sound changes drastically
when you have other instruments. This is because you have to find your 'place'. Listen to 'Sweet Child of Mine' by
Guns n Roses - when Slash comes in by himself at the start it sounds trebly and horrible, but then when the band
comes in it fits the mix perfectly and has people all over the world trying to get this tone.
So anyway, you've got an idea now of what your amp sounds like, time to make some adjustments. Cut treble if
there's too much, or cut bass if it's too boomy (don't be scared to cut heaps of bass, honestly, guitar requires pretty
much no bass, even when you're playing rhythm - listen to some Van Halen to see what I mean. Ever wondered why
the bridge pickup was so popular for rock?
This would probably be a good time to add in some 'mids'. The midrange is a frequency range roughly between 500
and 1000 hz. Remember when I talked before about finding your spot in the mix? This is the knob that does it. The
guys who makes amps and speakers know this, and usually speakers are voiced with a mid 'hump' - that is, a boost
in the midrange frequencies. This is how you not only get yourself heard without having to turn up too much, but
without drowning out the other instruments too. Mess with this knob while you're jamming with your band to find the
right balance between 'cutting through' and sounding too boxy or honky, or like an old transistor radio.
So there you have it, that should have you well on your way to getting a good tone. Use the below settings as a
guide to get particular sounds, but remember that your gear is different and thus, they should be used more as a
rough guide that a hard and fast way to get that particular tone.
Well folks, it appears to be that time again. What time is that? Time for a new settings thread of course! We are
going to keep the rules the same, and they are pretty simple. Basically:
I agree, to some extent. If you're an experienced player who knows how to EQ and find his/her own tone, then yes,
this thread is useless, but it can save some time to find a tone from a song you may need help with finding that
sound of the original idea.
But imagine yourself as a beginner. You just got your Squire and your Microcube, and you like Black Sabbath. You
don't hear much of a difference when you change the knobs on your amp, so you go onto UG (probably via Google),
and you see the setting for Tony Iommi. You turn your amp on and turn the knobs to the right numbers, and play the
intro riff to Ironman. It sounds perfect, exactly like the CD.
So you play with it like that for a couple of days, and then you start thinking that it doesn't sound quite right. So you
turn the knobs again until it sounds better, and then repeat this cycle.
That is a beginner learning how to EQ. I could have said this in far fewer words, but this thread is a starting point for
many a beginner's path to their own sound
Now, if you have a request that is not covered in the first few posts, feel free to ask. If a setting is given to the
request, feel free to PM myself of another GG&A mod to add it to the list. This way we can keep the settings in one
easy to find place. If you just have a setting you would like to be added to the list, also feel free to PM it to one of us.
REMINDER:
Not all amps are created equal, so keep this in mind when using these settings. Don’t look at them as a definite
answer; look at them as a place to start. Some amps may have more mids inherent to the amp, so you may have to
adjust accordingly. Same for other settings, make sure you adjust as it suits your amp. So now we can have some
fun with settings and help one another out!

Bass-1 or 2, his tone is really toppy.

Treble-7
He doesn't use any effects. He only has one knob on his guitar, and it’s the volume on his bridge pickup. He
doesn't use a neck pickup, so just use the bridge pickup and keep the volume at around 2 or 3 - the real
power comes from the volume of the amp.
The main rule with his tone is low gain, high master. It might take some playing around though, it's a really
crisp tone, and he uses real heavy strings too.

He gave an interview which can be found on the net that asks him what his settings where around 1977:
JP: Depending on the acoustics of the place, the volume is up to about three, and the rest is pretty standard.
Bear in mind that his Marshall 1959SLPs were modded to go to 200 watts using KT66s
There's no proof his Marshalls were ever modded with a master volume during Zeppelin. The TMB settings
are wrong. His Marshalls were modded with KT88s not KT66s, listen to the audio for the interview. He
technically says "KL88s or whatever they call them", but it's fairly clear he meant KT88s. Keep in mind he
says this in May 1977, his tone with Marshalls in 1977 is different than years pass.

That should get you close to the sound produced by Hetfield and Hammett. I personally love all these tones and I
got my sound by combining these settings into the perfect tone

Other Info: A strat is usually pretty crucial to getting this tone. A good set of pickups will help too. Any early 60's

Tour/Systematic Chaos.
Lead Channel:
Lead Gain: 8 (pulled fat)
Bass: 4
Mid: 5
Treble: 6.5
Drive: 10 - I cut it back to about 8.5 and pull it to give it a fatter tone with more guts which gives you a better
simulation of petruccis tone as he uses 2 Mark IV's, and I'm just giving the settings for one of them.

I also hit on a great one for Land of Confusion by Genesis. I usedChannel One on my Crate, which is very similar
to a Silverface Fender Super Reverb in tonal qualities, so keep this in mind when EQing it on what you've got:
Land of Confusion by Genesis:
Gain: 0-1
Mid Boost: ON
Treble: 10
Mid: 6 (w/ Mid Boost), 7.5 (w/o Mid Boost)
Bass boost: ON
Bass: 7 (w/ Boost) 8.5 (w/o)
Reverb: 6 (Keep in mind this is 6 on a Super Reverb-like amp)
Presence: 10
Notes: Run a cranked up compressor with these settings to help tighten up and smooth out the sound. Also to
make it get that crisp bite, use an OD with the tone control around 6 (on a TS9) and the drive on about 2.

Those are the settings he uses live in stadiums. So be careful about the volume, as I can imagine it's loud.
FOR FUN
I just made this, but try it out if you have the pedals. It requires a Boss Harmonist HR-2 (used simply for dual
output) Overdrive OD-3 (or something like it) and a Fuzz FZ-5.
Amp settings:
Channel - Clean
Treble - 8-10
Mid - 8-9
Bass- 7-8
Reverb: your choice.
Overdrive pedal:
Volume: 11 o'clock
Drive: Maximum
Tone: Maximum
Harmonist settings: What you will. It's not really important. Again, it's only used because it has a stereo output.
Input the guitar to the HR-2. Then hook up one of the other pedals Output A and the other still Output B.
Make sure to have the OD in Amp Input 1 and the FZ in Amp Input 2. Typically on most amplifiers, the first input is
louder, and that compensates for the OD's lowered volume.
AMP INPUT 1 <----------- OD-3 <------------|
HR-2 <-------- GUITAR
AMP INPUT 2 <----------- FZ-5 <------------|
I'm really not sure how to describe the sound you get. You have a warmer overdrive with a suppressed fuzz blow-
out behind it. It's very difficult to explain without first hearing it. All I know is that I'm using it for the rest of forever.
Slaytanic1993, after looking at your profile, what are the chances of a setting for Jerry Cantrell's Degradation Trip
album and an Opeth tone?
Specifically for the Watershed and Ghost Reveries albums, but any settings are welcome.
Jerry Cantrell's
JC: Gain - 7, Mids - 5, Bass - 6, Treble - 6
Opeth: Watershed = Gain - 6, Mids - 7, Treble - 6, Bass - 3 1/2. For GR, just back off the treble and mids.

I found a pretty good Josh Homme-esque tone. I have a "different" amp (I'm referring to my Gorilla, not the
Peavey), so you may have to configure differently. Also, I was playing my full-hollow Ibanez Artcore.
Amp:
Volume:10
Master Volume: To taste/need
Gain (Tube Stack for me) : just a hair before 7
Sounded great to me, I know there are like two or three different Queens of the Stone Age/Josh Homme settings
up here, I even copied them down (I've got like 4 pages of settings form this whole thread, took me like an hour).
Also, anyone looking for a good rockabilly/clean tone, I've got one right here:
Guitar volumes: 7-8
Neck Tone: 5-6
Bridge Tone: 10
Amp:
Volume: 7-10
Master: Not crazy loud, I go 2-3 on my 150w Gorilla combo
Gain/Tube Stacl: 0 (If you need some clip, never go above 2)
Hi Boost: On
Treble: 10
Mid Boost: Off
Middle: a tiny bit past 5
Bass: 8
Reverb: 3
Also, make sure that if you have a delay pedal to set it to blend at about 10-11 o'clock, delay time at about the
same (or to whatever you're playing, triplet feel like in "Sleepwalk" or 16th note like in "Welcome to the Jungle",
whatever). The feedback should not exceed 2 or 3 "slaps", but it's more fitting for one slap, as it isn't "slapsback".
I found an awesome Brian Setzer tone, straight from the man himself in an interview in Guitar Player in
1993:
Gain: 0
Volume: 4-5
Treble: 8
Middle: Not stated, but anywhere from 0 to 5 is good, I use it at like 3 or 4
Bass: 1/2
Reverb: I use it at about 3
Slapback delay: just a single echoing note (slap) just after the first, set it to the Rock This Town 0-4-5-6-7-
6-5-4 progression on the D string.

It depens on what kind of tone you want, i use it on max mostly of the time i just change it for specific songs, like
blues, some hardcore and metal. So it depends on you i really dont know how it works perfectly but sometimes it
helps getting the tone like the setting i made for the devil wears prada, i use the guitar knobs only for "dogs can
grow beards all over" but in other song i dont use them ( i use them on max). I hope it helped somehow and
please someone who knows how they work perfectly TALK.

Okay, as far as that or in the bass section, that's because I have seen some debate. I know the gain, treble, and
mids are right. But I've seen two seperate sources and one says the bass is at 40% and the other says it's at 80%.
My theory is that he runs one of his diezels with the 40% and the other diezel has it at 80%. Basically, to try to
emulate his sound, you're gonna have to crank the mids, back off the treble a little, gain around half way
(depending on the type of amp you are using), and you'll just have to fiddle with the bass. I usually do the bass at
80%, but sometimes the 40% sounds alright. You just need to mess around with it all.

these settings are good for a Parisienne Walkways/The Loner tone...

Eh you don't have to take the volume into consideration. Doesn't effect the tone as long as everything
else is good.
LAMB OF GOD
Morello's setup from RATM days is as follows (this is 200% correct)
Marshall JCM 800 Modell 2205 50-Watt Head & Peavy 4x12 cabinet
Digitech WH-1 Wammy
Boss DD-2 Digital Delay
Dunlop Crybaby Wah
Ibanez DFL-10 Flanger
DOD FX40B Graphic Equalizer - everything is flat, only gain is higher.
He uses this when he needs to go louder
In his current setup he swaped Ibanez flanger with MXR Phase 90 and there is Boss TR-2 Tremolo
Gain - 7
Treble - 10
Mid - 4
Bass - 4
Reverb – 0
coheed and cambria is progressive..but they do it as i found out from him telling vox his amp settings (brilliant
channel with full everything). so with a peavey id say between that and these four:
gain 7-8
bass 7-8
mid 4
high 10
pressence about 8
1-4 reverb.
the same but mid about 2 and the first one but gain full and the second or even first with 8 treble..
Clean
Bass- 8
Treble-10
Mid-0
Some Reverb
Avenged Sevenfold
Low - 7
Mid - 6
High - 8
Drive - 10 (on a Boss DS-1)
Reverb - 2 or 3
I only have a small laney amp with mid, drive , treble and bass. I want to get a Unholy confessions like sound. Any
advice?
This will give you an awsome JP like crunch tone. The trick is to get the master above 2.5. Below that the amp still
sounds ok, but it's a bit fizzy and muddy.
ISF: 5.5
Treble: 6
Middle: 5
Bass: 3.5
sharpshoot3r07 a7x would be (as ive said before)
gain 6.5-8 (Depending on your amp. zacky uses 10 or just the neck pickup)
bass 7
mid 3-4 (three is the official i believe..not sure though)
treble 9-10 (9 is the official setting)
reverb 0 (or depending on the song 3 or 4)
presence 8 (if you have it)
syn uses bridge pickup until the solos usually..usually when hes doing sweep picking, it makes a "cleaner" sound
zacky uses bridge pickup on different settings or if you're lazy you can use your neck pickup the entire time.
@diceksox1809 i usually use
gain 6.5 (or for heavier songs like welcome home 10)
mid 3 or 7, depending on the song (most of the time im using 4)
bass 7-8 (most of this dpends on your amp and the choice of mid)
treble 10
reverb 3-4
@Hidden Hippo ive posted an a7x tone above. although for zacky you switch the treble with the bass and maybe
put bass at 8 or 10. or just use the neck pickup the whole time. but most of a7x solos syn uses neck pickups. if this
doesnt help id probably say play around with the bass mostly. but it should work it's pretty much their official tone.
the tone ive posted is pretty much perfect for me and make sure you're playing unholy confessions right because it
usually helps to know it right because the intro is fairly confusing.
if any of you notice coheed and a7x's tones are similar as with the settings, it really depends on your amp and the
songs. THEY ARE NOT 100% THE SAME! and if they do not work for either bands you can always try and fiddle
around with these as if these were just basic gerenal direction and example. i have my amp saved to:
gain 6.5
bass 7
mid 4
treble 10
reverb 3-4
as its very similar in a lot of music i play (Rise against, a7x, coheed and cambria,) although the only "exact
settings" are the ones ive described in the a7x and the one i use (which is actually rise against's exact tone unless
you have their actual amp then it would be full treble, 6-6.5 gain, 0 bass, 9 mid and the rest ive already said) as for
the other things i have said its generally based on my ear for tones while ive been playing and fiddling around. its
not 100% perfect but its just a generalization, simplified. etc.
as for pedals i only really have a distortion and a tuning pedal, but i generally only use the distortion pedal as a
gain boost and its not the greatest, especially with my amp. but i usually just turn the distortion at 7 o clock (0),
tone at 1-2 o clock (6-7) and level at about 11 o clock (4)..if your amp does not have any type of built in distortion i
would have to say use that as a basic idea for distortion pedal and have the distortion set between 6.5-10
i hope this helps you a little bit in finding the tones for both bands
GRUNGE
overdrive: put like 9 or 10
Bass: put like 4-5
Mid: put like 3-4
Treble: 7
you don't really need to add more bass because you have a lower pickup which you can switch to for a "chunkier"
sound

My main setting for dream theater type stuff and other heavy stuff. scooped the high frequenties a bit to
compansate for the harsh nature of the green striped mark III. Works well at bedroom level but the mark II realy
shines when you put the master on 2.5+(which is ****ing load). Clean isn't that great

Main setting for my punk band. pretty much the same setting as my other, but backed down on the volume, treble
and a tiny bit on the gain to tighten things up. Awsome tight and crunchy sound and a clean that's pretty usefull.
master at 2.5+ recommenden, but works well at bedroom levels.

fun setting for the metallica tones on the master of puppets album(stole these setting from a website). Sounds
awsome, but putting the master on 5 is just batshit insane. setting doesn't work well at bedroom levels
Hero settings (Fortress album):
PtH uses a variety of amps so these settings are completely a "ballpark" thing. Also, these settings are dependant
on your rig (Amp and Guitar) as well. Use them as a guideline.
Boosted mids are a must for a PtH sound.

Gain 6
Treble 10 (may be a bit high, I like the sound though)
Mid 5
Bass 6
And my effect knob has no numbers but it's in between the R and the U in CHORUS. Not very helpful, I know, but
I can tell it has SOME chorus effect.
I always play every song on neck pickup but bridge would probably be closer.
MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE
Try amp voicing 13 or 14 with bass in the middle, mids a little over halfway and treble up a lot. Unless you have a
very bright guitar in which case put the treble around the same place as the mids.
MCR use very even EQs and with average distortion on their amps and distortion pedals and fuzz pedals in front
of the amps. So really what you need is a fuzz pedal to add on top. If you don't want to get a fuzz pedal then using
one of the higher gain voices should be okay to make-do. But like I said a lot of it depends on the guitar too, MCR
use weird guitars. Lots of dark-sounding bodies but with bright-sounding pickups and vice-versa.
This is more of an effect identification question than a settings question, does anyone recognise what effects are
being used on this solo?

Obviously there's some reverb and delay but I don't know what else is going on there. To me it sounds like it could
be a little bit of flange, a little chorus, a bit of phaser, a rotery effect - I can't really tell the difference, I know it must
be something along those lines but I don't know what exactly.

THRASH TONES
I have the JCA20 Head and a Bad Monkey, actually!
Try something like this:
Jet City : Gain: 5 /Bass : 4.5/ Mids: 6/ Treble 4.5/ Volume & Pres.: to Taste
BM : Level: Cranked. / Low & High : noon / Gain: Low, if any.
That should give you a good starting point.
ZAPPA COMMENTS
zappa used a TON of gear throughout his career. he also used very obscure gear and setups.
i would be pretty hard pressed to give any 'generic' settings for his gear. i saw in your thread (that got shut down)
you were specifically looking for settings for inca roads and hot rats era.
if you are trying to capture the solo for inca roads, i have heard him use a envelope follower (which is a type of low
pass filter that is sensitive to your playing dynamics), this gives that bubbly vocal tone, give it a bit of gain with a
mids bump for this tone. i have also heard him use chorus/flange style effects on the solos, use a clean tone and
roll off on the high end just a bit so the tone isn't too harsh.
for hot rats, i believe he was using marshalls right around this time (this would be a marshall JMP. mind you, the
EQ shelves for these marshalls is pretty bass heavy, so roll off a bit of low end and maybe bump the mids.
whenever i do zappa tunes, i pretty much just do what i want. i really don't worry about copying his tone, and my
variations end up sounding pretty good. for example, this is a cover of black napkins i did
http://profile.ultimate-guitar.com/...sic/play1129670
i used a '69 twin, an amp he never used*. i used a telecaster styled guitar, a guitar he never used*. and on the 2nd
solo i used a univibe effect, an effect he never used* i think the version actually came out pretty good.
also, i do versions of the muffin man. i use a quite a bit of dirt on my versions, while he tended to use a cleaner
tone than you'd think.
Bottomline: you don't need to worry about copying his tone too much to do covers of his music.
* - to the best of my knowledge, he did not use this kinda gear.
