Water Supply Construction Work

Methodology

SCOPE
The work covered by this activity consists of furnishing all plants, labour,
equipment, appliances and materials and of performing all operation in
connection with water supply lines to cater the need of water of DHA 1-
B Gujranwala. This work method statement covers the requirements for
all water supply lines and distribution boxes construction activities. This
work method statement is to be adopted during the construction of
water supply and distribution boxes at DHA 1-B Gujranwala. This work
method statement describes the controlling elements during the
execution of works. Water Supply work will be having the approval of
Consultant.

All codes standards, manners, testing sampling will be followed as per

drawings and specifications.
The various steps involved in the laying and testing of Water supply.

1. Setting out water supply Line

2. Excavation of Trenches
3. Bedding, Crushed Stones and P.C.C
4. Construction of distribution boxes
5. Laying and jointing of pipes
6. Testing of pipes
7. Backfilling of trenches
8. Retest after backfilling

1. Setting out Water supply Line:

According to the cross sections and approved drawings of the water supply line,
the positions of distribution boxes will be located on the ground according to
approved drawings.

2. Excavation of Trenches:
The work of excavation will be carried out in the form of open cut trenches by
setting the level. The excavation will be carried out according to the approved
drawings and specifications.

Specifications:

Length: According to the approved drawings and Specifications.

Width: 3 feet

Depth: 3 feet or according to the Consultant, on the basis of ground data and
approved drawings.
The width of the trench to be excavated is chosen on the basis of two
considerations:

(i) To facilitate laying and joining of pipe lengths

(ii) To permit thorough ramming of the backfill material around the pipe.

3. Bedding and crushed stones for Distribution boxes:

 After Excavation work, Soil will be dressed up according to the specifications.

 6” Crushed Stones will be placed in the trench at all locations of distribution

boxes, according to the specification.

4. Construction of Distribution boxes:

 P.C.C
 Masonry Work
 Plaster of Distribution boxes

 According to the specifications and approved drawings P.C.C will be laid

over the crushed stones for the construction of distribution boxes. Ratio
of P.C.C will be 1:4:8, as per specification.

 Construction of distribution boxes will be carried out with brick masonry

laid in 1:3 cement sand mortar, built on P.C.C (1:4:8) according to the
specification and approved design.

 After the masonry work distribution boxes will be plastered according to

the approved specification.
5. Laying and Jointing of Pipe Sewers:

Before laying the pipe sewer it will be ensured that the trench has been excavated
up to the level of the bottom.

Pipes shall be laid with the bell facing in the direction of laying. The full length of
each section of pipe shall rest solidly upon the pipe bed, with recesses excavated
to accommodate the bell coupling and joints.

Pipes Specifications:

Polyethylene pipes (PE-100) of class PN-10 will be used in water supply system, of
approved manufacturer for cold water.

Sizes:

3” (90 mm)

4” (125mm)

6” (180mm)

8” (250mm)

12” (315mm)

Jointing:

Connection between different types of pipe accessories shall be made with

transition fittings, recommended by the pipe manufacturer.

All joints shall be in accordance with the recommendations of the consultant.

6. Testing of Pipe Sewers:

Leakage test will be performed for the Water pipes. It will be ensured that concrete
backing blocks have been provided where necessary. Leakage test shall be
performed by keeping the end of the pipeline closed by proper plugs blocked to
resist 150 percent of the actual working pressure.

7. Backfilling of Trenches:

Backfilling of the sewer trench is an important consideration in laying of sewers.

However, the trench should be backfilled only after the laid sewer has been tested
and approved for water tightness of joints.

8. Retesting after Backfill

Entire length shall be subjected to the leakage test after backfilling of trenches, untill pipeline
passes the leakage test.
