Reflection Essay

The assignment that I am most proud of is my hot socratic score form the discussion on

All the Pretty Horses. I am proud of my performance in this assignment because I had really

enjoyed the start of the novel and I was able to share some of my ideas about the purpose and

meaning of the author with my classmates. I am also proud that throughout my four years in

English at Great Oak, I have been able to improve my discussion scores consistently. In

freshman year, my discussion scores were some of my lowest grades, and by senior year, they

have been some of my highest. I am very proud that I have been able to challenge myself and

progress to being able to share my own insights about a book I enjoyed with the class.

One aspect in which I have grown over the last four years has been in the category of

language. Although it is not my highest grade, I have continued to improve my scores in this

category each year. My presentation and discussion scores have also improved greatly. My

practices and work habits have also improved, as I have improved my time management and

organizational skills throughout my time at Great Oak. My writing skills, in both literary features

and knowledge have improved over the last four years, although they can still improve.

I feel that there is opportunity for growth in nearly all grade categories. I have never been

extremely high scoring in English, but I believe I have skills that I can build upon in each

category. I would like to improve my literary analysis skills and continue to work on my language

skills as I continue into college. I plan on doing this by continuing to read fiction in my free time

to improve my literary knowledge and my vocabulary. I will need to also maintain my

presentation skills, as I plan on writing essays and interviewing for graduate school within the

next four years.

My next step is to attend Point Loma Nazarene University in the fall of 2019. I feel that

Great Oak, and especially the IB program, have prepared me greatly for my next four years. I

have felt both challenged and supported throughout high school by the rigor of the curriculum

and the care of the staff. High school has provided me with a safe place to set ambitious goals

for myself, and also the necessary skills to achieve these goals. I feel prepared for the next four

years of my education with improved time management, organizational, and study skills. Most

importantly, I feel prepared for college as I have become a more conscientious student because

of the supportive culture of both the teachers and students at Great Oak.
